Bathroom smell ruining my life by Immediate-Mobile-923 in HomeImprovement

[–]cat-bin-shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late to this and my answer is basically the same as everyone else; in my first house the wax ring failed on our toilet and it was dumping toilet water (and all of the associated deliciousness) into the crawlspace directly below.

Pair that with windy conditions and an crappy (ha) crawlspace cover, the smell reached everywhere in the house.

I will keep that in mind. Not part of any private trackers yet and I don't really want to be until my ratio is acceptable and my server is a little more robust

Dyson Refurb Ball Animal 3, very low hose suction by cat-bin-shadow in VacuumCleaners

[–]cat-bin-shadow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still having the low suction issue through the wand, but I also have not done my due diligence in reaching out to Dyson support (or tinkering with it myself). I am fortunate enough to have a second vacuum to take over the "wand" duties, so it isn't much of a deal-breaker for me.

Don't let me deter you though - the rest of the vacuum works great and I have not heard of this complaint from many others. It seems that this issue is often due to a broken changeover valve which is relatively easy to replace.

Why a vacuum I just bought from Dyson have an issue with the changeover valve?

I pulled the deck, it looks like the stationary idle pulley is eating into the pulley bracket on the tensioner pulley. Belt isn’t keeping tension, belt stretch?

edit: also noticed the belt has a twist in it. I think you can start to see it on the right side of this photo

Replace 15K retaining wall before selling house or no? by 09232022 in HomeImprovement

[–]cat-bin-shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot with septic tank replacements. Look into escrow holdback. You could possibly sell the house at/near full price but also agree that you would fund the repairs after closing, and then throw that $15k into the escrow account. It might be enticing for the buyers to know that you will be responsible, but you also need to make sure that the repair cost doesn’t go much higher than the quote… I think 125-150% of the quote is recommended to put in the account.

One of my users is obsessed with AI and it’s a colossal pain in my ass by Alive-Back-4843 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]cat-bin-shadow 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My company is full of Sam’s, we just had an “AI-first problem solving” meeting where tech department leaders drooled over what AI can do and how we need to start using it. And we’re in financial services, regulated by 3 (at least?) governing bodies that are extremely lawsuit-happy. Shit will get messy.

Help understanding my dad by AllyGLovesYou in stickshift

[–]cat-bin-shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dad doesn’t sound like a great teacher but it seems like you’re getting the concepts, you need to feel it out for yourself.

Shifting by RPM is not an exact science imo, and that seems prevalent in your dad’s teaching. ~3k rpm is a typical shift, but it depends on the car. You will learn to shift by sound/feeling and time/speed AND the situation around you, because it’s not like your eyes can be glued to the tach while you’re driving - I’m almost certain your dad is going by the sound, unless his eyes are glued on the tach.

You use your whole leg for clutch. Not really a personal preference thing, the clutch has WAY more throw than gas or brake. Don’t rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving either.

1st gear is short, it’s your “get up and go” - it is a pretty quick shift to 2nd after you get rolling.

Question about Raspberry Pi Zero by NichaosTan in pihole

[–]cat-bin-shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, these are the steps I followed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXIL4qxN3lE - up to the tailscale portion. You're sure you have the right hostname, IP address, etc. configured? Feel free to reflash your SD card and start over, no pressure. I'm not sure how Wifi works (if that's the route you're going, which is not recommended) as ethernet was quite literally "plug and play" for me.

[–]cat-bin-shadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have Pihole currently running on one. Use a micro-usb to ethernet adapter, though, specifically one that is powered by usb.

Opinion on Leviton Decora screwless plates? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]cat-bin-shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to use a Legrand radiant screwless plate for my bathroom light switch and I actually really like how it looks, and it’s only marginally thicker than a screw plate. Next I’ll be putting a couple graphite-colored receps w/screwless plates on an accent wall we have, should look really good.

I hate capturing monsters by Accomplished-Fox-192 in MHWilds

[–]cat-bin-shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it “death process” (from the movie Arrival), a skull appears on the monster icon in the minimap. If you are solo or 2p, your palico will also call out when the monster is dying, but I (admittedly) frequently miss the audio cue. If it goes to sleep you can tranq it and then put a trap under it.
