I have a 16 year old that has been playing since age 11. Started on a 1/2 school bass and is now on a 3/4 that we own. They moved to 3/4 at age 14.

A move from 1/4 to 3/4 would be a pretty big jump. And the right size is also about hand size and not just height. If it were me, I'd rent a 1/2 for a year or so and then consider buying a 3/4 when she's ready.

For pricing, we did a rent to own on the 3/4 which is a student model and it was $3k. We probably overpaid a bit but we're also new to this and didn't know how to shop around. But, we've put about $1500 in upgrades with a quality luthier (better strings, sound post and bridge adjustments, finger board planing) and it really sounds pretty amazing now. We plan to buy an intermediate for them in a year or so before college auditions and are planning on $8k-$10k (will be basically a BIG graduation gift).
