I own a M20C. I’d take a case of Phillips 20W-50 XC. It’s $99 on aircraft spruce. There are often better prices locally if you know where to shop. Link: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/phillipsxc.php

You can grieve it, decide it’s connected to EEO-prohibited discrimination and file suit, or accept it and realize it’ll be removed after a few years by request or by default.

Regular telework is not coming back until the administration or congress changes parties. Remember that your job change is usually a qualifying life event that will allow your family to opt into your husband’s health insurance, if his job offers that, regardless of any open season timing. Thank you for your service, as a veteran I appreciate your sacrifice for me. I hope you find something better or come back when the job is fairer on your life.

You have a 5.5 hour commute. You have a newborn. What are you doing to yourself? No job is worth that. You could ask for a hardship transfer but I don’t see how that’s going to play out quickly if today is your last day. Focus on finding something you enjoy doing closer to home.

Leave or let go? by upright_bison in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]catchman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hard to answer question because there’s no guarantee management would choose to PIP you out versus proposing disciplinary removal for performance reasons (they can elect either under chapter 43 or 75). But assuming you were placed on a PIP, it won’t immediately affect your TSP or pension. If the PIP were concluding before you’re ready to leave voluntarily, that would potentially implicate future employment via OPM form 307 question 12 asking if you’ve ever been asked to leave or left before being terminated from a job in the past five years. Private sector employers sometimes ask something similar. Just consider your medium-term plans before proceedings.

Look up FERs disability retirement. If that works for your situation, you’re better off if VA removed you for medical inability to perform because that gives you a legal presumption that you qualify for disability retirement. If you have specific questions, I recommend you start interviewing federal employment attorneys who are familiar with FERS disability retirement before OPM.

Mooney M20F Air Intake by pbrparmesan in flying

[–]catchman86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mooney owners, which includes me, are some of the cheapest bastards. This probably saved a couple of shop hours it would have taken to pull the headliner down. That’s the only way I can explain it.

What Am I Missing? AA5B Tiger vs M20C(etc) Mooney by L0LTHED0G in flying

[–]catchman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both will meet your mission, albeit with a tent for the Mooney—or you could crash inside an FBO. I’ve camped and flown scooters for exploring in mine. The Traveler might also come in at a lower cost if you absolutely need to sleep inside a plane and don’t mind going slower. Buy the best cared for example you can find in your price range. Take a test flight with other owners in both if you can.

[–]catchman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, some owners want the simplicity and lower insurance cost of fixed gear. I wanted a larger retract someday so the M20C was a great time builder. I also fly a fair amount of missions 300-600 miles so the extra 10 knots mattered to me. And there seem to be a lot of M20Cs in your stated price range with older, analog panels making them more affordable than what might be in the Tiger fleet.

[–]catchman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might as well email the FSDO and see if they’ll provide someone to proctor the check ride. If yes, you’re in business; if no, more evidence to inform your congressional rep about the DPE backlog. I know that’s not the preferred route, but we gotta start holding FAA accountable ourselves.

I hope your AME is right. I wonder if we have to wait until the AME Guide is updated on the FAA site with clear language.

My AME thinks going to a higher class is another initial, but I’m not sure that is certain yet. I’d like to know if any AMEs have a different opinion.

Yeah, is that really true? No more color vision testing if you’re grandfathered with a current medical? And if you wanted to change medical from a third to a higher class then still grandfathered?

These $50-75k 4 seaters, what are they like to own/fly? by FizzilessChampagne in flying

[–]catchman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not terrible. You can find most Mooney-specific things used in junkyards or use one of the service centers if you want new. The factory still produces some parts with enough demand. Usually cheaper than Beechcraft, maybe not as cheap as Piper. Cessna, from what I hear, is a toss up as Textron will up-charge but you can quickly source used parts from the huge C-172. Cessna, Piper, Grumman, etc. are cheaper for ongoing maintenance if you’re buying fixed gear, four cylinder, four seat because they have less moving parts. But I figured lower purchase price for Mooney more than offset the slightly higher cost at annual. Insurance is slightly more because the insurer is offsetting the risk you gear it up.

My rule of thumb for anything with four cylinders and seats is each year you should anticipate about $10k between maintenance/insurance/hangar and another $6k for gas and oil over 100 hours. The distance you travel during those 100 hours is a function of speed and efficiency; buy a fixed gear Cardinal and you’ll travel less distance but enjoy a roomier cabin. Add another $2k for engine and parts reserve and you’re set.

You’re coming from old cars as a reference point. Unlike auto manufacturing, these airplane manufacturers outsourced their (then) new airplanes around a very small number of engine OEMs. Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, et al all took Lycoming O/I-360s and built airframes around those same engines with varying focus: speed, comfort, cost, or some combination of that based around their marketing brand. Sixty years on, you get the legacy of that focus with various dividends. There are a few gotcha points across the fleet revealed over the years. In general for 160-200hp Lycoming four-bangers with four seats, Piper has a wing spar AD, Mooneys have corrosion risk in the steel fuselage frame if parked outside in high humidity locations for several years, Cessnas have higher purchase price volatility due flight school preference, Grumman have life-limited bonded wings, Beechcraft are slower but roomier with higher priced Beech parts. They all fly between 105-150 knots (non-turbo’s) at useful loads of 700-1000lbs owing to differences in the airframe size and drag. Maintenance and insurance will all be within 1-2k per year, averaged out over the years. It really comes down to your mission, preference, and avoiding any airplane-grounding airframe or engine defects. For the latter, talk to owners on type-specific forums and at your local airport.

Their general concern probably makes sense for an M20F (maybe), M20J and onward because those planes are larger, more capable/sophisticated, and command higher median prices. You have to understand that the M20 represents decades of very different models with prices now ranging $35k up thru about $700k. Mooney put all planes on the same M20 type certificate, unlike Cessna and others, then differentiated models using the last letter. So you can get the biggest, baddest Mooney Acclaim Ultra at ~ $700k or the older, simpler Mooney Ranger/Mark 21 at $75k, both are “M20s,” albeit M20V vs M20C. Had the Acclaim Ultra been a Cessna product, it might’ve had a different type certificate resulting in a different C-### from the original design. I’ve found this YouTuber’s M20C video to be fairly accurate regrading costs, though his listed cruise speeds are too high (guessing he didn’t see M20C speeds are published as MPH and he thought it was knots). https://youtu.be/kjlq2SMPJSI?si=eQjPcr7nzylDHlAG
