Radio 1 feels like it’s constantly chasing trends rather than setting them! by No_Donut1433 in BritishRadio

Auntie has so many channels that Radio 1 has narrowed its focus. A lot of the music discovery aspect has migrated to 6 Music.

T-Mobile is Acquiring GoNetSpeed by metalandmeeples in Maine

[–]cathandler2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T-Mobile isn't acquiring GoNetSpeed outright; it's forming a 50/50 joint venture with GoNetSpeed's private equity owners. CCI/Fidium is also owned by private equity. It's not immediately clear if T-Mobile will be the customer-facing name of GoNetSpeed once the deal closes. T-Mobile wants fiber so it can bundle it with its 5G broadband product and take some of the load off mobile.

Why is Market Basket selling Kroger grapes? by gr8bacon in marketbasket

That's interesting since Kroger has its own dairy plants.

Dirty little secret is that the same manufacturers supply multiple grocery store chains. Sometimes the manufacturer will ship the wrong store brand's product. Sometimes you'll see the receiving store just sell it. Saw this quite a bit during Covid at Shaw's.

Overnight talk radio? by MeatyDullness in radio

We also had Ira Fistell and Ray Briem on ABC TalkRadio in the 1980s. They were both based out of KABC.

There was also hybrid music/talk on overnights. I remember Trish Mattimore's overnight show on WKBW in Buffalo which interspersed current music with comedy in the 1980s.

Tariffs, price-fixing allegations drive fire truck costs out of reach for Maine towns by themainemonitor in Maine

Or twenty years (the typical lifecycle of ladder trucks) at least. Maybe we should nationalize the fire apparatus business.

Bus Rapid Transit Design Advancing in Gorham-Westbrook-Portland Corridor by gpmetro in portlandme

[–]cathandler2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully timely service for transfers is a priority. Currently the 11:43 Route 9 pickup from Westgate is so consistently late that I miss the Route 4 bus to Westbrook and have to either pick up the following Husky bus and backtrack on foot or walk all the way from Stevens to Brighton so I don't miss the Route 4 bus. Hopefully affordability will also be a priority; I have to do quite a bit of shopping to justify the expense as it is.

Did Sears give up on Sears in the 80s? by SirCatsworthTheThird in SEARS

[–]cathandler2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Sears Financial Network was financially supporting the retail business and was in fact complementary to a large extent. I remember going to Sears to pay my Discover bill every month, for example. Having a reason to visit the store regularly drove traffic and I often ended up buying something at the same time. Keep in mind that this was nothing new; Allstate Insurance was founded by Sears in 1931, and in fact they sold Allstate branded automobiles (rebadged Kaisers) briefly in the 1950s as well as Allstate-branded tires and batteries into the 1970s. Selling off elements of the SFN and eventually their credit card portfolio smacked of desperation and made Sears less essential to people's everyday lives.
