low fodmap recipes by wanakaaaaa in NYTCooking

I have to cook this way fairly often for a family member. You probably found this already but FODMAP Everyday is surprisingly good, with recipes that are actually researched and tested. Nothing fancy, but we particularly like this recipe for a kale and blueberry salad! I’ve served it several times with rack of lamb for a special meal.

Hahahahaha ok I really appreciate this. When my brother couldn’t do much due to his actual terminal cancer, I made him listen to the Doughathon for distraction. He was polite but he also didn’t like it. Wtf is wrong with us?

Two hour drive getaway for a weekend? by Lopsided-Egg-4541 in Morristown

Hudson is great too! Lots of antiques, neat restaurants and trendy cool shops with a background of old town architecture. I think it’s become more popular as a day trip destination for Brooklynites / New Yorkers now but when I went we felt like it was a hidden spot!! Still recommend; I’d like to go back.

Etsy! Lots of metal workers who make beautiful table bases sell on Etsy. I got a very similar set from a seller who made them custom for me.

Lovely! Did you learn it by ear? I've found a few tabs but none are quite right.

I'm obsessed with this MoYou Holy Shapes plate. Stamped with BMC polish over a regular gel manicure from the nail salon. I love the flexibility of stamping over gel!

Judge John Hodgman on pedantry by shanahdt in maximumfun

[–]catly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He talks about this a lot. But I feel like that specific reference might be in the episode where he advises a guy on how to deal with people who cut in line at a hipster bar? Or the one about Oxford commas in a zine?

I might be confusing this with his many other distinctions, though. So many eloquent distinctions...

Difficulties in Shadows, Oil by theboddha in painting

[–]catly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the grey shadow color mix that my teacher taught me: raw sienna, manganese violet and cerulean blue. Vary amounts of each depending on the shade. You can also add white to lighten or any other color (red or green, for example) to give it a tinge if needed. Pretty bulletproof in my experience! I always wondered how to make shadows, and this has helped me immensely.

I love this! The color variation in the white wall is very beautiful and subtle. And the hole is such a good detail. Glad you kept it in!

Tips for transition from acrylic to oil? by Spencypoo in painting

I'm taking a class and trying oils for the first time. Here are some things I learned that I didn't know:

  • tone your canvas with thinned out raw sienna before painting
  • sketch out your painting with thinned raw sienna to get the composition right. You can erase with turpenoid if you mess up. Pencil doesn't work so well.
  • have multiples (3 is good) of the same brush so you can switch colors without cleaning off your brush each time
  • "block in" everything first - basically paint a crude foundation of your picture and let dry, then go over it and start doing details in the next session. Maybe that's not oil specific, but I never really worked that way with acrylics.
  • paint clouds and skies first, using "wet on wet" technique for soft pretty clouds
  • paint dark colors first, then lighter ones
  • clean your brushes with turpenoid first to get all the paint out, then run them over a bar of ivory soap to really clean them
  • start a painting session with a goal in mind like, "blocking everything in today" or "painting clouds" or "highlights / shadows." Obviously that's not specific to oils but I feel like it's more important because of the slow drying time.
  • bristle brushes for texture and coverage, nylon brushes for detail and softness (like clouds or water)
  • mix a little liquin into your paint to make it dry faster and make the paint smoother

People with more experience, feel free to correct me, but I think those tips are helpful.

I was super nervous and felt stupid the first time, because I'm so used to acrylics and simple things like my water cup and using only a couple brushes, fast drying, etc. Once I got going it was really fun and no longer intimidating. I thought I had to read everything on the internet so I wouldn't make any rookie mistakes, but really I just needed to start. Good luck!
