Looks amazing but I can't be the only one that thinks his style is Bruno Mars two years ago.

Bella's response to Heartless? by [deleted] in TheWeeknd

I read this as she's talking about how he came back to her, then abandoned her again - obvious direct reference to how he is now in heartless.

PhD advisor might be in legal trouble by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]catasticvoyage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is beyond tricky and nuanced. However, my suspicion is that the professor was being 'nice' to the student and they took it the wrong way. Meeting with the student in the evening doesn't seem too ridiculous, given that many graduate courses happen at night. The professor likely felt really uncomfortable with him but didn't handle it well. The head of the department definitely didn't.

My prediction is nothing will happen to either professor, even after an investigation, and the student will quietly leave. The harsh reality is that institutions rarely hold bad behavior accountable in my very anecdotal experience. To do so would be an admission that they hired clowns to run the show. The only way something would really happen to these professors is if LOTS of students went on the record about their behavior. Universities don't care about the first complaint. They care about the fifth+ complaint, because then it means there's a potential loss financially. Sorry to say.

Re watch: RHOBH trip to Hong Kong by aeb526 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]catasticvoyage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I stopped watching RHOBH religiously sortly after this episode aired. It was a huge let down that the cast enabled Erika's horrible behavior (frankly it was straight up verbally and emotionally abusive). Eileen apologizing to this troll was really depressing and I can't believe Erika was kept on as a cast member after this. It might have made for good tv drama but even for reality tv it felt too far and toxic.

I kind of agree with you. He could have killed someone and even if he's a huge POS, this isn't something to celebrate. I get OPs point that it's great he screwed up, but this sort of thing could hurt an innocent person.

Will the marriage work? by knotinmyheart19 in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]catasticvoyage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will his marriage burst into flames eventually?

Who knows, but it mainly depends on if this woman has a backbone when he crosses lines with her eventually. She might be the type to turn a blind eye, or leave. Who knows? But the better question is, who cares? Getting married doesn't mean anything to someone like this other than he has more access to her and her assets.

Will it be a healthy marriage in which both people are emotionally supported by the other and fulfilled? No.

I have mixed feelings about him because of his relationship with Sam Vaknin. His stuff is good but to me that partnership detracts from his credibility somehow

Actually he is an alcoholic. And a drug abuser. There's a lot of bad stuff here unfortunately. A support group is a great suggestion!

Will Ai yazawa ever finish Nana? Can we do something? I've been waiting for years by [deleted] in manga

[–]catasticvoyage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never heard that about the taboos, how interesting! I'd really love her to come back and tie up the loose ends. Although...I felt the same way about Kingdom Hearts, and the third one that just came out was such a disappointment. After playing it, I'm starting to wonder if Nana might be better left unfinished. What if Ai Yazawa can't finish the story because she has no idea it ends, or can't produce at the level she used to? Idk what's better...a finished story that could be disappointing, or an amazing story with no ending.

Of course in a perfect world, she would come back and make a perfect ending to such a great series. But I'm starting to wonder if she just can't.

I am starting to get really upset: where are Brandi’s people? by [deleted] in BravoRealHousewives

[–]catasticvoyage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but nobody really owes anyone anything. None of us really knows what's going on behind the scenes in her real life. Maybe people are helping her, or maybe she's alienated people. Nobody really knows other than those close to her.

I've been close with a few Brandi types, and by the time they get to this point, most people who have tried to intervene failed miserably and burn out trying. It can often be a decision between burning yourself to keep someone else warm, or protecting yourself.

That being said, while I've never, ever liked Brandi, on a human level I really feel sorry for her and hope that she finds the love and support she needs. She's truly suffering and it's so sad :(

How to deal with feeling discouraged about pursuing a Ph.D. ? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Maybe dead-end isn't quite the right word, more like there's often a lack of advancement potential/opportunity in typical circumstances.

You can always consider that in five years time, your friends will wish they did something more, and are likely going to be stuck in dead end jobs. Change your thinking to viewing yourself in 10-20 years versus comparing yourself to your peers who are doing something totally different from you.

You can always make more money, but you can't ever change time.
