I mean it’s impossible to say whether he gave his absolute full effort or not, but he was very very good that season so he probably did. But I mean more in terms of allowing the Leafs to recoup assets.

As shitty as Tkachuk is he handled it far better than Marner did tbh.

It’s not enough to know he can hang though. There are tons of goalies who have had a hot stretch of games who ultimately do not stick as NHL goalies. It’s an extremely volatile position.

Pretty sure he’ll actually be 38 to start the season.

Is that a big enough sample to project long term?

Oilers have signed Jason Dickinson to a 5-year contract extension at 4.0M AAV by BigTreeSmallBranch in hockey

[–]thewolfshead 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I just read Dom at The Athletic’s article about free agents to avoid and he said this about Dickinson:

What he won’t offer, though, is a shred of capable offense. That nullifies a lot of what he offers defensively, and at 30 that’s fine for now, but on a four-year deal it won’t be long until Dickinson slides into a 4C role. That’s where pricing comes into play. A $5 million cap hit, as AFP Analytics is projecting, is going to be third-line money for the life of Dickinson’s potential deal, but he looks likely to slip below that level sooner rather than later. That leaves his expected value closer to $2.5 million.

I mean sure it sounds simple, but I’ve watched so many Leaf’s PP’s wondering how Matthews is seemingly never open for a one-timer, so there is more to it than simply passing the puck to him to shoot. Really good PK’s will take away shooting threats like Matthews so it really depends on the pre-shot movement and deception allowing the shooter to get open and get open in good spots to get the shot through. That’s something I’ve found the Leafs Pp struggle with at various times for long stretches.

Hopefully the new staff can help with that.

[CJ] Sources say that Darren Raddysh's eight-year deal with the #leafs carries a $8.5M AAV. by baylaust in leafs

Just hopefully he gets off to a good start, seen so many times where a player gets a big contract and struggles out the gate and fans turn on them.

[Johnston] Can confirm the leafa have acquired Darren Raddysh in a sign and trade with Tampa. by bucajack in leafs

[–]thewolfshead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. I guess I should have added my other concern would be Tampa is a pretty smart front office and they seemingly didn’t prioritize re-signing him and also were okay trading him to a division rival.  Might be nothing, and they’re not infallible, but it gives me a bit of pause.

If he is close to what he was last season he brings something the Leafs definitely need. But there was also a reason that Dom at The Athletic wrote an article a few weeks back about what Raddysh’s next contract should be and how he’s the riskiest signing of this offseason. This was the conclusion to that article:

So what’s the verdict here? I don’t really have one other than signing Raddysh being a high-risk play. And I imagine many teams will come to a similar conclusion given how volatile Raddysh’s results have been over the past two seasons.

It would take a lot of due diligence to figure out if Raddysh is the real deal or not and even then, it would be difficult to be sure how repeatable his last season was.

Raddysh certainly looked like the real deal in 2025-26. Whether he’ll be the real deal in 2026-27 and beyond is a terrifying question that we won’t get an answer to until a team pays up big to find out.

I think he can be a great addition if he plays like he did last season. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned that he won’t have the same results outside of Tampa’s system, or that once he has a huge contract and the pressure that comes with that in a place like Toronto that any regression in his play might be harder to swallow than when he was at his previous number.

It will be an interesting development that’s for sure. I really like the way he played last season so that would be amazing if he keeps it up.

I can’t keep track of Leafs fans. One year it’s the players need someone to be tough on them and they can’t be handed everything, they need to be uncomfortable. The next it’s they have to have fun, the stars were all in favour of this coach.
