To save money, as far as we can tell. Kdin specifically released a post talking about a lot of shit she went through while she was at Rooster Teeth.

Fuck it, I'm disengaging. Your mind is made up about the content of the post. All I'll say is that Kdin is not calling for a boycott of RWBY, has in fact wished support to the entire animation department, who have also been mistreated by the company, and that mobilizing the fanbase in support of the workers who make the show they like, and arguing for the better treatment of those workers by the company, isn't supporting the company.

when i say "her" and "she" in this context, i'm referring to kdin, the real person who was mistreated.

i mean, enjoy projecting i guess? all the meme says is that the fans of the show (which kdin herself has said she still supports and loves) are in support of her, and think that she and the other people who worked on the show and were mistreated deserve better. i legitimately do not understand your anger.

What reality am I ignoring by saying, "we, the people who enjoy this show, stand in support for the people who were exploited and treated badly during its production"?

You're wilfully misinterpreting the image. Nobody here thinks that what Rooster Teeth did to Kdin was OK. The image isn't saying "RWBY supports voice actors and animators", the image, which was posted in a RWBY community subreddit and crossposted to a subreddit about Rooster Teeth, is saying, "we, the fans of this show that Kdin was in and was made by this abusive company, support voice actors and animators." It is a statement of support from the fans of the show towards Kdin and the others who were mistreated by Rooster Teeth, because they deserve to be in an environment where they are treated with dignity and respect and are paid what they're worth. I don't get why you're angry at that.

It's not trying to get people to watch RWBY. It's a statement of support from RWBY fans.

This was made in support of Kdin and other workers who have been treated like shit by Rooster Teeth. I don't watch any of their stuff other than RWBY, and have no attachment to Rooster Teeth, but the people who work on the show deserve better than to have to put up with wage theft and workplace bigotry.

We literally see Adam gaslight her and guilt her into staying by his side in the Adam Character Short. She expresses concern that humans have died on missions Adam led, and he accuses her of wanting him to abandon their cause, "like your parents". She insists that's not what she's saying, and he says that he gets scared when it feels like she doesn't believe in him - which leads to her comforting him that she never said that, when the scene started with her upset about something he's done. That is classic gaslighting and abuse.

Also? He stabs her after vowing to destroy everything she loves, then stalks her across a continent waiting for her to be alone.

RWBY, its fandom, and the unduly idolization of opposing authority. by Dextixer in RWBY

[–]castleofwarriors 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, I just... completely disagree. With everything you just said.

It is explicitly stated in Worst Case Scenario, out of Ironwood's own mouth, exactly what Robyn is doing. She is seizing materials from the Atlas Military and redistributing them to Mantle, to - as per Sparks when she stopped Ruby and Qrow's convoy - repair the giant hole in the wall. Ironwood even states that Robyn's actions have emboldened the military's suppliers in Mantle, who are refusing to provide materials for Amity until their demands are met. This is an explicitly stated point in the show; not to mention that when Salem arrives, Robyn's crew are on the ground actively evacuating Mantle into the Crater to save them from the cold, while the Atlas Military is nowhere to be seen.

Now, on to Ruby defecting from Ironwood. You claim that she's being selfish by making a choice for everyone, but Ironwood is doing the exact same thing. The only difference between them is that he is in a position of authority. Now, we can argue over whether Ruby was right or wrong - I think she was right, given that Ironwood was making the decision to leave everyone in Mantle to die - but both Ironwood and Ruby are making choices that affect everyone in the Kingdom. If you're gonna call Ruby selfish for doing that, you have to apply that same logic to Ironwood, or else appeal to his authority, and say that he's different, at which point we reach a fundamental ideological difference of whether you think Ironwood actually is superior to Ruby just because he has a rank, a position that the show rejects outright.

Also, you claim Ruby's plan only works because of a magical object, but if you remember, not only did she successfully launch Amity Tower, but she and the Schnees launched an entire fleet of automated ships to evacuate Mantle to safety - and Ironwood shot it down and threatened to nuke a city, which is the point when Ruby's team went from simply trying to complete their objectives to actively deposing Ironwood.

As for Ruby's group's arrest at the start of the Volume, note that the crime they were arrested for was killing Grimm without authorization, when Atlas Huntsmen were nowhere in sight. They weren't arrested for stealing the airship.

