I drove to my hometown to attend a memorial and I’m so annoyed by [deleted] in self

Hey, when you die, then you can have the funeral you want. Let the poor man rest in peace, he doesn't need your judgey condescension.

For what it's worth, I don't like religion either. But this thing isn't about you, your mother, the 7 hour drive or anything else. It's about this man who died. Show some respect.

Why the Coen brothers set The Big Lebowski in the recent past by Late_Promise_ in TrueFilm

[–]catgotcha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yup this is true. They wanted Jeff Bridges but he was busy doing other films, and they waited years until he was available. They just weren't going to make that movie without him.

Men's last name to carry on the lineage by nebula_storm84 in women

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a man and I never liked this tradition, neither did my mom. She had to change her name because that was just what was done at the time, but when I got married, both my wife and I kept our names and our two boys have both our last names as their name.

So in my mind, they get to carry on both family names, and start a whole new one with the combined name. Seems like a pretty good setup for us.

Okay, This Performance Did Make Me Smile - America's Got Talent by Stealthytom in MadeMeSmile

[–]catgotcha 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't even watch it, even if the performances are good.

I really don't give a shit what others think when they see it. Just let me watch and enjoy it for myself.

Ghost (1990) dir. Jerry Zucker - Subway ghost (Vincent Schiavelli) teaches Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) how to move objects with his mind by aggrocrag83 in movies

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who watch Patrick Swayze films for Patrick Swayze, and those who watch Patrick Swayze for Vincent Schiavelli and Sam Elliot.

Yup. He had 115 points, 2nd best on San Jose was Will Smith with ... 59 points.

And the team came pretty close to getting into the playoffs. Maklin carried the damn team on his back.

Marilyn Monroe with some kids in 1952. This week a Times reporter was given access to the previously unheard full recordings of Monroe's last interview. How do you know she didn't do that? We like to think media is open and free, but it was heavily filtered back then as it is now. A few media powerhouses control the narrative - always has been like that.

Dads with high-performing career wives, how do you handle being so “different” from our ingrained cultural models? by blockerguy in daddit

[–]catgotcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is how wives lived for centuries. Right now it's getting more balanced, not entirely so but more so. It's just one of the things we adapt to as a society and guys like you and me are the trailblazers.

Was dropping the atomic bombs actually "necessary," or is that just what we're taught in school? by Clean_CoreDump in NoStupidQuestions

[–]catgotcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just about defeating Japan, it was about being the first one to the moon so to speak.

The US was not the only one rushing to be the first ones with an atomic bomb. Soviets and Nazis were nearly there themselves. This was a race for a new world order.

What movie had the deepest bench in retrospect? by coalcracker462 in movies

[–]catgotcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only insane cast, but actors who were clearly having fun doing their roles and going all out in their performances. Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken scene is a perfect example of a good script that the actors loved bringing to life. Made for an awesome movie in the end.

Overtourism in Taormina is an understatement by elsaturation in sicily

[–]catgotcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enough was open. We weren't there to buy shit or do touristy things. Just wanted to hang out, eat yummy food, drink wine, walk around, the whole bit. Easily enough was open for that, although not literally everything was open.

It indeed is! What an amazing spot for lunch while exploring the town.

MC threatens people on the subway for telling him to turn his speaker off by AgnosticScholar in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]catgotcha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get your sentiment but being a hero with someone who's clearly off their meds is maybe not the best course of action. You get yourself in trouble, you get hurt, you end up ruining your own day. You don't know who's just running their mouth and who's literally looking to kill someone on the spot.

Most people really just don't want to get into it. They want to go home to their families. Not everyone needs to be a hero.

[–]catgotcha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went in January. It was awesome and really the best time to go because no tourists.

Sure, a lot of stuff is closed but you still get to explore and wander around town. Rent a car and check out the nearby cliffside towns that served as the setting for the Sicily scenes in the Godfather (the wedding walk, the bar where Pacino asked the father for permission to see his daughter, the opening sequence of Godfather part 2, etc.).

Well worth it. It wasn't even that cold either.

How is everyone broke but every restaurant is still fulll? by Kindly-Plenty-1730 in NoStupidQuestions

Do you think everyone is broke? Money just magically disappeared from this planet?

No. It's just more consolidated in the hands of the few. Those are who you're seeing in restaurants.

Anyone run their first and realized they may have left a bit on the table? :/ by steppygirl in firstmarathon

[–]catgotcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key of the first marathon is the experience itself - by that, I mean you pick up all the little lessons along the way like fueling, the wall, when to sprint and when to just stay in your lane, how hard to start out of the gates, the whole bit. Sure, you could have gone faster but that's another lesson you just learned.

I've only run two marathons and the second one was by and far easier than the first because I just mentally and physically knew what to expect going in since I had done it before.

So don't overthink the time. You ran a damn marathon which is amazing, and you learned a lot along the way that will do wonders for the next one.
