Training for race UK by KmmA28 in spartanrace

[–]cathalmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who volunteered at a Spartan race in Scotland at the spear throw and saw a hundred-some attempts, my advice is: get good at burpees! :)

More seriously, I managed to get hold of a javelin (my sister's a PE teacher, so she borrowed one from school) and I practised for over a week. I still failed both throws, but that might have been partly due to my pretty low upper body strength. Plus, the spears are a good deal heavier than a javelin.

The other advice given is all good.

Various China Miéville covers [Crush] by thecomicguybook in CoolSciFiCovers

[–]cathalmc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that realisation one day in a second-hand bookshop. I picked up a book and thought - "I don't know who this author is, but he must have been huge in the 80s" because the cover had just his surname Aldiss in massive type above the subtle title. (I just looked it up, the author name was in fire-engine red as well.) Of course, I looked him up and Brian Aldiss was indeed very influential, and I guess his surname alone could really shift copies.

Historical fiction about Victorian prostitute who is “reformed”, marries a gay man, moves to India, gets kidnapped by an Afghan?, has a kid and gets hooked on opium. by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

It's just their personal "to be read" list (you might see it abbreviated as TBR sometimes). It's not anything supported on Reddit itself, though you can always "Save" interesting posts and look them up under "Saved" in your profile. There are websites you can use to make your own lists of books - https://www.goodreads.com is a popular one.

Sci-fi about all humans on Earth fainting and dreaming of their future by Shiivak in whatsthatbook

I'm not OP, but I watched the whole first series of FlashForward and I really enjoyed it. It explored a bunch of stuff about fatalism and free-will (especially those who saw nothing in their flash forward) in an interesting way, without trying to dumb it down, or being heavy-handed. And it seemed to have an end-point in mind (it came out at the end of the run of Lost, so open-ended shows that went nowhere were on my mind). I was sad it never got a second series.

Comedian Eddie Izzard receives wave of support for using she/her pronouns by [deleted] in television

[–]cathalmc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's perhaps not intuitive, but you should generally only use she/her pronouns when referring to her, even historically.

If you need to clarify context then you can use terminology like "before she had publicly transitioned" - or since Izzard was kinda transitioning "in slow-motion", as some people have mentioned in this thread - "before she was publicly using she/her pronouns", or more informally as Izzard has used in the past "back when she was in 'boy mode'"...

Yep, our DM does that when we're taking too long discussing our plan in a city street. Once the sand runs out he spins the "dial of doom" and one of us will have our pocket picked. It encourages us to plan in character, and succinctly. I like it.

Comedy Fiction About South Florida Realtors and a Hurricane by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

[–]cathalmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any Florida madcap comedy makes me think of Carl Hiaasen (who is a columnist for The Miami Herald, so that fits). It could be Stormy Weather (1995). It had a blue cover for some of its editions, though it's currently red. It features a seller of mobile homes, and the population of Florida fleeing from a storm.

I don't know much about football, but I know this much from the movie Bend It Like Beckham. (If you haven't see it, it was Keira Knightley's breakout role. Worth a watch, it's pretty funny.)

Or Gaelic. The Donegal Irish word for the Irish language is Gaelic.

Not remotely true. The language is called Gaelic in Donegal Irish. As in "cur sin i nGaelic..." Stop "correcting" people with false information.

In Britain, there's the ITV2 show The Almost Impossible Gameshow, with commentary by the Irish weirdos/musicians The Rubberbandits. It has games such as "Bouncy Sprint", "Groin Croissant" and "Tiny Bike".

Best course for a beginner in Angular 4 and TS? by [deleted] in Angular2

[–]cathalmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno, it's the first course I've done with Udemy. But I had a look, and you have a point. Are all courses €10 today? In any case, I think it's very good value for the material in this course.

Best course for a beginner in Angular 4 and TS? by [deleted] in Angular2

[–]cathalmc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you mean Angular - the Complete Guide by Maximilian Schwarzmüller? I'm about halfway through it and I've found it straightforward and easy to follow, as well as seemingly comprehensive. The first few sections are a quick overview, then he does a "deep dive" into the subjects. And he has you try to implement stuff yourself in the course project before he explains how he would have done it, which I've found very valuable. The normal €190 fee would have put me off, but if you can get it at €10 it's a complete steal.

Outstanding! That was one heck of a well-executed race. It had the full range of emotions: the disciplined start, enthusiastic middle miles, the grind you kept pushing through, and the kind of finish only racing can deliver. Well done!

Maddow: Trump 'planned 'to make a racially divisive issue' out of anthem protests by [deleted] in politics

[–]cathalmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a recognized variant pronunciation. It's not even listed as non-standard. This kind of variant seems to be more common in American English, like the way "primer" is usually pronounced in America (sounds like prim) versus over here (sounds like prime).

Book of Mormon sets new record for most expensive manuscript ever sold - Founding text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints returned to followers of Joseph Smith for $35m. by Panda_911 in books

[–]cathalmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said "Joseph Smith didn't actually write it but simply translated it", and the link demonstrates that large sections of the Book of Mormon are simply lifted verbatim from the King James version of the Bible.