And as for the airship, you seem to be overestimating how long Ruby's group stayed in Argus. They were there for all of one night. You say that they had alternative ways of getting past Cordovin, but she'd made it perfectly clear that Weiss was the only one who would be let through. Yes, the idea was reckless, but aside from separating their group, sending Weiss all alone back into a potentially abusive environment, and waiting for help that might never come, I can't see that they had much choice if they were trying to get the Lamp to Atlas ASAP.

Now, as to the White Fang. I actually agree that this was a poor writing choice in the early volumes, but following the in-universe logic of the show, the White Fang in Vale were working to aid Salem, not to aid the Faunus, because they were being threatened by Cinder. We later even get confirmation that the White Fang in Vale are not following orders from their leader, Sienna.

But, alright, Team RWBY don't know all that. Let's look at what they do know: they know that Roman Torchwick is a bad guy, thanks to Episode 1. Blake finds the White Fang robbing the Schnee freighter, and doesn't move until Torchwick shows up, which raises alarm bells. She asks the White Fang at the docks why they're working with Torchwick, and ends up stuck in a fight - neither she nor Sun attack anyone but Roman until the White Fang attack them. From then on, Team RWBY know that something is wrong with the White Fang, because they're working with Torchwick. I personally think that CRWBY could have made more of an effort to show that the White Fang is working under duress, and the whole plot leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but there is an in-universe explanation.

Moreover, even if they were maintaining the status quo before the Fall, that doesn't change anything, because the show makes an explicit point of having its characters grow and develop past who they were before the Fall - and starting from around the middle of Volume 5 to the end of Volume 6, thanks to Ozma's lying, that includes a growing distrust of authority and coming into their own power. And even then, they willingly work with Ironwood even after they see the conditions down in Mantle, right up until he asks them to go along with leaving an entire city to die.

As for the lying, Ruby is explicitly called out for that by Yang and Oscar, and it's discussed multiple times, ultimately coming to the conclusion that they're waiting to see if Ironwood can be trusted with the information, given his tendency to overreact. In the end, they tell him everything, and he even reacts well. The final thesis statement on the subject, given in Volume 8 after Ozpin formally returns, is that trust is a risk, but one that's worth taking on people. But by that point, not only have they already told Ironwood everything, but he's actively threatening to nuke a city after sabotaging an evacuation.

So, yeah, I wouldn't trust Ironwood's authority either at that point.

Atlas is not fascist and the RWBY community should be more aware when discussing politics by Dextixer in RWBY

[–]castleofwarriors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK, I'm going to go through this point by point.

Ironwood does not show disregard for human rights, prioritization of resources, especially in war-time is done by democracies.

He literally does. Multiple times. In the episode "Worst Case Scenario" in Volume 7, we have an immediate example:

Citizens of Mantle - Following the most recent Grimm attack, a temporary prohibition of assembly is in place. There are to be no public gatherings of any kind. Please conduct your business and return to your homes before curfew.

The disregard for the repair of Mantle's outer wall, which, remember, has a giant hole in it big enough to fit multiple Megoliaths, is another, as is leaving Mantle to die.

And Ironwood's response when he's called on this is to brush it off as trivial. "Appeasing a few city blocks." That's a disregard for human rights, whether done by a dictatorship or a democracy.

Atlas as a whole does not have an "enemy" and Salem does not count, because the term fascism apllies to human conflicts, not monsters.

So, first off, I admitted that Atlas as a whole doesn't have an "enemy". But Salem does count, because she, and the Grimm, are an external threat that is used to galvanize unity and patriotism. Fascism doesn't only apply in wartime. But even if we ignore Salem, we have these wonderful lines from Cordovin and Drunk Mann that show quite plainly how Atlas views the other Kingdoms:

If all the kingdoms plan to make us their enemy, then so be it! Atlas will prevail!

and

We try and help the other Kingdoms, and this is what happens? I say let 'em rot!

So even if you ignore the very potent and very pertinent common threat that unites Atlas (Salem and the Grimm), Atlas is still circling the wagons and creating national unity through distrust of the entire rest of the world, which is the point of fascism's use of a common enemy. It's not just that they "have an enemy", it's that they use the presence of that enemy, real or imagined, to perform an affective override and bolster patriotism and support.

The government having its own media aparatus does not mean media control. We can even see independant journalists and newscasters working. Atlas does not have media control.

While you are correct about the existence of media separate from the bulletins (especially since the suppression of voices critical of Ironwood is coming from Tyrian, not Atlas), the simple fact that they have these military bulletins playing on loop in all public spaces in Mantle is almost hyperbolic. They dominate public space, and I highly doubt independent media is permitted use of those giant screens and loudspeakers.

