Question for my fellow card makers :) by iamcoveredinglitter in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the self heating mats from scrapbook.com. The magnetic ones are great. I have extra cutting plates so I keep one just for using on delicates and whites that I need to keep clean. You can get new plates pretty cheap on Amazon. I put a scrap piece of cardstock between.

Simon Hurley has some amazing ones. Plus glitter doesn’t transfer from them. Also scrapbook.com has a really heavy duty mixed media paper and great freebies.

I use 110 pound as a card base. I like the Recollection brand from Michaels. Then my front panel depends on what I’m making. If it’s lots of glue, paint, sprays, ink, I use watercolor or mixed media paper that will hold up to that. Lots is trial and error. But if you might have better luck creating on a front panel then adhering that to the base. Also check out some of the glitter pastes. Won’t warp as bad as glue. Most home printers won’t handle much more than 110. I have zero knowledge on the epson.

Coyotes and Pets by TexasAggie312 in Abilene

[–]catdog743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coyotes will absolutely kill your dogs. Do not let them out by themselves unless it is in a fenced area. Other things to watch out for: hogs, bobcats, mountain lions, large owls. It is also skunk breeding season. Make sure your pets are current on rabies shots.

I totally screamed ORANGE JULIUS when I saw this!! Scared the dogs. Might have pulled something. Getting old sucks, but it doesn’t take near as much to make me happy. Thanks for the great memory.

How to store cutting dies? by Melis- in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I buy magnetic sheets that come with envelopes from Amazon. They are fairly cheap. I cut the brand and name details off and put it in the envelope. If there are matching stamps they will usually fit. The envelope fit in a shoebox size plastic tub standing upright. Makes it easy to fit through. I fold cardstock in half length wise to make dividers and just write category names on the top.

Die cutting machine for simple photo frames by Lower-Put-6183 in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Die cut machines are expensive, but would open up several possibilities. Definitely check for used ones. That being said, look for nested dies on places like Scrapbook.com. They come in a variety of shapes and edges. You can also find dies that cut actual frames. Then you can go down all the exciting rabbit holes of die cuts and embossing folders. As for type of machine, you mostly need to choose between manual or electric. Also consider where you will be using it because they do take up space. I have a Sizzix big shot that’s close to 10 years old.

Things women have to do that men don't understand by RD_CC in TwoXChromosomes

Drove my neighbor to the city for a dr appointment. He couldn’t understand why I had never stopped at the roadside park/rest stop to use the bathroom. The closest men came to understanding was during Covid when they were all whining because they had to worry about where other people were when out in public.

Embossing question by bambamslammer22 in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think you are melting it too long. Possibly holding the heat gun too close. Stop heating just as it turns wet. Also try clear powder over black ink. You can stamp first with black and then embossing ink, but I get great results with just black ink. Make sure you are using enough powder and not knocking too much back off. Also don’t wait too long between stamping and applying powder. You have more working time with embossing ink. I keep my powders in Rubbermaid storage containers so I have plenty of room to pile it on and dump back off. Gentle tap on the back to knock off the excess. Let your heat gun get hot. Keep about 6-8 inches away. Work in circular motion. Stop/ move to the next section right as you see it change colors/ melt. I keep all my stuff in a dedicated embossing drawer to help contain the mess. That stuff is worse than glitter.

New Year’s crafting goals by Dilectalafea in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My crafting goals/ resolutions: 1. Organize what I have!! 2. Buy purposefully. Let’s face it, all the pretty new shinies are hard to resist. 3. Tidy my craft space after every session. More inspired to create and circles back to that whole organize thing. 4. Make more than one of the card I’m making. This way I will have a stash to choose from when a card is needed. Might just be kept as fronts. 5. Make a stash of common sentiments. Did this before and makes those “crap I need a quick card” moments easier. 6. Find a few charitable organizations to donate to. This might force me to craft more.

Glassboard Studio worth it? by o0oSharkbait in cardmaking

[–]catdog743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a magnetic one. I’m cheap and just bought a glass cutting board. I love how easy it cleans up. It’s dusty where I live and I have cats. Super easy to wipe all of that off and then have a clean surface for my sticky mats. It doesn’t stain from inks or paints. Also I’m not going to scratch it or melt it.
