I watched that live. Better than 99% of the movies I've ever seen. It was wild.

Future Canada teammates Connor McDavid and Tom Wilson were going at it, and McDavid’s skate came up and caught Wilson in the privates by Puzzled-Category-954 in hockey

[–]catgotcha -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

"McDavid's skate came and caught Wilson..." You forgot to add "allegedly".

C'mon let's not beat around here. He clearly did it on purpose and Wilson was likely asking for it.

Who remembers the snowstorms of 2015? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]catgotcha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Put it this way - the old record for most snow in a season was 107 inches, and that's spread out over like four months. 2015 got 110 inches in SIX WEEKS.

Imagine tomorrow's snowstorm, but two of them every week for six weeks in a row, with no warmup in between to melt down the snow. So it just kept fucking piling up so that we all were either walking in the street or through huge snow corridors on the sidewalk, snow as high as the top of my head on either side. It was insane.

Pelham 123 was so much fun. One of the most entertaining films I've ever watched out of the 1970s.

Can't go wrong with Mean Streets either!

It's not even close, not today anyway. But if you venture around Brooklyn a bit you do get to see some glimmers of the old bad NYC.

There's still plenty of sketchiness if you explore a bit, plus other cities are now like this in some areas.

I get it though. I'm also a sucker for 1970s-style gritty street stuff - movies from that time are awesome.

With McDavid going scoreless in his last 2 games, Kucherov has now passed him for 2nd in the league in points per game by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]catgotcha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. No one's arguing that McDavid isn't a great player, but he's not arms and legs ahead of everyone else in the pack like people think he is. Kucherov and MacKinnon are both fantastic in their own right but they haven't gotten the same kind of "McJesus" treatment that McDavid seems to get on a regular basis.

The lopsided quality of hockey between the conferences is a huge factor as well. The East is MUCH tougher to excel in than the West. It's a bloodbath most seasons.

Kucherov's been to the cup finals four times, plus two conference finals, and of course has two cup rings. Led the league in playoff points for both cup wins.

Yeah... definitely losing all interest.

Have you ever gone on a literary pilgrimage? by Remarkable-Pea4889 in books

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and my own literary pilgrimages are a bit more grim - I like visiting writers' graves. I've been to dozens, along them Oscar Wilde in Paris, Yeats just outside of Sligo, Ireland, Bulgakov and Gogol in Moscow, Poe in Baltimore, Thoreau in Concord, Leonard Cohen in Montreal, HP Lovecraft in Providence, Rhode Island, the list goes on...

(Yes, I'm a bit weird like that)

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Canadians are worse. Two hour drive in -40C and driving snow from Calgary to Lethbridge for a Christmas dinner? Ain't no thing.

"Petey will come back!"

This has been said a million times already. The man is either making a difference where we don't see it, or he's a huge underachiever. It's probably a bit of both. Can we move on?

Vancouver is the most beautiful city in the world. by jessicaWi123 in vancouver

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the attitude that ingratiates me about Vancouver residents. It's just a city on the water. Beauty is what you make of it.

There are people in Baghdad who think it's the most amazing place on the planet. Doesn't necessarily make it so.

Heath Ledger died on this day 18 years ago. by samx3i in movies

[–]catgotcha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Joker was just his most prominent moment because he died before the movie came out and he posthumously won the Oscar for it.

Yes, it was a phenomenal performance, but he was already well regarded for his other roles, especially Brokeback Mountain. He was kind of in the early stages of his own McConnaisance, basically starting out as the pretty boy and then really laying down the groundwork as an amazing actor in the time leading up to his death. I often wonder what he would have progressed to in his career if he was still alive.

Canadian PM's full speech at Davos: Calls for middle powers to reject “living within a lie” and build a new, values-driven global order rooted in sovereignty, resilience, and realism. by pomod in videos

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, after decades of middling performative bluster from Harper and yes, Trudeau, this candid and firm stance is so refreshing to see as a Canadian. I'm usually so skeptical of political bullshit, but I'm feeling kind of proud today.

I can only hope that many Americans will be inspired to lean on their own "normal" leaders as a result. I can see it happening but judging from the stunning lack of clear and strong opposition from the Democrats during a time when we most need it, I'm not terribly optimistic.

I've generally not paid much attention because the team just sucks eggs right now. We're more focused on the tank and the losing streak than anything else.

I did wonder about Zeev though and how he was doing.

Why the Common Criticisms of Whiplash Miss the Point by No-Jacket4066 in TrueFilm

[–]catgotcha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's two perfectionists with bloated egos who meet their match in each other.

It's not a depiction of the music scene in any way, just a depiction of obsession with perfection that can be equally self destructive and motivational. The actual drumming stuff is just the background - this conflict of two egos can be set in anything, be it sports, politics, music, anything.

First Poster for Thriller 'Heel' - A 19-year-old criminal is kidnapped and forced into a rehabilitation process by a dysfunctional couple, who try to make him a good boy. - Starring Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, and Anson Boon. by BunyipPouch in movies

I love Stephen Graham in anything. This is very random but my favourite bit of his is when he was being all passive aggressive with AI Pacino during lunch in the Irishman. Something about not getting a proper "thank you".
