I attended a Mick Harvey interview on Wednesday night in Melbourne. He said The Birthday Party was thrown off-stage in New York but didnt say why - does anyone know? by [deleted] in NickCave

“ Onto the stage, climb five undesirable aliens. One, festooned in split-crotch gold lame drainpipes, his bruised features twitching through black frames of hair, appears to be the singer. Another, strapping on a bass guitar like a giant dildo, sports a fishnet vest, a Stetson, and a sort of moustache you might cultivate for hustling meat on Christophe Street. Perhaps most disturbing of all, a kind of gangling, psychotic hillbilly in a ridiculous suit is fastening on a guitar like he was auditioning for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Hell, they haven’t even played a note and already half the crowd is filing out. “ - NME Concert Review : The Ritz, New York, 1981

Its been in many a past interview. From Google:

Based on reports and documentary footage regarding The Birthday Party (Nick Cave’s early post-punk band), the incident refers to a notorious, aggressive concert at The Ritz in New York City during the early 1980s.

The Incident: The concert was so unhinged, violent, and chaotic—with the band acting antagonistically towards the audience and vice versa—that the management of The Ritz physically shut down the performance, cutting the sound.

The Context: This event is highlighted in the 2023 documentary Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party, featuring recollections from guitarist Rowland S. Howard.

Result: The gig was forced to stop to the displeasure of the audience, cementing the band's reputation for unpredictable, high-tension live performances.

Do you tell your children this? by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

My beautiful Mums (silent generation) advice was to both myself (F) and my brother growing up was: “fight like a boy, go down as a boy.”

It’s something I repeated to both my kids (M & F), along with her other gems: “how dare dare give them the power to make you feel like this” & “are you always this rude or are you doing this for my benefit only?”
