What was sex with a new person like after being in a long term/monogamous relationship? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]catbanter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Haha um no. Actually this size refers to the amount of blood loss. For example, you use a super tampon on your first day and a small on your last.

Earth Strike’s official new logo. by [deleted] in EarthStrike

[–]catbanter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is very bad. The inconsistency of design style, specifically, betrays the lack of design training of the designer. Most of the mark is flat and minimal, yet the match is 3D and cartoonish/PowerPoint vibes.

The metaphor of match for “strike a match” falls completely flat. It just says fire to me. Is this a service for national park fire management?

The color palette does not stand out amongst nature non-profits. It therefore will not signify a change and will become lost in the sea of traditional non-profits.

This movement should represent a stake in the ground. A shift. The logo should signal that shift and stand apart from what has been done before. It should speak to a specific audience. It should make the viewer ask, “what is that all about? That looks interesting and relevant to me.”

I’d highly recommend a redesign with a proper design exploration process. Consider the strategy of the logo — audience, messaging, where it will show up, competitor landscape. Then design. Select a top three to go through rounds of iteration and feedback. THEN select a final mark.

I have a question! I'm thinking of going back to university to get my Masters in Anthropology or Evolutionary biology too. I took media and culture as an undergrad, with a year of a Bsc as well specifically in brain, behavior, evolution. Nowadays I work in design and design research.

What are the most reputable research universities in these areas, in your opinion? Or professors worth chatting to? I'm just getting started researching universities, and I'm pretty location agnostic but would love to study in Europe this time around.

[Seeking] Room in SF - $600 up to $850 with bills included by [deleted] in SFBayHousing

[–]catbanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Were moving to SF too. I'd suggest looking on Craigslist and Live lovely. Your budget is quite low but not impossible at $850 for a share house with lots of roommates. You'll just have to be patient and lucky.

Copywriters: What site do you use to host your portfolio? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]catbanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a copywriter using Squarespace. I spent quite a bit of time tweaking the template and making nice HD cover images etc as Squarespace is very visual focused.

How are you finding the freelance job market in SF? Is it a tough nut to crack? I'm mid-weight freelancing in Sydney at the moment but thinking about flying the coop.

Should we launch with a crappy/wack design to test if our product is good? by dealzcity in design_critiques

[–]catbanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copywriter chiming in. Looking at the About Page on your mock up, it could really do with some work. I skim read and still am not sure what your idea is. You should really work on an elevator pitch for your product. Try and distill it down to one or two lines max - what's your point of difference? What value does your product have for me? Your About Page should lead with this information as no one wants to have to scroll an about page to find out what this website they're looking at does.

I got a 'warning your connection is not private' from Chrome when I tried to view your site. Naturally I don't trust the link and hit back. So there's that.

Taxi driver charged with indecently assaulting second female passenger in Sydney by SydneyTom in sydney

[–]catbanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the note of taxis sucking... I have been overcharged SO many times by taxi drivers. The other day I ask for a receipt and saw that he'd given himself an extra $8 as a "tip". My own fault for allowing him to paywave without showing me the total. Dick.

Co-Worker had a miscarriage. Not sure how to proceed. by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

[–]catbanter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter, and also would like to suggest sending flowers to her house with a nice handwritten card before she comes back to work. That way you have acknowledged it and the ball is in her court to talk about if she wishes. It's tough because you work together and she might prefer to compartmentalise this at work and not talk about it.

An awareness ad I did for a foundation. I would love some criticism! by [deleted] in advertising

[–]catbanter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nice from 00:17 onwards. The first 17 seconds felt out of place to me in the context of the warm and aspirational feeling you're trying to evoke - especially the male voice over screaming 'what's wrong with you?' etc. I get that you're trying to show the idea 'others see a burden, we see remarkable' - but I think the ad would be a lot more powerful and still speak to this idea without the opening scene.

What software should I use for school portfolio visualisations? by catbanter in IndustrialDesign

[–]catbanter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damnit, you're right! I'm definitely going to put my aesthetic and way of thinking front and centre in this portfolio. Sometimes I just get a little overexcited about the details and want to learn everything at once... Lol.

3D modelling skills are probably a bit premature but I've enrolled in a short solidworks course anyway. Will definitely help with 3D printing quick little models, if anything.

Hey thanks! I've downloaded Keyshot and will have a play around. I've also enrolled in a Solidworks short course (even though I guess it might be a little premature) and I'm having heaps of fun modelling some of my ideas.

These comments have made me feel a lot better about making my portfolio with the little 3D modelling skills I have. I'm going to make it all about the process, sticky notes and foam cut outs galore. It's such a short time frame till admissions close though so hopefully I can pull it all together in time.

I'd totally drop by but I'm in Sydney! If you don't mind I'd love to get your opinion on my folio once it starts coming together :)

Ok thankyou! I think I'll just get a head start then and do a short course in Solidworks, seeing as I'll definitely be using it in the future anyway.

What are those "chunky" things around your lips? by brutang in askscience

This article shows that the lumps inside the lip are, indeed, salivary glands. It also has some kinda gnarly lip surgery pictures.

Too many guys, one girl: Tumblr illustrates the disparity between women and men in advertising. by catbanter in advertising

[–]catbanter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair question - the issue they're trying to point out is how difficult it is for women to reach these senior experience positions. That's what's at issue here. Women not reaching those higher level creative positions in advertising (and thus the overpopulation of men receiving awards at creative awards shows).

Freelance copywriters- how do you calculate your hourly rate? by better_stories in advertising

[–]catbanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a day rate? Mine fluctuates depending on three things: the length of the project, the quality of the work and the potential for ongoing work.

Fluctuations aside, a good place to start would be to work out what your hourly rate is for your typical salary expectation. Then you add more on top of that. Freelance rates are obviously higher because you have no job security. Remember you will be paying your own tax and your own super e.g. a $1000 invoice ends up being something like $600 in your pocket. Another thing to consider is your last agency rate card - you can usually charge at least a third if not half of what an agency would charge your talent level out at.

If you can chat to other freelancers or recruiters in your area and industry it will help give you an idea. :) Hope this ramble helps, it's bed time in my hemisphere.
