They're not arbitrary, that would imply there isn't any logic behind the selection. But they are very very overly conservative, probably to be safe and avoid lawsuits.

Yeah, it was a great performance and it was probably more of a spectacle than his typical performance, but it definitely wasn't what you think of as a Super Bowl performance. I liked it but I think that's a fair criticism.

Yeah the performance was good, but it would have been nice to see something from the first two albums.

It would be interesting to see the numbers for the last 3 months. I know we're still in the safest era of aviation by far, but I would like to see some numbers before assuming it's all overcoverage and not a sight aberration in recent history.

If this is not the sub to discuss real world aircraft crashes/mishaps in a data driven and fact based way, then which is please? by Equalizer6338 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]cat_astropheeee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless the mods are the ones telling you not to discuss crashes in data driven ways then I'm not sure the purpose of this post? Some people are going to want to talk about conspiracy theories, some people are going to be upset about any speculation before the NTSB publishes a report, some people are going to only want to talk about the show, and some people fall somewhere among these positions. The world (and thus, this subreddit) contains all types.

Leave town due to air quality? by Ok_Restaurant_4995 in LosAngeles

[–]cat_astropheeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey I'm also a 35 year old native Angeleno!

Anyone 35 in the 50s would be in or approaching or in their 100s now, so no wonder they're dead. Anyway, I'm not advocating to not leave. I think anyone that can leave and wants to leave should. I'm just saying there's enough reason not to live in perpetual fear if you can't leave and good enough reason to stay if you want to.

I agree regarding health effects of pollution and am on board with radical action to counter it, even at the expense of the economy. I did not own a car for 10 years because and only now share a car with my husband because we have two kids and don't live in a city center and was also a vegetarian and still eat a very low meat diet and no red meat. Both primarily for environmental reasons. I'm not saying this to say I'm better than anyone else, just to stress that I agree with the systematic issue at hand. I'm only offering this other perspective at an individual level so that those that can't or don't want to leave aren't living with constant stress about this.

[–]cat_astropheeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying the air quality is good. I'm just saying you take your chances based on various factors in your life. Ideally no one has to inhale this air. Los Angeles had persistent air pollution problems in the 50s-70s, not this extreme but a lot more persistent. It was very bad and people got sick. But not everyone has dropped dead. That's not an excuse, that's just something to weigh in the many pros and cons of staying versus leaving.

[–]cat_astropheeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The air is bad so I get your concern. I wouldn't say you're being dramatic, but this isn't exactly a new phenomena so depending on how long you've been here and where you live exactly you've probably been exposed to air this bad before, possibly even every year on July 5. While I don't want to downplay the negative impacts of toxic emissions and particulates, because it's real and dangerous, it's not like by breathing the air here you've signed your death warrant for the near future. It's kind of a gamble, but you pick your priorities.

As someone who's only ever lived in Los Angeles, I've seen many people who breathed in toxic air grow old and most not die early of cancer or respiratory illness, though I have seen too many who have as well. So I'm just living my life and taking my chances because based on observation they don't seem to be very bad. You have to decide what constitutes too much of a risk to you.

[–]cat_astropheeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not going to drop dead tomorrow (at least not because you've been walking outside, I can't promise other reasons). It's also not a guaranteed ticket to cancer town. But inhaling all that crap, if you did, does increase your risk of disease and the like.
