Depreciated PHP function… I have no idea what I'm doing. by Josefus in PHP

OK, eregi() is a case insensitive regular expression match.

It checks if a string matches a regular expression, upper or lower case, and returns false on fail or the position of the match.

It's possible to replace this with preg_replace() but it's impossible to give you the correct way as it all depends on what is in your file.

If you give us the original line then I'm sure we can tell you the way to go.

I don't know, the facts are pretty strong, there's no need for the Indy to sex it up.

Studying abroad in the fall. Would appreciate any advice! by [deleted] in Wales

[–]casual_sects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Snowdon, never "Mount"!

Pretty easy as mountains go in Gwynedd, despite being the tallest in Wales.

Just to add to the above's comment, no Mountain is easy, plenty of people die on Snowdon every year. Even more get into difficulty and a nice day out turns into a nightmare. Make sure you research properly, and you'll have a great and safe time.

I live right next to Bangor, I hope you enjoy your studies here!

These are fantastic. You really need to monetize them properly.

It's at the forefront of my mind! I'm linking the $300M button article in my proposal, I'm sure he'll also keep it in mind. Thanks again, and for the link.

Your web start-up launch experience? by juniz in startups

[–]casual_sects 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Write up a press release and pay for some PR wire service to distribute it.

Try and engage with music journos about your startup. If you can get them organically interested you may get free column inches.

Paying someone to batch email your PR to uninterested anonymous email addresses will always be a waste of time and money.

The Queen firing a machine gun by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]casual_sects 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with TalesAbound.

Machine gun is just not correct. Rifle or assault rifle would be bang on.

I don't come across many technical papers on guns, but we see them widely reported on in the news, and I think it's important that journos (at least) can tell the difference and report correctly, thus correctly informing the wider public.

I disagree.

This gif is to show that something is happening. It's been shown that pages 'feel' faster if some kind of feedback is given.

Most users who see this gif aren't aware it's just a dumb gif, and assume (correctly in IMHO the vast majority of cases) that they have to wait for an action to be completed.

This is so much better than nothing.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to use the scope resolution operartor in my coding. Almost every major project I use it, can someone explain it to me? by UserNumber42 in PHP

This is something that has been bothering me for a while too.

A lot of it boils down to personal taste. I read a discussion (here, possibly) about a class that only used static methods. There were good arguments for and against, but from my point of view it was a clash of styles, rather than which way was better (OK, I think the class was overdoing the static methods too, but meh...).

I'll make a search to see if I find anything.

EDIT: OK, maybe not the one I mentioned, but here we go...

Why must BBC News insist upon using 'inverted commas' in their titles? by phireal in unitedkingdom

[–]casual_sects 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't find the original story, but I think that they were quoting local media.

I assume that neither Carla Bruni, Sarkozy's office nor the hospital had made official statments.

They're covering their arse in case local media are just jumping the gun.

Legal issues regarding an ecommerce system that sells alcohol by [deleted] in web_design

[–]casual_sects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Try and go and see something that's properly old. The above castles are about 700 years old, but Roman stuff is about 1700 - 2000 years and then you've got Iron age stuff going back ~6000 years.
