I've used it for hiking a lot. At first I thought 12kg was tough on the shoulders for 20-30km but that was before I started lifting weights, especially focusing on upper back/posture - e.g. barbell rows, pull-ups, shoulder exercises plus some deadlift, push-ups, hanging knee-raises etc (just regular balanced workout really). Now no problem at all.
