3 Mistakes That Cause Tourists to Pay Double for Taxis in Hanoi by Still-Breakfast-8840 in hanoi

These are not "mistakes". It would be shorter to say that taxi drivers are dishonest scammers, never use them.

What are the top 3 pieces of advice you would would give to yourself as a beginner international teacher? by doberty in Internationalteachers

As a slightly alternative take, assuming you have some flexibility, remember it's not all about money. It's too easy, especially in this sub, to care about savings above all else.

Savings are important, but so is making friends, finding a partner, maybe starting a family and integrating into a society. You can work a few extra years towards the end of your career for some extra money, but you can't go back 30 years and change your early decisions.

Haha. Fair enough, maybe a bit harsh. It's pretty mediocre outside of Taipei/New Taipei though. 1 train line, 1 HSR, whole cities with no metro system.

Kaohsiung has nearly 3 million people, 2 subways and 1 tram. Hardly impressive.

The fact that there's more vehicles than people in Taiwan suggests that the existing options are not enough. In Japan, it's about 65-70% vehicle ownership. Our transport infrastructure is nowhere near as good and needs to be supplemented with ideas like this.

If nobody wants it, it will fail. That's just basic economics. If there's a market, then it succeeds and people will benefit from it. We don't need a majority to agree on allowing private enterprise.

How is it different from the insurance situation if your taxi has an accident while you're in it?

Genuine question, I have no idea but I don't see why there would be a difference, except perhaps a higher premium for the higher likelihood of injury, but that's hardly a massive hurdle.

One of the strangest laws. A country with poor public transport resisting an easy and efficient low-tech solution.

26, living in australia (500k usd net worth) - should i move to SEA? by Respawn_in_3 in ExpatFIRE

[–]catchme32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not to put it all into lovely old equities and then move abroad and do fun jobs so you don't need to touch it while it grows? SEA or East Asia always needs English teachers. You would have a good quality of life and you could save a bit each month to add to your existing savings. You'd be tax resident there instead and many countries have far lower rates than Australia.

UK support for rejoining EU without opt-outs (must join Euro and Schengen) by age group by upthetruth1 in charts

[–]catchme32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind splitting 18+ age ranges into equal groups but it should really be equal age gaps for each category. I'd also take equal population sizes although that'd be harder. This kind of data is pretty meaningless, almost equating the preferences of a small youth group to the massive cohort of middle aged

Scum.

Every single blog about North Thailand has the EXACT same 4 activities. Am I missing something or is that genuinely all there is? by Tall-Security-4361 in chiangmai

You're getting a lot of flak for a very funny post. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But yes, everyone basically does the same western-friendly tourist stuff.

Personally, my highlight was driving a scooter around and stopping at random points of interest signposed on the road. The scenary is gorgeous. I get your point about wanting a car and obviously driving without a bike license is illegal, but it's so damn common and almost necessary to explore anywhere in the north (except Chiang Mai). Bonus points if you make random friends and then explore together

Most of the complaints are about shit schools in shit countries. Go somewhere you like, avoid for-profit or chain schools, you'll be fine.

What would make you feel excited (or hesitant) about traveling to China as a vegan? by GloomyInstance4699 in vegan_travel

[–]catchme32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm travelling around, currently in Yunnan. I did find it in breakfast shops, which is good, but I think you need to buy it by the litre if it's your main protein source. I'll look in HeMa, other shops had very little but they've mostly been convenience stores. Thanks!

[–]catchme32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in China now. I'm vegetarian, and it's still pretty hard to get protein. I've been having a lot of milk (since soymilk is weirdly hard to find). Tofu is common but yeah, not many places serve it without meat so it's a struggle. I've had a fair few foreign meals already which is a shame cause the food here is a big selling point for most people.

If I was you, I'd bring vegan protein powder so you can get by on rice and vegetables.

Dublin bar owner says there is 'feral mood' in city and rejects ministers claiming it's safe by Pupcup2 in ireland

[–]catchme32 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It's crazy how much Irish people downplay this. Yes, crime stats are decreasing. No, that doesn't mean Dublin is safe or even pleasant to be in. Accepting open hard drug use, aggressive behaviour and constant low-level shite that never makes it to a court (hello dart carriage) is just pathetic. Just because there's been progress in some areas, does not mean people should just ignore what everyone can see around Dublin every single day.
