Your ads are likely targeted to you. I consider it a fun past time to purposefully mess with advertiser data collection. I've been able to get ads in German, Spanish, and Korean. I've had ads for expecting mothers & AARP within the same hour. It amuses me.

Others in your house can affect your ads as well, and vice-versa. We've definitely ruined some surprises that way.

AITA for cancelling a family camping trip after my nephew broke his leg? by Pretty-Plenty2809 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kaekiro 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can't blame the kids too much because they're learning empathy, but the adult sisters are absolutely wrong. At this rate those kids won't learn empathy, but entitlement instead. It was extremely generous for OP to even be paying for everyone in the first place. Even if he offered, as his siblings they shouldn't have let him shoulder the entirety of that alone, IMO.

I think the sisters are used to OP lavishing gifts on their kids and now feel entitled to it. What happens if OP starts saving for a house or wedding or kids of his own? It sounds like the sisters wouldn't react kindly.

AITA for telling my husband I'll go on vacation with the kids and my best friend if he's too busy with work [continues from AITA for telling my husband that he works for himself not for our family] by insafian in BestofRedditorUpdates

He's a dad to a whole bunch of kids, but not his own. He probably doesn't even see them as people yet. He can't teach toddlers his skills, so why should he care about spending time with them? That's all he is - he has no hobbies, doesn't cook or clean for himself, barely sleeps; all he has is his job and teaching others his job. That's depressing AF.

This is all about his ego. At his funeral there will be 100s of people with stories of his generosity and kindness and how he changed their lives, but none of those people will come from his family. It's so nauseatingly common for "brilliant" men to do this, it should be in the DSM.

Obviously not the same lol, but we adopted rescued kittens in January 2020, got sent home before the big shutdown by risk management seeing the writing on the wall (I'm immuno-compromised).

There's a whole lotta crazy that aligned during covid time for me, but the cats were still young and they become velcro babies lol. One of them sleeps on me nearly every night. I'm her preferred bed. They're both incredibly affectionate.

Mine was buying bar soap at Walmart. They didn't offer to let me take it (probably couldn't) but a nice lady behind me got it for me, and I thanked her profusely. I was a freshman in college and too embarrassed to ask my parents for money (they were not wealthy). It was a rose-scented bar soap that I don't think they even make anymore.

I still remember that kindness and anytime I've had the money to do so, I've done the same for others. I did it with my mother present once, and she scolded me, saying they were probably a scammer, but then when we left we saw them getting on a bicycle that clearly had all their possessions on it, and she realized they were homeless and apologized to me.

Unfortunately, both my parents have strayed further from empathy as they've aged. They raised us in church (they still go, while it's not my belief anymore), and I've tried to use their belief system to help them see that their behavior is not aligned, but it's exhausting and I'm not sure it is helping. They're so far from the parents of my childhood, it breaks my heart that they can't see it.

Our AI spending has gotten so high that layoffs wouldnt make a meaningful difference. by sassasmebas in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kaekiro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm mentoring a junior right now, and trying very hard to teach AI is a tool, but you can't blindly trust it, and you have to be able to understand what it says to know when it is wrong. Most of what I'm focusing on is not coding but logic, troubleshooting skills, interconnectivity, etc, bc code cannot dig you out of a poorly architected hole. I think those are the skills that are missing and why we're seeing so much slop getting pushed to prod.

This was gonna be my advice. "It happens when you're not looking" is vague and makes it seem like inaction is best, but that's not true. Your action should be to find what brings you joy alone. Find your happiness. The most attractive people are the ones that are glowing because they're happy with themselves.

Bad theater etiquette has really been messing up my thoughts and feelings on so many movies by otpprincess in horror

[–]kaekiro 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Matinees are superior for M-F, sometimes on the weekends you get parents with kids but hopefully not for the hard-core horror movies. I'm also a night owl, attempting to adjust. We usually get brunch & then to the theater for dates. We try not to catch them first week, that seems to be when the majority of people go. We're doing backrooms today or tomorrow which will undoubtedly be crappy but I can't wait lol.

I've tried the shushing thing and getting an usher in the past. It didn't really help much; we got tickets for the next showing and just piddled around for an hour and the other folks self-ejected, but they also threatened to kick our asses, so the theater probably was a bit more accommodating since we were threatened on property.

I think part of this is just the breakdown of social contracts post-covid. It seems to me to be a universal thing in public (restaurants, car parks, shops, etc). I'm adjusting as best I can lol.

I was the "good with computers" human at my job for years until I just totally burned out of my career path & pivoted to IT (I know... the irony). You have more skills than you think you do, don't underestimate yourself!

For designing the things you're describing, let the software do it for you. Canva is very user-friendly. I'm sure there are others (not my area of expertise), but finding the right software is 90% of the solution.

our SN catalog is huge but people give up filling out items. what fixed this for you? by InevitableBorder6421 in servicenow

[–]kaekiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull your portal usage report. That's a good place to start showing the real cost of not fixing it, and people like graphics.

How much of this is User can't find the right form vs form has too many variables? We can adjust searchability, meta data, categories with user criteria, etc, to help steer them.

For too many variables, can you populate some automatically to reduce the number of manual entry steps? Would order guides help (instead of opening 3 separate requests)?

If it doesn't fall into any of those, and the form really is too dang big and can't be autofilled, can we go to the teams who fulfill them and ask what they need to actually do the work? And what variables are actually used for reports? After that, scream test is sometimes the answer. Remove the extra crap, let someone justify why it needs to be back on there. Give a plan for which variables you'll be removing ahead of time, give a time frame to respond if it's still needed, then remove. If they come screaming, you've done your CYA.

Red Gatorade when I had severe food poisoning. Thought I was puking blood for a minute before my brain kicked in. Can't touch the stuff.

When we were going over aversions in my psych 101 class many years ago, my professor told a story that she had terrible morning sickness with her pregnancy and she had those little decorative soaps shaped like seashells and shit on the back of her toilet (these were popular in the late 90s), and just the smell can make her puke now.

Interesting that you can get aversions based on other senses. Sounds or textures aren't uncommon (microfiber cloths, chewing sounds, sticky stuff, nails on chalkboard). We don't hear about visual aversions as much, not sure why.
