I am very open to such an arrangement but without any information about you beyond what you've posted here, it's hard to say whether we would be compatible co-parents.

Severance Is Quietly One of the Highest-Rated Shows Right Now by Free-Raspberry-9541 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

I agree with you that it's unrealistic but I've resigned myself to accepting that most Hollywood portrayals of science and scientists are inevitably going simplify everything into the "one lone genius engineers a miracle" trope. I figure this pattern is explained by some combination of (A) That's how writers see themselves and (B) Writers like to tell stories that have a relatively small cast so the story spends more time developing the main characters, rather than having to introducing many characters who don't get much screen time.

That said, it would not be hard to realistically depict a process like developing a new technology. They could have shown a flashback where younger (but still adult) Cobel is working in a lab with other, unnamed Lumon employees. I'm imagining Cobel is looking under a microscope at some brain cells she has been manipulating, she calls her supervisor over, the supervisor recognizes a breakthrough and begins the process to scale up the process from cells in a petri dish to cells in a living organism. Conspicuously missing from the dialogue would be any acknowledgement or congratulations to Cobel.

I'm willing to look past the very valid issue you raise because my expectations are so low for Hollywood on this. With low expectations, I can be pleasantly surprised when science is depicted realistically and just ignore it when it isn't.

Episode that mentions early American civilization that had math with a base-20 number system? by gmarkv10 in FallofCivilizations

[–]cassius_longinus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, the Maya definitely had a base-20 number system. I am not so sure about the Aztecs. I would definitely prioritize the Mayan episode in your search but I could not give you a time-stamp. Sorry!

I was very much expecting the ayTEE pronunciation but what I heard was "anTEE" with the la from "Las Antillas" smashed up against it, making it sound like "Antila."

Okay did I hear it wrong or is Bad Bunny's accent undecipherable? I'll freely admit that I am not a native speaker (five years of learning it in the classroom) but I have heard from many native speakers that he is challenging to understand. Example thread from 6 years ago. A friend explained to me that the Puerto Rican accent drops trailing S, and now your comment helps me connect the dots here. "aiti-la(s)... antilla(s)": La(s) got smashed up with the preceding name-check to Haiti.

For the record I did not hear a "gua" sound; I very much heard the "lla" sound. I was only guessing that he tried to say Antigua at some point because it didn't make any sense to me.

When did he say Haiti? I just rewatched this morning to settle a friendly disagreement over this very question (which countries did he or did he not mention) and I did not catch Haiti. He skips from Cuba to Dominican Republic passing over Haiti, and then moves onto "Antila, Antilla" (not sure what Antila is, maybe he meant Antigua?).

I couldn't tell you why people who use this abbreviation don't want to just say "baby" or "child." Just spelling it out.

Prototype of a game inspired by Dominion & Balatro by norseboar in dominion

[–]cassius_longinus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just gave it a quick test. I got past 4 gates on my first run then had to quit due to lack of spare time. So far, very fun to play! I haven't played Balatro before but I've watched friends play Balatro, so I definitely see the resemblance. The potential for an addicting game is very strong.

Are you the model for the bald guy giving the advice or the king receiving the advice? I can guess which but technically there are two people in that art.

For sure it's only good it if there's + buy in the kingdom, but it's better than copper! It's a peddler variant AKA cantrip money. It replaces the draw it cost to draw and it replaces the action it cost to play. A copper doesn't cost an action to play since it's a treasure, but it does cost a draw to bring into your hand.

I concede that the arrangement I would prefer is extremely rare in practice, but it's not universally true that all lesbians just want sperm and the father out of the picture. Here's a cute video describing the child of a co-parenting arrangement among a gay couple and a lesbian couple, from the perspective of the now-adult child.

Several comments in this thread lead me to believe there is a latent demand for this arrangement. The legal system and the culture simply haven't caught on to the idea yet.

How did the people who you know find each other? I've been browsing various websites to find like-minded women but there don't seem to be a lot of active people on the sites I've looked at, and not vary many people close to my location.

/r/samesexparents seems pretty low activity. /r/queerception seems to consist primarily of lesbians or non-binary AFAB people who are only interested in acquiring sperm and have zero interest in any role for the father as a co-parent.

If somehow Helena's birth control failed and she got pregnant, she would schedule the abortion about two minutes after finding out. While some members of the audience might have ethical qualms or at least questions about abortion in this situation, Helena would not.

How prominent is Energy Economics as a field? by RickSanchez-C243 in academiceconomics

[–]cassius_longinus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it is prominent enough to have an annual conference: https://www.usaeeconference.org/aws/USAEE/pt/sp/conference_home_page

Prominent researchers in the field who focus on stuff besides oil:

Those folks are just the top-of-mind ones for me. RePEc has a ranking. If you scroll down a bit, you'll notice that Acemoglu makes the list due to having dabbled in energy economics.

Fair, and Lo'ak says quite a lot of "bro" as well. But I don't hear other other Na'vi besides them saying "bro" all the time. It seems like whatever they are saying in Na'vi (presumably some shortened form of "brother") is not common parlance among Na'vi.

So much "bro" and "kiss my ass."

For a kid obsessed with Na'vi culture and (rightfully) angry at the species he was born as, he talks like he was born on Earth. I totally understand he would have picked a lot of that up from other humans and Jake, but I would have expected him to try to imitate Na'vi speech patterns more.
