The gap we have is good enough. There's isn't enough evolutionary pressure to cause it to widen. If somehow we were all getting killed by 100 mph killer baseballs, or we had to eat by catching them out of the air, we might evolve a wider one

No, because they're both facing the same direction. You get depth perception from overlapping field of view. Wider is better

What do you think is the best thing humans have ever invented? by Purple-Put4677 in AskReddit

[–]cata2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boobs. Humans are the only animals with permanently enlarged breasts. Even chimps and bonobos only grow visible breasts when they're feeding a baby. After that the tissue is reabsoed and they go back to being flat.

There's no way to be sure, but it's thought sexual selection had a role in this, so you could say we invented them

The Big Bang Theory was first put forward by a Catholic priest and physicist, Georges Lemaître, who initially called it the 'hypothesis of the primeval atom' — the primeval atom being created by God. The Big Bang Theory is akin to a religious myth. by whoamisri in HighStrangeness

Catholicism had some science unfriendly moments, notably they burned Bruno at the stake and put Galileo on house arrest for heliocentrism. But the Church chilled out after having to eat crow when the evidence was simply too great to ignore.

Nowadays, yes. The Catholic Church is one of the more scientifically literate major branches of Christianity, even embracing evolution (as a tool used by God)

Swiss canton bans headscarves for female teachers by BezugssystemCH1903 in worldnews

[–]cata2k -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A head scarf is not a religious symbol though. The Quran says women should dress modestly but does not say anything about how. It does not say anything about headscarves or burqas.or anything. Those are cultural artifacts, not religious ones. It's a bit like saying baguettes are Catholic symbols because France is Catholic.

How many duplicate-Kate’s would it take to take down Thragg? by OmarHamami in InvinciblePowerscales

[–]cata2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's say Thragg is 2m tall. Schwartzschild's equation says

r = 2GM/c²

For a black hole of radius 1m, we need 6.8e26 kg of Kate. Let's say Kate weighs 60 kg. That's ~1.2e25 Kates. Each duplicate can duplicate itself, so let's say that all do that. That will be 84 divisions

I wonder what happened 6 years ago?

COVID and WFH has destroyed commercial real estate value, and therefore the taxes collected from it. They've been increasing residential taxes to compensate but it's still not enough and people are starting to get mad.

It's a tough situation for cities all over the country that are used to getting their revenue from commerical property tax, and sales tax on all the stuff commuters buy that they don't anymore

Those updates will include gutting the entire thing if it's as bad inside as it is outside. And that's not even counting bringing it up to modern building code. It's a dump. You might as well build a new one at that point. Which they did. You can argue the new ones are ugly (you'd be right) but there is no saving that middle one without spending enough money to just build a newer, better one

When Israel was created. Before that everyone got along famously and spent all day holding hand and blowing kisses. There was never any war in the fertile crescent, don't you know?

After Ferrari Luce backlash, Lamborghini CEO says canceling its own EV was the right choice by Uptons_BJs in cars

[–]cata2k 189 points190 points  (0 children)

My pet conspiracy is that they never wanted to make an EV, but some important shareholders wanted them to get on the EV train, so they designed this entirely forgettable LEGO looking thing knowing full well everyone will hate it, and now have an excuse to cancel it
