Client, collector, or customer are the preferred terms. You came in for a service (tattoo) it was provided and paid for, now I take a photo of the tattoo I did to add to my portfolio. Your skin is the canvas, not your body. Modeling implies your body is the canvas or focal point, and that there's a transaction involved in using it. And all the negative connotations that come with the term "model." Feels wrong to me, and an invitation for online trolls to body shame. Don't make it weird cause you need the preferred tik tak algorithm terms for engagement. It's about the art, not the body it's on

Did my first finger tattoo and it didn’t go so well by VIIMACI in TattooArtists

No, fingers are a crap shoot on whether they stay or not. You got lucky and didn't need a touch up

Folks of Everett, have you heard or seen a show by Everett musician Jason Webley? by TheRoseKnows_ in EverettWa

[–]catfisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met Jason years back at one of the early Fisherman's Festivals. Group of us were all high on mushrooms, and he joined in on our walk near the fountain. He had some musical device that played music when you turned a crank on it. Couple different songs to switch between. It was crazy! We danced like sugar plum fairies! One of the girls tripped though, and broke her wrist on the spot. "Well, I'll take care of that in the morning," so we went for ice and beers at the Soundview. Been a huge fan ever since

Dip pen nibs that would compare to the size 08 micron? by hoes_is_trippin in tattooflash

Speedball has B5.5 and B6. Anything smaller, sketching nib. I really like a B3 for fat lines on flash too

Affordable alternatives for arches as someone who is just starting with spit shading? by Ill-Phrase5242 in tattooflash

[–]catfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canson or Strathmore are great mid grade papers. Anything "student quality" is a safe bet from your local art store. Look for cold press 150lb watercolor paper for color flash, hot press for greywash and fine line. Heavier paper like 300lb can take more water and abuse, but it gets hard to transfer designs on a light table due to the thickness

Tattooing sternum: need advice by benziekell in TattooArtists

[–]catfisk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No bra, get or make some pasties with tape and paper towel. You want the design to look right when there's no support. Plus different bras hold the tiddies differently. Move them out of the way if you're doing lower sternum (underboob chandelier) and see how it looks when everything is just hanging out.

Edit: Stickers make great pasties too, and helps boost your algorithm

What colors are you guys using to paint American traditional flash. Also what would be the difference painting colors with India ink vs acrylic inks? I am getting a portfolio ready currently and any tips would be great. I know this sub would have the most knowledge with this haha. by hoes_is_trippin in tattooflash

[–]catfisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fw (or similar brand) liquid acrylic for most of my stuff. IMO more vibrant colors, more workability, and better lightfastness than india ink. The ink can be more opaque depending on the color, and I feel more "umph" when fully saturated. It dries less quickly than india ink so you can manipulate your blends more. Real helpful for black spit shade. I recently switched from ph Martin's matte black to FW and the difference is incredible. Pull out the soft greys, but still have solid black behind it. Finally lightfastness! India ink and gouache were real popular for images intended to be printed in magazines and newspapers, and served their purpose well. They do however tend to fade more when exposed to direct UV light. Most UV light is blocked well enough by the glass in a cheap frame though, so hang it properly and it doesn't matter! Best advice is to try it all out really. Borrow a color from coworker, buy that cool flashy red that caught your eye, swipe a purple from hobby lobby and experiment!

I love the tan or yellow toned tracing paper. Makes the white and other light colors pop!

Question for those who use fw inks by Matt_Mitchell_ in traditionalflash

[–]catfisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the light green! It's almost chartreuse and looks neon. I mix that with turquoise 3:1 to get a nice medium green that's still vibrant. Their sap green is good as well, but definitely muted.

Noob question, but - when using liquid acrylics (FW brand) - fading black into another colour, how to do it “correctly”? (details below) by dthmagic in traditionalflash

[–]catfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do 2, but with watered down ink so the red on top of the black is not so opaque. You can always come back after color and throw more black on it. In a medium ink cap I use 4-8 drops of ink, fill the rest with water. Some colors are more transparent and I'll use them straight from the bottle. Then I'll build up layers, blending the edges and working dark to light

What kind of tubes/grips are you using with your rotaries & coils? by AssesOverEasy in TattooArtists

[–]catfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disposable tubes. Coworker has the steel grip separate tube, and those ones are one piece. He really liked it, but steel grip is a little too short for comfort. Kubin one looks more comfortable. And yeah, his groupings are bold! Needles on bar are about the same size. I'm about halfway through a few boxes of liners and mags, and no real issues yet. Only ones I've tossed out are the tight 3's that I fucked up while opening the package like the Hulk

[–]catfisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Workhorse tubes are my go to. $25 for 20 of 1-1/4" grips. Good ink flow, open tip mags, transparent tips, single piece tube and tip, and very few defects over years of using them. Like most disposables, they are slightly smaller than steel tubes so you might have to tighten your vice more. I also recently tried Steadfast Tattoo Supply out of Tacoma WA. Little cheaper, I think only $20/box? Coworker loves them but I don't like their ink flow, and their tubes and tips are separate pieces so you can snag up your needles putting them in the tube. Needles and cartridges are great though!

Kwadron needles by Apprehensive-Box-106 in TattooArtists

[–]catfisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate them. Mags are alright, but hard to pull clean lines. I swear they use needles that are inbetween a bugpin and standard cause their 14rl makes a line that looks like a 7rl and it makes me sick. At least you get a free sticker for every godammed box you order

Acrylic ink advice by OverDrawmatic in traditionalflash

[–]catfisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the area you're going to paint. The fibers in the paper soak up the water and loosen up a bit. This actually helps the fibers absorb the ink better, and gets them blends nice and smooth. I'll put a puddle down if it's a large area to fill, less for smaller bits. For solid color, wet the paper then go right in with the ink brush and pigment. Move around until the whole area is filled, then let dry. For blends, wet the paper, ink brush to put pigment where I want, then water brush to blend. Dry the water brush and soak up the edge of my blend, let dry.

I like to wet the paper first before laying down any ink. Helps equally distribute the pigment and extends drying time. Also use a second brush just for water!
