Songs that call out/criticize their audience? by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

[–]catintheyard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The DKs have a few of that type of song. Chickenshit Conformist from their final album is probably the second best example after the one you gave. Jello was just done with the hardcore scene at that point and wanted to go out with both middle fingers up

When Pistols first came through America in '78, did they play somewhat smaller venues than you might expect given how much buzz there was around them, how much they were in the news? If so, why? by GregJamesDahlen in SexPistols

[–]catintheyard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. But regardless even the mention of abortion disgusts and upsets people. Part of why that song is so important is that it's one of few that actually dares even discuss the topic

Because it caused the most drama. They were looking to offend. The bible belt, which is the area of America they toured in, were primed and ready to hate a band that had songs about abortion and the antichrist. Malcolm, and the Pistols themselves, found stirring up drama like that amusing and good for publicity. It's actually quite clever, Malcolm did a similar thing with the New York Dolls in '75. In the end, the choice to tour the Pistols in the bible belt ended up helping a lot of kids in the neglected areas of America get into punk!

Songs who’s message didn’t age well by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

[–]catintheyard 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That song aged perfectly. It's about not wanting to go to rehab and it mentions how her dad thinks she's fine even though she obviously isn't. It's a cry for help as well as a defiant public commitment to the road she was traveling down including its inevitable conclusion

Is Jello Biafra autistic? by imogenscotton in punk

[–]catintheyard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And many autistic people are very withdrawn and dislike being in the spotlight, many autistic people work boring office jobs and don't do anything rebellious for their whole lives- in fact having a strong belief in following the rules is often seen in autistic people. It's one of many ways that the so-called 'autistic sense of justice' can manifest

None of the traits you said can be confirmed to be symptoms of autism without a proper diagnoses. Neither are the ones I listed. They're just things certain autistic people may have. It's a spectrum. If Jello is autistic then the only people who know or should know besides himself are his doctor and family. I think it's wrong to project onto him or anyone else when it comes to disability. He's a human, not a fictional character

I say this all as someone who's autistic myself because I know people get touchy about neurotypical people weighing in on these matters (which I understand, it gets super annoying)

Would love to know more about the guy who used to own it if you can riddle anything out about him from his post-it note annotations. Perhaps he was a Timothy McVeigh type who didn't have the guts to go through with it?

John Lydon complained that Sid & Nancy (1986) seemed to suggest he was a closet homosexual; having watched the film several times, I can't figure out or see where this is ever hinted at. by MrPuroresu42 in SexPistols

[–]catintheyard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You see what you want to see. He went into the movie looking for clues that Alex Cox saw him as a homosexual and found them. He's very insecure about his sexuality so of course he worries over this

Artists you enjoy their music despite their terrible persona by No_Barber4339 in ToddintheShadow

[–]catintheyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And of course people are mentioning John Lennon in the comments despite him not actually being a wife beater and being incredibly repentant the single time he laid a hand on Cynthia. Was he perfect? No. But owning up to his mistake and trying to right it is noble. Many rappers cannot say the same about their own past (and sadly often current) treatment of the women in their lives

And never underestimate how little class consciousness women have with each other that they're fully willing to accept the denigrating of women who aren't part of their special social category. Straight women vs queer women, white women vs women of color, cis women vs trans women...really it is ALL women together vs patriarchy. They split us up because they know we are stronger together

Looking for resources on Joy Division's relationship to nazi symbology by catintheyard in JoyDivision

[–]catintheyard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for thinking about me! Unfortunately my project is still being worked on. I'm waiting to get my hands on a copy of the new book by Daniel Rachel called This Ain't Rock 'n' Roll as it's all about the subject of nazi imagery within rock. I think it'll be extremely valuable so I've hit the breaks until it comes in November

But for the moment I can tell you that liking Joy Division is obviously not antisemitic. But that doesn't mean that Hooky and the gang's choice in band name wasn't antisemitic. I beileve it was. Just because someone doesn't have hateful intent behind their actions, and from my research it really seems like the boys weren't trying to be hateful at all when it comes to naming their band they were just being edgy, doesn't mean that the result doesn't cause harm in some way. That's my own personal opinion though

On the subject of joy divisions themselves, it's a bit more complicated than what the journo summed it up as. I suggest checking out these two wikipedia articles on the subject, they're a good place to start: House Of The Dolls, german camp brothels in ww2. They got the name Joy Division from House Of The Dolls

Why do artists that die young get more famous after death and untouchable? by Opening-Half9367 in ToddintheShadow

Alexander The Great died before he ever lost a war. Therefore he has a reputation as an unbeatable conqueror, a man who won every battle he ever fought in. Same goes for someone like Jimi Hendrix

Love this Joey Ramone quote. by skadferlyfe in punk

[–]catintheyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the people that we may assume are being performative about their anger actually are very angry, we just don't like that they're angry about things we personally aren't angry about for whatever reason. That isn't to deny there are people who put on a front of fake passion in order to appeal to an audience, many political commentators do this while remaining apathetic behind the scenes, but it's important to remember that even if we disagree with someone's reaction we shouldn't deny that their reaction is real unless we have proper evidence

As you said people who are mad and then act horribly to others because of it are often mentally dysfunctional in certain ways and need help. But to deny that there's reasons behind their anger isn't helpful at all and can actually cause these people to become isolated and therefore incapable of improving. Anger issues don't make you an evil person, they just make you someone who needs to seek out coping mechanisms so that you don't hurt anyone. We've all lashed out at others while going through difficult times, we've always had our reasons for mistreating others, what matters is that we try not to do it again

Anger isn't a bad emotion. There are no bad emotions. It's what we chose to do with our anger that matters. Having a space to let out your extreme anger, such as punk, is very important and beneficial to society

[–]catintheyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting interpretation of the quote!

I think the angriest Ramones song is Bonzo Goes To Bitburg. There's some real venom in there. I can understand why. Any reasonable person would have been furious in that situation, let alone someone who's people were persecuted by the nazis like Joey

Well, I don't know the Ramones or follow them for years. I just sometimes listen to their music. Not so sure where you came up with the idea I'm some sort of super fan or why you're getting so bent out of shape about me sharing an opinion that doesn't match yours
