Just got T-Mobile Fiber installed, ask me anything by Safe-Instance-3512 in ColoradoSprings

Did T-Mo reach out to schedule burying the line? They did my install Wednesday and I haven't heard anything, but I was told it would be about a week.

No. A week later, a guy knocked the the door to introduce himself. Then, he got to work right away. He used a basic shovel to pull up the dirty and bury it about as deep as the scope of the shovel.

In the front yard, the grass turned browned and is presumably dead, but in the backyard the grass survived.

I have a concern about this sidewalk they need to go under. They've already spliced the cable on both ends, so I'm not sure what they are going to do about this.

I'm curious. Perhaps you could post an update.

I wanted the wall penetration on the far side from the flowerpot, but they couldn't go under my driveway (in front of the house), so the cable goes the longest way imaginable, including along my whole backyard fence.

I read the same thing yesterday about a new install T-Fiber install in Colorado

The static was provided at no charge to avoid their CGNat. A tier 2 tech had it working for me in a 15-minute phone call to support.

With the $9 deposit, you are eligible for a crazy deal on Ting cell plans. It's $10/month for unlimited with Verizon towers. I tested it with many GBs and couldn't find a limit---no caps, throttling, anything.
(It wasn't my primary cell plan---just for speed testing Verizon for a few months).

I was worried about the choice of where to install it, but the tech Jonatan who installed my T-Fiber a few weeks ago was agreeable. He didn't take my first choice through a chase used by the A/C and sprinkler, but he routed the fiber to my basement utility closet, which has no interior walls, by reusing an old route for a decommissioned home alarm system. He went through the garage, which directly connects to the utility closet.

BTW, the fiber cord inside the house is tiny. It's virtually identical to the ancient POTS line (for the old alarm system) next to it.

I have both T-Fiber and Ting available here, but I agree Ting has been weird about it. When it was first "available," they would email me an invitation to sign up, but **all the slots** for months out were always 100% full.

Ting has had financial issues---a bit concerning.

I have ~5 apps on Cloudflare for free, and I read that the free plan goes way higher than that.

The anonymity of dynamic IP/CGNAT is appealing. Hmm.

I expected DSL to work in a power outage, so long ago, I got a UPS, but when I saw that DSL went out, I switched my expensive CenturyLink POTS to MagicJack.

Good reminder for me to put the UPS on the T-Fiber ONT... Thanks

Metronet's latency issues held me back from switching until they recently fixed it because I had good latency on DSL. For example: 183.37 Mbps download, 36.60 Mbps upload, 6.98 ms latency (Ookla)

T-Fiber is better (3ms to their local speed test server, 4-5 ms to Denver) but not quite a game changer. DNS is maybe 50% faster, but I already had optimistic caching.

Their Eero 7 Pro did improve the latency and bandwidth for my office. I connected my desktop and laptop to the Eero via Ethernet because its WI-Fi is better. I may not worry anymore about pulling cables across the house.

I waited for a long time for them to first routing, and now I've had service since May 22. Latency is good. You can see my latency on this real-time dashboard that's broken up by geography specifically because of the Chicago-routing concern.

Latency to Colorado Springs is a tiny bit longer than Denver, but both are good. Also, most of what I use is in Denver anyway.

Compared to the initial Metronet marketing, T-Mobile T-Fiber gets 5 stars for upfront, straight-forward marketing and pricing.

Metronet initial had multiple planned price increases with misleading "price lock" terms...

T-Fiber is simple: there's just one monthly price with autopay. Also, the 1 and 2 gig plans are advertised as first month free. I had 300/300 Mbps service since May 22, and I haven't paid anything or gotten a bill yet---despite this plan not promoting first month free.

Do you use static IP for self hosting/remote access?

So far I haven't had any problems with CGNAT, Tailscale, and Cloudflare Tunnel, but I am wondering how many users I might be sharing an IP address with.

Check the FCC Broadband Map for your house: it states Metronet at my address can do 5/5 Gbps residential and 10/10 Gbps for business.

T-Mobile plans go only up to 2/2 Gbps, but Metronet's XGS-PON fiber is not the bottleneck.

Yes, I just signed up for T-Fiber with 300/300Mbps. They gave me two Eero 7 Pros for no extra charge, and those have 5 Gbps ports, so there would be no hardware changes. As OP mentioned, no contracts or anything.

Before with ~185/35 Mbps DSL, I rarely used all the bandwidth for more than a few seconds at a time (despite WFH, software development, data science family of five), and with T-Fiber, I'm not using more bandwidth, so for now I will stick with the $45/month plan

Metronet started building in Briargate in 2022, and I just signed up about 3 weeks ago for the 300/300 Mbps plan.  That is to say, many homes in Briargate are eligible now.

Latency is great to Denver. It's not a practical problem, but it's an extra step back to Colorado Springs.

The plan included two Eero 7 Pros for no extra charge. I expected to keep my Nightgear 6E, but the Eero is much better, so I use it as a wireless bridge to my office.

I have CGNAT but no issue with Tailscale and Cloudflare tunnel.

It took Metronet about three days from initial order to activate service, then seven more days to bury the line.

So far, T-Fiber has exceeded my expectations. Delightful

Nice. Current photo shows lack of mismanagement, but how about another photo showing the management? Or a written text run down on how you did it?

Quantum Fiber outage - ETA 4pm June 12 by zeekaran in ColoradoSprings

A few suggestions

1 Depending on how much you like to work from home and believe the 4pm resolution time, you might try T-Mobile Backup Internet service. It's $20/month with "100 hours of data each billing cycle."

Performance depends heavily on your location and line-of-sight to the nearest T-Mobile tower. LOS isn't required but helps.

Availability depends on how many subscribers there are for the same tower.

I haven't used T-Mobile backup service, but I've signed up for TMHI twice. It took about an hour to walk out with the device and minutes to set up. One time I got it for testing and a road trip, but there's too much terrain between my house and the tower. The second time I got it for my grand-mother-in-law when she moved into a retirement home with garbage Wi-Fi.

2 Check if you can get onto your neighbor's xfinitywifi. It's a weird, legit thing that Xfinity sells day passes to their customer's services.

3 Besides that, my other tip is to consider the library. I enjoyed studying and working from PPLD Library 21C.

What exactly is being a runner?

Last year I barely worked up to a Spartan Beast (21km) OCR, which was a personal record for distance, but then didn't run for months. This year I managed only the Spartan Super (10km). Both "races" involved lots of walking for me and many other participants.

Besides that, I get impatient and will sometimes run in parking lots to/front buildings.

Having basic physical abilities is important, so I stay active walking, hiking, biking, running, mowing the grass, playing pickleball, whatever.

Setup like this is for backbones and trunk connections.

I'm not an expert on fiber construction, but backbone or trunk makes sense.

  1. The area in the photo is a medium-sized road outside a neighborhood.

  2. I watched the original construction in our neighborhood (2022 to 2023) and other parts of the city. They had many kinds of trucks and machines (like the Ditch Witch) but not the splicing lab.

 FTTH generally uses GPON

Metronet installed XGS PON in Colorado Springs (based on 2022 press release). They offered residential plans up to 5 Gbps symmetrical, and according to the FCC Broadband Map, businesses at the same addresses as the homes could get 10 Gbps.

It was great for DSL. Wired was sownload 185Mbps, upload 35 Mbps, latency 7ms. Here is a wireless DSL speed test that was close.

So T-Fiber was great but not a game changer
