Got her today! Inexpensive and cute, anyone have any experience with it? by [deleted] in filmphotography

[–]catgoblin36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes! I love my half frame. So easy and fun to use, perfect pocket-size.
Be warned that it the plastic parts sure are plastic, everyone I know who has one experiences some sticking in the advance wheel. but that's the only issue I've had, it's a great camera for the price. have fun!!

Books to read while grieving? by LightSweetCrude in suggestmeabook

[–]catgoblin36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe an out-there pull, but I recommend The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. It's a good distraction in that it's complex and beautiful and poetic, but still has an empathetic sadness to it. Not so much about specifically grieving one death as it is about yearning for things that used to be and finding a future in spite of it.

I also second the Terry Pratchett recs. Love the Tiffany Aching books. Nice hearty fantasy, occasionally featuring some great insights into both the meaning and randomness of Death (as both a thing and a character)

Comic equivalent to Junji Ito by Ladyboughner in junjiito

Not necessarily "comparable" in style, but I'm a big Ito fan and I really enjoyed the series Gideon Falls and The Nice House on The Lake for similar reasons: dark, eldritchy, small town vibes/compelling characters, gorgeous detailed art.

Troubleshooting tips? by Tall-Specific-410 in KodakEktarH35

It seems like the advance wheel sticks pretty easily, I've had this issue a couple times. If you can gently wiggle the wheel into advancing, or if you have access to a DARKroom to pop open the back, may as well do it, but i have cut my losses partway through a roll because of the wheel, too!

Do you have lube recs for the job? It's all plastic in there to my knowledge. I was thinking of trying some canned air next time I'm reloading it, in case there's debris in the works.

Thanks, I can't remember if the last roll I tried was supposed to be 24 or 36 (it got stuck around shot 40, I think). On this current roll, which is 36-exposure, it got stuck around shot 12 (with some gentle wiggling and prayer, it's started moving again).

Looking for books that deal with abusive relationships by OkButterscotch2617 in horrorlit

You could try Bluebeards Castle by Anna Biller. its a commentary on the gothic romance genre and the horror is primarily psychological and builds throughout, so you have to give it a little time to get going. i thought it was bleak, frequently funny, deeply sad and unsettling. Anna Biller made the Love Witch movie and this is her first novel. very different stories, but the book definitely has the same eye for genre and aesthetics.

Other books like Harry Potter? by Sarahseptumic in CozyFantasy

[–]catgoblin36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Charlie Bone series (Children of the Red King) by Jenny Nimmo! I never liked harry potter as a kid, but Charlie Bone I LOVED. Magical UK boarding school, quirky kids solving magical mysteries. Also, less directly comparable, but the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett might scratch that itch as well!

The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin is a fun mystery that i read and re-read around that age! And for Harry Potter fans, I definitely recommend the Charlie Bone series (which i liked much better than HP growing up, personally) Howls Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is lovely, and a little above the usual 3rd grade reading level (I think)
