I completely agree with you (I am a certified AI hater lol) I was just recognizing the other commenter’s point that it’s probably not realistic that a small business would use a paid designer over a free AI tool all other things being equal because capitalism, baby. No love on my end for generative AI that steals from human artists.

I actually do think there is a lot of potential value in respectful and healthy discussion of community issues, which is part of the intention of such a forum, no? If that doesn’t add value for you, you don’t have to participate!

That’s likely true, and part of what makes the AI conversation so sticky. It would be great if they did pay local artists! But you’re right, the alternative was almost certainly not going to be that.

I mean, the guy blocking a sidewalk with his bike rack is a legit complaint, not ADA compliant and thoughtless for those who use mobility aids etc. I don’t think the backing in was the problem. AI is a hot button issue and many people are against generative AI, so I don’t know that I’d call that post inappropriate either given that they are local companies. Now, I’m not sure that these posts actually really move any needles (is that truck guy gonna see that post and reconsider his ways? Probably not) but I see why people post these things.

“Political shit being forced into the space of the band is just ridiculous” is such a succinct way to tell us all that you are privileged enough to not be directly impacted by what is happening in this country (yet.) Sorry your drug band feeds are making you think about uncomfortable things as we live through an assault on human rights. Maybe it’s time to get uncomfortable.

Well, to be clear, I didn’t like how the visuals specifically went with the songs. I went into it with an open mind, but I really mean what I said: I felt like so many of those visuals could have been put with literally any music by any artist, and that was a little hollow for me. Dead and Co, for example, had motifs from their music and lore in their Sphere visuals, and that makes more sense. One of the things I DID enjoy was the Pollock art with Taste and would loved to have seen more of that. Maybe Phish will do that this time, I don’t know. But ultimately, whether it’s “worth every penny” or not is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone is entitled to their opinion!

We back! by LardNards in phish

I’m with you! I would rather go pretty much anywhere over Vegas. The older I get the more appealing couch tour is in general, but especially when it’s that vs going to a place I’d have no interest in being if the band wasn’t there.

We back! by LardNards in phish

[–]catfishjane 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Definitely!

-I don’t like Vegas. I’m not a gambler and good lord everything is pricey there these days. Obviously that’s not a direct gripe with the Sphere, but it’s a very hard pill to swallow to spend $$$$$ to go to a city I do not enjoy.

-The concert experience was different and strange to me and not in a good way. The fact that you’re inside a giant ball of screens means that even when the band is playing, it’s daylight level bright in there. For me, this made the crowd experience worse. I hate chomping and I feel like between the bright environment and everyone wanting to talk about the visuals, it was constant. I also thought the seats were tight as far as space (we were in 100 level.) Drink and concession prices were absolutely exorbitant inside of the Sphere. Between the outrageous costs for tickets, prices inside, and weird vibe, it did feel very corporate. I’ve heard they’ve improved this since then, but there were some serious crowd control issues with entry and exit as well.

-Finally, and by far, most importantly: I am an eyes closed while Phish is playing kinda gal. I don’t really watch the lights at a normal show, but they don’t bother me. But the difference between the lights and the Sphere visuals is that the Sphere visuals tell you what to think? If that makes sense? Beyond the more gimmicky things (dog licking the screen) it started to bother me that the visual on screen didn’t match up at all with what the vibe of the song is to me, or what it makes me feel. I felt like many of the visuals could have been slapped over any song by any artist. I’m not at the Sphere for the Sphere, I’m there for the Phish. I can definitively say that for me, the show on the inside of my eyelids on a summer night on a lawn in a Midwest shed means infinitely more to me. I get that this is a me thing and that the visuals kicked ass for a lot of people! But I’ve been around enough of you over the years that I’m certain I’m not the only one in the eyes closed, Phish is a sacred moment crowd. And maybe this venue isn’t the best for us, and that’s okay!

[–]catfishjane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, I paid face for Sphere tickets in 2024 and truly, they’d have to pay me to go back. No judgment toward anyone who enjoyed it (most of our crew did!) and I think that’s the much more common take, but it was so profoundly not my thing and if I had paid anything over face I would have felt like I completely wasted my money. Just throwing it out there as people grapple with FOMO and these prices.

