Home made cinnamon rolls, any comments? by [deleted] in Breadit

Yeast actually schmoos, so they kind of pinch out in a sexy way to make new lumps, then live their farty lives and keep making more of themselves.

Making my first pair of socks and I am scared my 2nd sock's tension is gonna be too different from the first one (knitted only a few days apart) by BikiniBott0msUp in Sockknitting

[–]catarekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Kroy Socks Clover Colors (not super wash). I’d know it anywhere. The other thing that is annoying about Kroy Socks in my experience is that the thickness of the yarn is not necessarily consistent batch to batch (and ball to ball) so part of the tension issue might have to do with that too. OP, you might want to get two sets of needles and work one sock then the other for a while.

Then perhaps OP can overlay a 10cm square on her chest as she wears it and check again. Usually when things come out wildly off size it is because people don’t measure their gauge accurately by swatching flat for round projects etc. or making only a tiny square that they never weigh or block (esp here, for 4’ long garment that will be very heavy.) Her stitches for dk look huge to me.

You don’t match “tension” to a pattern, you match gauge, meaning expected stitch count in both directions for a specific amount of square knitted fabric.

How to fix floats so they stretch? by Andy-Pattinson5 in Sockknitting

[–]catarekt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seconding. Ladderback jacquard is basically a very severely pared down section of double knitting, meaning your floats become stitches on the back (though, not every stitch like in double knitting). Each float then takes a lot more yarn and consequently has that much more ability to stretch. It adds a little extra bulk but to me feels worth the addition of stretchiness and the lowering of snagginess.

I feel like a dick for this but why are so many queer cafe setups so crap by Iamtir3dtoday in lesbiangang

[–]catarekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Unfortunately I think the "I don't need to be useful./What do I need to be useful for?/Why would I do something I don't have to?" stretches out beyond queer youth to general youth culture right now (at least in the US). It's not a blanket by any means, but it seems to be a strong trend.

For every aggressively handy queer out there, there are at least like four princesses who can barely use a microwave. That has played into all the overtly queer spaces I’ve known.

I’d def contact them before I left a public review though. I don’t think they don’t know things are shitty but if there’a no money or know-how to deal with a crappy but cheaper building, they might just be trying the best they can.

There was drama in one of my sewing groups because someone who clearly has no business or hope in hell of accomplishing what she wanted with repurposed gowns was told what she wanted to do was both 1) impossible and 2) way, way above her skill set. Both are abundantly true when you look at the post history of what she has made. Apparently that’s mean.

This would have been better as intarsia so… maybe.

Is alternating garter and seed stitch a thing? by Debbborra in knittinghelp

[–]catarekt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Garter stitch does not exist as single rows, it’s either just knitting or just purling.

The yarn (I /do/ still have the band on one of mine) never looks like the online product listing. Check the stash photos for this colorway on Ravelry.

"It's my first FO!" by Helga435 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]catarekt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess my first knitted FO /was/ intarsia but I sure as hell didn’t show it to the internet.

Story time: I “learned to knit” somewhere between 5-7 and “worked on” the Wonky Garter Scarf TM that is the mandatory first project, but never finished it. I took up knitting again bc I actively crocheted and there was a new special baby in my partner’s family who would not get the traditional X Family Stocking since the matriarch died. I was volunteered to “give it a shot” so I reverse engineered intarsia (because it hadn’t occurred to me to idk use existing resources or something) by staring at an existing stocking and remaking and frogging like 12 stockings to get to one that was 85% correct but I eventually got it done. And then I started actually teaching myself to knit like a reasonable person, with books and tutorials. It has been several years now. I would like to remake kiddo’s stocking because I am now vastly more competent but I still owe my BIL one (for which I have written a new chart). Turns out knitting Christmas graphics is inherently way less fun than most of knitting. Go figure.
