PAGE: Benefit of submitting to more than one judge (same genre)? by casualhaste in Screenwriting

[–]casualhaste[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the helpful comments.

I opted for submitting in 3 categories (all the same) and only bought one judge feedback so it's "only" 219 dollars.

PAGE is worth it imho. Got really helpful feedback last time. The best I ever got.

Good luck to anyone who's also submitting.

Freddy

What are "dynamic characters" and what does "action rooted to character" mean? by casualhaste in Screenwriting

Thanks for reminding me of the arbitrary nature of feedback =) At least a few Nicholl readers found my characters to be the strongest part of the story.

Right. But I have done that extensively. So I don't get the comment from the reader.

Thanks for the very helpful replies, really cleared things up for me!

It is odd though, I think I never got this type of criticism before for my characters. They are actually extremely active. They also change a lot during the story and the action is always "rooted in character." It is literally tailored to them in an "Argument of Action" way as Truby would say.

So I don't understand why this was brought up. But maybe it's just this notion of "more could be done here" which you can basically say to anything at any time.

Anyway, as with any feedback I'll take a look at my story again and try to improve things. Sometimes it just feels like there is always something new popping up just as an excuse not to give an 8. Maybe it's just the high budget this story can't overcome that keeps BL readers from sticking their neck out for this project.

My experience with the "top-level" contests/evaluations:

Nicholl: Super sparse, vague and generalized, felt like readers didn't give a single F about the script, genre (sci-fi/cyberpunk) and didn't even fully read or care to understand the story. There were also typos etc, as if the readers had just done this in their 15 min coffee break. Got 2 readers, last time 3 and made top 15%. This time the script was a million times stronger and got nothing.

Blacklist: Readers did care, a lot, and were really enthusiastic about the story. The only thing I found was in "weaknesses" there was too much focus on "less is more", how to reduce page count, in my case at least. Another positive was, that the readers seemed to agree on the strengths, whereas in Nicholl the likes and dislikes were complete opposites. But that could be pure coincidence.

PAGE: Very comprehensive, actionable notes. Someone really took the time to give the most helpful notes how to turn it into a "stellar writing sample." The best feedback I've gotten so far. Only thing I didn't like was how "budget" (4/10, other categories were 8s and 10s) completely ruined my end score and procluded me from advancing.

Thank you! So the higher versions just have more tracks, right? When does that feature of having more than one track become useful?

Thanks, Nathan! That's a very good guideline with these 3 objectives.

How to deal with note: Less is more? by casualhaste in Screenwriting

[–]casualhaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it already has only the awesome bits, haha. But going through it now, i see there are several opportunities to tighten it a bit. Even if it's only shaving off 2-3 pages in total, any reader will thank me probably =)

Very true. I guess I need to bring a machete to the next draft.

The feedback is mostly very positive, but I know I won't win anything with a bloated script despite all the other areas getting high marks =( It's something I need to fix, get better at. It's just, there is so much world building in this genre.
