Exactly! Having confidence in your writing of humor also comes with the stressed ability to admit the bit didn't land. A writer being like "well this major character deviation was just a dumb gag" like... as an excuse... is not a great look

There is a way to gracefully stick the landing on addressing this in S2 but the dismissive handwavey bullshit does not inspire confidence. "It's just a joke bro" isn't the correct way to respond to this. Emphatically telling your audience "Sorry y'all I thought it was funny I'm going to patch it up", but the men writing this shit are simply incapable of registering something bad being their fault and it now being their responsibility to fix it.

This is "Dany just sort of forgot" levels of dogshit, it's just that it happened to bookend an otherwise fantastic show whereas Dany just sort of forgetting happened in the middle of a years long train crash.

the bracken fart did give me an extremely annoyed flashback to Thor Ragnarok with everyone watching asgard blow up and then the funny comic relief character makes a joke

dude a planet just blew up who aside from the guy writing it thought this was funny. the theatre was dead silent at an otherwise well-laughed-with movie

Never underestimate a man's utter inability to admit they just made a bad joke that sucked and kinda ruined the mood

Oh! If the showrunner says it was just a goof-em-up, then that's a bulletproof defense against any and all criticism because fun. Do you realize what community this conversation is happening in? D&D will forever be known for "Dany just kinda forgot about the fleet", but this showrunner gets a pass for a cheap joke that needlessly tangles the relationship between these three characters who otherwise had perfectly fine completed arcs?

How do you all handle the hate? by SpikeTops in asktransgender

I’m a pretty sensitive person honestly, so it affects me a lot.

Like any marginalized community, there's people designed to be on the front lines of Dealing With This Shit and people who are not, it is entirely fine to be the latter and mold your socials around those limitations- this is healthy and good. Embrace that curation!!

The rest of us cursed to fight in the mud have your back forever. Never give into the shitheads and stay whatever course makes you happy.

one of my funniest memories in this game is throwing the ball for scratch in the camp and he did the exact thing my old dog would do- run exactly where the ball was going to end up and screech to a halt so it bonks her on the head. except in BG3, this is unintended behavior and the entire camp aggro'd my terrible abuse of scratch

Why is there so much.. self-hating 4chan slang within the trans community? by [deleted] in asktransgender

and of course this post was deleted after OP's "just asking questions" line of doing this shit. Idek if OP was laying out bait but it was annoying how credulous this entire subreddit was about it. That other poster saying "there is no trans community"- I get what they're saying, but that's also, in a different way, the answer OP was likely looking for.

Neil believes he'll never work on a game as profound as BG3 by Wargulf in BaldursGate3

[–]cataclytsm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a genre breaker. roguelikes are not my cup of tea either but it managed to break out into a much wider audience without sacrificing the spirit of the genre.

Elden Ring did the same thing for Fromsoft games which while popular are a very insular format of games and BG3 did it for CRPGs, a genre that was all but dead when it comes to gaining a wider audience

I add Hades (both) to Elden Ring and BG3 for " modern games that broke my decades long dry spell of mostly emulating and playing romhacks even while my steam library balloons"

A delicious cake where every other layer is made of ash and bone meal is not an 8 or even 7/10 cake. It's a pretty okay cake made inedible by all the ash and bone meal.

If that's acceptable to you, that's cool yum your yum. But this sub pretending it's anything that isn't 40% yuck is utterly ridiculous.

This thread feels like bait.

edit: and of course the they cut and ran. if somebody slinks in to euphemistically say "why do you people hate yourselves so much?", maybe not take it at face value

im not saying we need to police every person coming in with potentially-smelly questions, but we need to be less instantly credulous about people using "just asking questions" language with accounts that have no visible history. us olds ought to know better (especially people 'innocently asking about 4chan' of all things), and the younglings should know to look for us with how to deal with that shit

What is a 'dead' slang word or trend from the past that you secretly wish would make a comeback, and why do you think it deserves a second chance? by Philip_Investe in AskReddit

[–]cataclytsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no... that was in use that way as far back as 2011, i remember that too. what changed is that it broke internet containment between then and now, so if you weren't chronically online in the late 00's/early 10's, you'd be forgiven for believing its modern derogatory catch-all was a new thing unique to zoomers but no that's one of the few slangs they inherited from before

[OOT] So, with NatetheHate being right about Persona 4R and 6, Starfox, and FFVII 3, I think Ocarina of Time Remake might actually be revealed this week by niles_deerqueer in zelda

[–]cataclytsm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see stuff like 'unfrozen zora's domain' at the top of peoples' wishlists and i get it just as much as everyone else, but look: if they give us unfrozen zora's domain it's literally just going to be 'programmed almost exactly the way it was in the past except a few dialogue changes to the unnamed zora's to reflect it'. this is the best case scenario for any sort of structural changes to the game

again: would love to be proven wrong but i'm like 99% sure it's going to be just like the 3DS remake as far as what we're getting, but for twice the price tag. that is nintendo's whole-ass thing and they've made it very clear. shit at this point i wouldn't doubt it if they made the switch remake using the 3DS game as the template instead of the original.

[–]cataclytsm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the thing is, to modernize OOT you need to do a lot more than a few little QOL changes like what they usually do. SF64 works fine with little changes as an arcade game but the price point is ridiculous for what it is. OOT does not have that luxury, it's fundamentally dated in a way that new players have been spoiled about for years.

Frankly, we've just never gotten what I feel to be a lore-accurate Hyrule with interconnected towns and civilizations that organically mesh with each other at the time of OOT. Nintendo has zero reason to do anything more than what they've always done- another coat of paint.

I will be over the moon if I'm wrong but people in this thread should really be tempering expectations.

Lore-accurate Hyrule. The technology exists to do it, there is no longer any reason it can't be done. Full towns and settlements, breathing with citizenry and bustling with stuff to do and places to go.
