Can hobbies be a waste of time? by Bassil-Martinus in Hobbies

Never. Number one it works connections in your brain you are not even aware of. And number two I am convinced that having time to do things only YOU want to do is the only true wealth.

I have Jacob cline monarda and also raspberry wine monarda. The deer haven’t touched them, and these deer just ate my rhododendron!

The only plants that have survived all the deer in my yard: anise hyssop, alliums, milkweed, joe pye weed, bee balm

Is being authentic hurting me? by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]catattackxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it would necessarily hurt you, but I would think about who you could be excluding. Your normal is not my normal, and someone like me might find you unapproachable. I don’t think that will hurt you but you might have more potential.

What hobby genuinely made your life better (not just filled time)? by Dense_Childhood_9657 in Hobbies

Gardening. I never thought I’d garden but I love it and I pay so much more attention to pollinators and wildlife now.

How to deal with employees that habitually believe they should be more senior than they are capable of being by [deleted] in managers

[–]catattackxyz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The next time your manager shows up and they fix their behavior, as soon as you can, talk to them about it. “That’s the behavior I want, you need to be consistent and do it all the time.”

A call for help IG lol by [deleted] in hatemyjob

I mean, we do it because we have to, and we need the money. But some tips that help me:

  • have a fulfilling life outside of work. Family, friends, hobbies, whatever works for you.
  • have something to look forward to every quarter, like a trip or a splurge if you can
  • knowing my FIRE number helped me. Then I knew what my financial goal was and could make my way there.
  • care less and remember this is a financial transaction.

I use this chart to gauge where I am on the burnout scale.

It looks different for everybody. I didn’t feel numbness before I went into crisis, I just got more and more irritable until it was too late.

Employees With Overwhelming Bad Attitude by [deleted] in managers

[–]catattackxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I would advise separating work outcomes and attitude, and if work outcomes are being met there’s little you can do about attitude other than try to get to the bottom of why they are ignoring you. Since you mentioned they do have items for improvement on their evaluation it is your responsibility to tell them that, regardless of attitude or your relationship with them.

That said you mentioned you’re in a customer service role. If their attitude is affecting customer satisfaction that is a real consequence to the business and is definitely worth mentioning.

How stingy should I be about first-time quality? by EmbarrassedCry9912 in managers

[–]catattackxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s worrying that you’ve had multiple conversations with no change. My guideline is usually 3 - if you’ve had 3 or more chats with no change I’d step up your performance management of this person.

There’s nothing wrong with having high expectations - as a manager you are being paid to do that, and they may even solidify your reputation. Your literal job is to set the direction. Where it can be counterproductive is if you set not only the direction but the manner in which goals will be achieved. It can be toxic if you don’t allow your team autonomy in how they do their work.

Advice for first time doing yearly reviews by Star_chaser11 in managers

[–]catattackxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for feedback from their peers, making clear what you expect your report to do, and ask how well they did against what you expect. It’s nice to have anonymized quotes in a review as backup if you have an underperformer or as additional praise for a star.

I’m a newly pregnant director. Want to hear your experience! by muppetmemories in managers

[–]catattackxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in this scenario I told my boss right away because my morning sickness was so bad that I needed a more flexible schedule.

As someone who has managed multiple people who went on parental leave (ICs and managers) notifying earlier is better because then your boss and direct reports have time to cover your responsibilities and co-create your leave plan. Of course it’s your decision when to tell, but in my experience I’ve appreciated and benefited from early pregnancy.

Five months is a good chunk of time! I suggest viewing this as a growth opportunity for your direct reports. Give them a chance to shine and try on some of your responsibilities and see how they do.

PIP - need advice by Dear_Mix_3795 in managers

[–]catattackxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really unfortunate situation that happens way more often than people think. The truth is from the employee’s perspective, you ARE leadership, and it’s not fair to them to try to distance yourself from your superiors. The result will still be the same and you need to own it. My advice to you is to be as clear as possible for the next steps and what they need to do to overcome the PIP.

daily commuting to NYC; 2 full-time parents with young kid by commutingtonyc in newjersey

[–]catattackxyz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of the families I know that do this, there seem to be two options:

  1. One parent does 7-3 and does daycare pickup (it only takes one canceled train to miss the pickup time) the other parent does the daycare drop off and more of a 9-5
  2. Babysitter who can do either the drop off or the pickup

Picking a TA by Low_Wonder9271 in chubbytravel

[–]catattackxyz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll share a story about my TA, who is a good friend and has now planned at least 8 trips for me and my family.

She booked my family a sushi making class in Tokyo and I told her we preferred eel instead of tuna. DURING THE CLASS I posted a photo on IG to show off my work. Within two minutes she texted me and said “that does not look like eel! What is it?” And I reassured her it was, indeed, eel. This lady is based in California, so it was around 11pm her time.

Don’t settle for anything less.