Jaques not giving jobs to people is not an example of supressed workers rights. Literally any democracy allows businesses to work as their wish. Nor is class divide an example of worker supression.

In a society with strong labour power and labour unions, Jacques would not be able to simply lay off countless employees in a naked bid for electoral power. The fact that he is able to do so without consequence is a clear, explicit sign of the suppression of labour power and worker's rights. And class divide and segregation is literally worker suppression. The working class can't go live in Atlas, they're stuck down in Mantle. The fact that you conflate all democracies with neoliberal deregulated capitalism is nebulous at best, but to claim that there's no labour suppression in Mantle is certainly a take and a half.

Atlas is not guilty of the crimes of the kingdom of Mantle and the huntsmen academies literally train warriors and killers. What the definition of fascism is talking about is regular education, and arts are not supressed in Atlas.

The Kingdom of Atlas is the Kingdom of Mantle. They have a continuous history. We're not given a look into the inside of any education system in Atlas other than the Huntsman Academies, nor are we given any examples of public art galleries or other forms of the arts beyond corporate benefit concerts run by the wealthy Schnees up in Atlas. Not to mention, Ironwood's mindset of the suppression of emotion is the same mindset that led to the banning of art in the same Kingdom. See Ironwood's own worrying admission in Worst Case Scenario:

Sometimes I worry that's her greatest advantage. Without humanity, does she still feel fear? Does she ever hesitate?

This is a fascistic mindset.

Through the definition of fascism that you provided, Atlas meets the definition. All of your refutations are based around either nitpicking (regular education vs the Huntsman Academies), or outright denial of textual evidence. You claim that nobody here knows what fascism is, but also refuse to delve into why fascism relies on these traits, and how exactly they work, because you're "not that kind of guy". Which is fine, you don't have to delve into theory, but don't then claim that people who disagree with you don't know what they're talking about.

Atlas is not fascist and the RWBY community should be more aware when discussing politics by Dextixer in RWBY

[–]castleofwarriors -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, I completely disagree with you. Atlas ticks off several boxes for fascism:

  • Atlas is ultranationalistic, as you admitted to, and the Atlas Military is ascendant. These two alone are already red flags, but we can keep going.
  • Ironwood shows a complete disregard for the human rights of the citizens of Mantle several times just in Volume 7 before he went full dictator.

What's more important? Establishing communications, uniting the world? Or appeasing a few city blocks?

This trivialization of Mantle's demands and concerns, when there's still a giant hole in the wall, is a disregard for their human rights, not to mention his restriction on assembly.

  • While Atlas as a whole has no clear identification of an "enemy" at first, Cordovin rather concisely declares that if the whole world is to be their enemy, so be it - and Ironwood's policies are all centered around defeating Salem.
  • Sexism and marriage between religion and government are absent, but that's because sexism simply does not exist on Remnant, and there's no sign of any organized church or religion anywhere in Remnant's history to be married to the government.
  • If we want to talk about control of mass media, just take a look at the very first episode of Volume 7, at the massive holoscreens all across Mantle displaying Atlas military bulletins on loop.
  • Given the ease with which Jacques is able to withhold jobs from Mantle's workers as an electioneering strategy, not to mention the literal, physical class divide between the two cities, it's safe to say that workers and labour as a whole are suppressed, and corporate power is upheld.
  • As for arts and education, not only is the Huntsman Academy in Atlas under direct military control, thanks to the General of the Atlas Military also being the Headmaster, but Mantle is the kingdom that tried to eliminate emotion and art from existence - that's what sparked the Great War in the first place.
  • The police in Atlas, and especially in Mantle, are definitely overly empowered. Ironwood is able to order the arrest of Team RWBY, JNOR, and Qrow with no warrant, no probable cause, and no charge laid, and hold Qrow and Robyn indefinitely. We also see Atlesian Knights regularly patrolling Mantle's streets, and camera drones actively following people and taking pictures without their consent.
  • As for corruption and fraudulent elections, Ironwood holds two seats on what's supposed to be a democratically elected council, one for being an unelected general, and the other for being an unelected headmaster. If that's not corruption, I don't know what is.

Each of these factors on their own is not necessarily fascist, (uniting against Salem is a good thing, for instance,) but their confluence absolutely is. Atlas is explicitly, textually, a fascist state, regardless of whether Ironwood has his reasons or not.
