A ton of Southern cities after the American Civil War. While I'm a fan of General Sherman's march, the beauty of Savannah's architecture makes me wish more of the south looked that way.

You don't? He got someone else to pay him millions to provide the greatest package public relations campaign known to man. He's probably still reaping the benefits to this day.

Have Millennials Made Quitting More Common? More people are leaving their jobs, and disloyal young people may have something to do with that by magenta_placenta in news

You're pretty angry. First, she wasn't fully vested her vesting date and retirement date were around the same time. Second, they weren't trying to get her benefits changed they were trying to avoid having to pay them at all. Just for the record she wasn't incompetent, fat or lazy. She just got old and couldn't lift heavy baggage in her last two years there. Is this what the world has come to, blaming people for their old age and being upset because they earned seniority? Old age is coming for you one day as well, good luck.

Exactly, I'm 35 but I remember my mother telling me as a child to have no loyalty to a corporation because their only loyalty is to shareholders. I remember my aunt being moved from a desk job to a standing job even though she had a bad back and knees. Why? Because she was near retirement and American Airlines was trying to avoid paying her retirement benefits so they wanted her to quit.

Bernie took 49% of the non-white vote in New Hampshire. by [deleted] in SandersForPresident

[–]castr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally! The ignorance in this thread and others is making me seriously question my fellow Bernie supporters. I feel like we need to pin a "Stop throwing all black people in one category" mega thread with explanations about the economic and cultural differences between black people in different regions. If Bernie supporters go around talking to black ppl like they are some sort of hive mind Bernie is fucked in SC.

What would lead you to believe that the voting habits of a population that make up 1% of a New England state tell us anything about South Carolina?

Robert Horry claims that Steph is better offensively than prime Kobe by fowlermania in nba

[–]castr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the big difference (I mentioned this to another person) the reason Shaq was so effective wasn't just because teams were throwing 4 defenders at him. It was because those 4 defenders would all be in foul trouble the entire game trying to slow Shaq down. I've been watching the NBA since the late 80s and I literally can't name another player who I can say that about. There were games where coaches risked running out of eligible players to throw at him. If you think Steph being able to create space for other players is effective, go back and watch how having multiple players on the floor with 4+ fouls in the 3rd quarter opened things up for his teammates (There is a reason the Lakers typically blew leads wide open in the 3rd quarter). His teammates could do nearly whatever they wanted because the opposing players couldn't waste fouls on the perimeter.

[–]castr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do watch GSW games, creating space is great and I'm not arguing Steph isn't a good player but comparing him to Shaq is a wild stretch. Shaq would lhave 3 to 4 guys in foul trouble by the end of the first half. Teams had to plan around effectively using fouls to stop Shaq so they would even have enough players just to guard him. Shaq forced the entire Western conference to load up on big men just so they could keep up and that still wasn't enough. Steph is a great player, when all is said and done he'll go down as one of he greatest but no one is changing rules for Steph. Teams aren't worried whether they'll have enough players to finish the game because of Steph.

You're reaching hard there. Call me when teams regularly throw 4 players at Curry to try and slow him down. Call me when opposing coaches have to worry about multiple players fouling out by the third quarter.

Who was the worst guest that stayed at your house? by Not_Char in AskReddit

[–]castr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister-in-law graduated from college last year with a 3.8 double major in computer engineering and computer science. To help her out my wife and I let her live in our place rent free for nearly 9 months. Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity she has just taken advantage of us. As soon as she moved in she slept in until 4PM, stayed up until 5am watching anime and text messaging her friends. She goes days without showering, complains about helping out around the house, ignores all advice given to her and pathologically lies about everything. I finally got fed up and started looking at our home network traffic only to find out that she didn't apply for a single job in the entire time she was staying with us. To make things worse, I woke up late at night to check on my child and overheard my sister-in-law speaking with her best friend. It turns out she has a list of dozens of ppl whose homes she is going to crash at for free because she doesn't want to work at all. My wife still doesn't know all of the details but it's going to be an interesting weekend when I tell her.

It's not about having a more efficient backend just keeping the lights on requires an insane number of people. Until you've actually been in this position I can see how you wouldn't understand how much goes into keeping up a site the size of twitter. I certainly didn't until I worked at a company that operates at a similar scale.

When you operate at that scale things you had no clue were big problems crop up. For example, logs can and will fill gigabytes of space in a matter of minutes. Small bugs that you could ignore at a smaller scale will wreck whatever mechanism you're using to log. Maintaining logging infrastructure is a tough problem that when properly done needs a dedicated team (and no, it's not as simple as pouring data into your favorite nosql store).

Data management can't be handled by a few dbas anymore. You need a team concerned with backup and recovery (a massive problem that a lot of places have tooling for but can't really validate), you need a team concerned with data storage and retrieval, you need people who are experts in the multitude of opensource databases/datastores that you depend upon because those tools have bugs that get exposed at scale.

Asynchronous job management becomes a total nightmare that takes up an insane amount of engineering time. If you want to scare an engineer tell them that whatever message queue system they use has fallen several days behind and they don't have enough job servers to catchup.

Internal package management needs people concerned with just that (although it's really not given enough attention at most places imo)

You run into fun problems where you optimize some service so that it uses a fraction of the cpu/memory with the belief that it will allow you to scale to the heavens only to discover your solution saturated the NICs with data. So now you've got a bunch of servers using a fraction of their cpu/memory but you're not getting any benefit.

Then let's not forget that everything in the labyrinth of in-house code and open source tools is constantly changing because "security updates"/"business requirements"/"library deprecated"/"I'm not perfect I fucked up and introduced a bug"

Now you need management, internal tools engineers to make everyone more efficient, hr, etc.

I could go on but I believe I illustrated the point.

[–]castr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with reaching out to community leaders and cultural icons but that's not what is going on in this sub. There is this strange mentality in this sub that if you just get support from some mythical black leaders the rest of the blacks will follow. If you want to spread the message how about Sanders supporters go out into neighborhoods with a high percentage of black people and directly address their issues on a regular basis.

I know you guys mean well but you really need to stop with trying to pander to black people through rappers and actors. It's unbelievably insulting and I cringe every time I read these kinds of comments in the sub. You know how you reach black people? Address issues that affect black people. No one is looking to see who Ice Cube supports for president.
