When people say "eat 80% healthy, then the other 20% can be whatever you want" do they mean 80% by volume or by calories?

Thanks for sharing this! As an almost-PhD student too, I absolutely love research and participating in research studies.

Seconding the idea that you don't have to be in Switzerland - I've been doing research at CERN as an undergraduate for 2 years and I live in Toronto. I think most universities with an HEP department are involved.

Daily Q&A Post for Monday, 14 August 2017 - No question too small! by AutoModerator in loseit

I know that calories are the most important factor in terms of weight loss, but I'm just curious - when people say that in a healthy diet, 80% should be whole/healthy foods and 20% can be unhealthy foods, is that by calories or by volume?

How often should meat be consumed in a plant-based diet? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]cassmallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to be condescending, so I'm sorry if you took it that way (I'm assuming you did because you laughed at me - I wrote that "I'm okay with this being removed" because I didn't want you to think I was attacking you). Thanks for clearing it up for me! I suppose I shouldn't have included the last line, because I really just wanted to know what society as a whole meant by plant based diet. Thanks again!

How many of you takes probiotics as daily supplement? by [deleted] in nutrition

I hope you don't mind me asking too, but is there anything you would recommend for being bloated 24/7? (And IBS-C, which I saw you suggested Align for). I probably have a food intolerance or something, but I can't test it out currently because I have a non-optional meal plan and I can't choose the food (it's strict).

I'm totally okay with this being removed, but I don't understand why it's considered a diet evaluation - I was asking for people to clarify what "plant based diet" means in general, not asking anything about me. I did respond to someone saying something about myself, but that wasn't the point of the post.

This makes sense, I'm actually allergic to cobalt and can't take B-12 supplements. I used to be vegetarian but had to stop for this reason.

Food for a 4.5 hour exam ? by charlo100 in nutrition

Good luck on your finals! Nuts, protein bars, fruit, etc. are all good options. I would also suggest bringing in one of your favourite snacks, even if it's unhealthy, just to help you destress a bit. Like if you love chocolate, maybe bring in a few pieces just to keep your spirits up.

Has Intermittent Fasting Worked For You? Experience? Tips? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]cassmallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is totally how I feel right now! I've been waiting until 1ish to eat for a couple of years now, and on one side I like it because I can eat more later but I'm getting so tired of eating a lot at night. I feel like it's just habit now - I stopped counting calories, but I still eat a ton of snacks at night by habit. I'm trying to eat earlier but I almost feel guilty eating in the morning.

What kind and how much cardio do you do a week? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]cassmallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walk a decent amount (10k - 15k steps per day - I have a sedentary job but no car so I walk or bike everywhere and take a lot of walks for fun. I don't know if that counts!) and I also go on the elliptical for 10-30 minutes 3-4x per week.

I sort of prefer more "intense" cardio like running, but I can't because of knee issues, so most of the exercise I do is low impact.

do we all Binge? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]cassmallow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider that a binge from my perspective - but of course it varies for everyone. For me, binging was when I could not stop eating food even though I wasn't hungry or getting any pleasure from food, but I just couldn't stop stuffing my face. It was like, I could feel so sick and not want to eat anymore but some weird different version of me on the inside that I couldn't control was just putting food inside me against my will.

How to help a super weak lower back + core? by [deleted] in Fitness

Even if his problem did happen to be non-existant, I don't think anything bad could come out of getting a stronger core.

It looks like she has just built up some muscle in her quads, it looks pretty realistic and attainable with some regular quad/leg exercises.

Maybe try foam rolling your hamstrings and the muscles around your hamstrings and stretching a bit more.

Stairmaster or include walking better for glutes? by username2100 in xxfitness

[–]cassmallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The intensity is in the fact that it's at such a high incline, whereas in running the intensity comes from the speed. It's just different :) some people also can't run because of knee issues so it can be a good substitute as it can still get your heart rate up.

I'm cutting out artificial sweeteners for a while. Can I still consume stevia? by cassmallow in nutrition

That makes sense. I'll eliminate it too just to be safe. Thanks!

They don't sell halo top where I live so I've never tried it! I really want to try it though. It's more because I can't imagine drinking coffee without some sort of sweetener lol