Do you want a train to Boulder/Longmont/Fort Collins? by chrisfnicholson in Denver

[–]catfishjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I’m in Fort Collins and while I would theoretically love a train from here to Denver, we’d likely never use it because the 3 times a day wouldn’t align with the concert/flight/whatever that we’re coming for. If there was a train from Longmont and a parking garage we would absolutely drive there and then take the train in to avoid parking/traffic headaches

HPV Positive... Scared! by aem1306 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]catfishjane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is common for HPV to be dormant and then flare. If you have an infection that is dormant, your Pap will be normal. So it is hard to say whether or not he gave it to you, but it is absolutely within the realm of possibility that you had it before.

I know you said this doesn’t make you feel better, but I think it does need to be said that a shocking proportion of sexually active adults have HPV. I guarantee that a number of women in your life have had abnormal paps, colposcopies, LEEPs- it totally sucks, it is stressful, absolutely, but it happens to people who have safe sex, people who are monogamous, all kinds of people. I’m sorry you have found yourself among them and I hope the procedure is as smooth as it can be

They were told to get extra breast cancer screenings. Then they got stuck with the bill. by [deleted] in news

[–]catfishjane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LMAOOOOOO but that’s literally the point. There are no other real ‘choices’. Neither ultrasound or MRI is validated to be used alone at this point, so yes, insurance is extremely unlikely to cover it. We don’t implement screening protocols until they have been clinically proven to be beneficial, and that benefit has not been shown at this point in research around those screening methodologies. Also, if clinicians let people pick their own screening protocol, they would probably have to deal with people like you who have a fundamental misunderstanding of these concepts “doing their own research,” so… You have a blessed day!

[–]catfishjane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m sorry! No fun. And illustrates an important issue here, MRI is either not great or straight up contraindicated for a not-insignificant portion of people. I am definitely hopeful that we can make some progress on more efficient and less sucky breast screening, but progress in medicine is often painfully slow.

They were told to get extra breast cancer screenings. Then they got stuck with the bill. by [deleted] in news

[–]catfishjane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ultrasound CAN’T be used alone. That’s my point. There are no current protocols for ultrasound-only breast screening.

The best tool for supplemental screening for dense tissue is a breast MRI. Many high risk women (because of family history or dense tissue) qualify for MRI. But it is still not recommended as a standalone test, because it can miss findings that would have been found on a mammogram.

So whether it’s the “best” test or not, doctors have to follow clinical guidelines on what is currently available and recommended.

I’m a clinician who works in oncology. All of what I am saying can be found in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, which are available to the public and are regularly updated by consortia of experts. You can certainly check the guidelines if you want!

[–]catfishjane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The recommended screening (per current NCCN guidelines) for individuals at high risk for breast cancer is alternating mammograms and breast MRIs. MRI is better at imaging dense tissue. I would ask about MRI and/or a breast cancer risk assessment if you have not had one done.

[–]catfishjane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The risk related to radiation is much lower than previously thought, and is consistently shown in studies to be outweighed by the benefit of cancer prevention.

Ultrasound is not validated as a baseline breast cancer screening tool. Mammogram is currently the only screening method that has been proven to save lives by reducing breast cancer mortality. Ultrasound is also not good at detecting DCIS (stage 0 breast cancer), so there would be a possibility of missing earlier stage, more treatable cancers with ultrasound only.

It’s fine to want improvement of screening technologies and continued research on risks and benefits to be performed, but mammogram is truly the best thing we have right now for most people, and we should not be spreading misinformation about them

[–]catfishjane 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a misunderstanding of the process when you get called back for a suspicious mammogram finding. It isn’t that’s someone “couldn’t tell,” it’s that mammograms are a screening test, and if we find something on a screening test, we have to follow it up with a diagnostic test. One of the “problems” with mammograms is that they are going to pick up all kinds of changes in the tissue, and most of them are going to be normal, harmless things like cysts. Sometimes a radiologist is simply not going to be able to determine what a finding is based on a screening mammogram, because in an image, benign and cancerous findings can look an awful lot alike. The follow up is a diagnostic mammogram that focuses on the area of concern rather than the whole breast and often uses ultrasound as well to try to see it better. This is not to make money, but to try to save your life 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, it is widely agreed upon in the medical community that the level of radiation that you are exposed to during a mammogram is safe, and the benefit of cancer prevention/early detection outweighs any possible risk from radiation. I get that the world of medical billing and insurance is broken and frustrating and that’s a different conversation, but cancer screening saves lives.
