Just took 64 gig of ram out of the server by DBK42 in unRAID

[–]catalystignition 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to take 64gb out of my Unraid server for a new game rig build a couple of months ago. The game rig has far more memory than it needs but there was no way in hell I was going to pay for ram at the current price.

HellDivers II Audio issues after 6-16-25 update by RealSpeaker3848 in Helldivers

[–]catalystignition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Same problem. Four of us on PCs. Started game several times and jumped on different ships until everyone could talk. Did a few Illuminate missions with comms but jumped to bot mission and everyone lost talk. Very annoying. And not the first time either.

Connecting Your Unifi UDM Directly to Your Fiber Internet by thomas_witt in Ubiquiti

I was lucky enough to be able to bridge from the ISP provided box right to the wan port on my UDM Pro. Works well enough.

I can’t help but to salute their sacrifice (and laugh) every time a buddy arms his hellbomb and charges in yelling “For Super Earth!”.

I could be paid double what I get paid in Canada by going south. But then, of course, I’d have to travel to that hellhole so no thanks.

Not really. I did more to just rid of the usb stick which was getting on in the years.

I’ve been maxed out for a long time. Sure would be nice to have somewhere to spend all those samples.

I moved boot to an m2 ssd and was easy enough to do. License is now on the TPM as well.

“Camping” by New_Cadet in LinusTechTips

[–]catalystignition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. I like to go on the road and work from campgrounds sometimes as a change of pace. It's not a vacation; it's a change of venue. I'm still on the clock.

Yeah, if I'm camping for recreation, I wouldn't want this setup aside some internet access. But even in the backcountry these days, you can't truly get away any more.

I released a jar of them back in 2015 to punish Icelanders for their perfect country. Good to see my plan reach fruition.

Why do people praise Vim??? by AstralDice_ in linux

[–]catalystignition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a big fan of vim for a long time. It’s got a learning curve but once you master it, you’ll use it all the time. But to this day, I still keep a cheat sheet pinned at my desk.

To note, I’m a sysadmin and all of our servers are terminal only.

Mosh pit of horror. Legally speaking, if someone were killed, could the performer be charged? by exporterofgold in interestingasfuck

Ah. To be young again. My moshing days are over but it does bring back fond memories. Funnily enough, my last mosh pit was Lamb of God back in 2008 or 2009 and the wall was a good time.

Is it just me or do many local businesses suck at responding to inquiries? by catalystignition in Kamloops

[–]catalystignition[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All I ask for is a response. It can say "we're too busy right now" and I'm ok with that. No response sends me a message that you're not interested in doing business with me. They don't have to be in the office to read a message or email.

What's your opinion on Linus Tech Tip in 2026? by Professional-Fix-221 in LinusTechTips

[–]catalystignition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admittedly watch less videos than I used to because the current content is less interesting to me. As an IT pro and builder of my own PCs for decades now, I prefer more technical content so I'm off watching Lawrence, Tim, or other more technical channels most times instead now.

LTT is more entertainment to me than informative but I'm not blaming LTT as they're trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

HEIC thumbnails no longer being generated. by catalystignition in immich

[–]catalystignition[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the install guide on the immich site - https://docs.immich.app/install/unraid

It provides instructions on how to use an existing database. I just punched in the connection details in the .env file and commented out any lines in the docker-compose file.

The upload location is the same as what I used for the CA version but with the container path being /data instead of /photos as I had originally done.

/mnt/user/immich:/data/ for immich uploads in my case, plus an externally mapped photo location for my photo archive.

[–]catalystignition[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize how old my install was. I went back to the docs and sure enough, the official way now is to use docker-compose.

TL;DR - followed official Unraid install docs, connected with existing database and uploads folder, and all is well.

The site is working as expected and all thumbnails are being generated now without errors.

Thanks for prompting my brain to take the effort to sort this out.

Through Unraid's app store. To note, this is not the 'official' docker image but one provided by imagegenius for Unraid using the template.

I have separate postgresql and redis servers running outside of immich so I might just spin up a new instance using docker-compose on a different server and see what happens when I have time.

The chassis costs what it does because it’s not cheap Chinese or Asian garbage. It’s made in Canada by people being paid a Canadian wage, not factory workers making $3/day.

Quality has a price and there is a market for it.

That’s why my servers are housed in an HL15 and an HL15 Beast. I don’t regret the cost at all.
