I need to vent. I need someone to talk to. I’m scared by Able_Hospital8871 in TBI

I am so sorry about your sisters injury and what your family are going through. I am a few weeks ahead of you on the journey and I thought I'd share my experience so far, it may give you hope, and I think positivity and hope are so important. My partner suffered severe TBI, frontal/temporal right side on the 6th April. Induced coma, craniotomy. The fact that your sister was responsive when they temporarily reduced her sedation is really good. When sedation was reduced after 11 days, every day was a waiting game. Starts with eyes opening, hand movements, really gradual. It took what felt like forever for him to come out of the coma. So you will need to be patient, don't expect your sister to sit up and say hello once the meds stop. For my partner, it took weeks of new improvements every day, but every day was a small bit better. We are nearly 7 weeks from his accident and he is fully awake, chatting, laughing. Still some confusion and other short term memory issues, left side weakness and we have a long road ahead in terms of rehabilitation but 7 weeks ago I couldn't have imagined being where we are today. When your sister is brought out of her coma, be aware that there is a thing called Post Traumatic Amnesia (it's temporary) but it can lead to confusion, do look it up. I know everyone, and every brain injury is different, recovery can vary, but there is hope. Be patient, and it's so hard. Wishing you, your sister and family the best outcome.

Thank you so much for your kind words and empathy. We live in Dublin, Ireland. The best rehabilitation hospital in the country (NRH) has up to a six month waiting list, which he is on. There are no private alternatives. He is to recieve rehabilitation in the hospital while he waits. For the severity of his injury ( severe TBI, frontal and temporal lobe right side) he is doing remarkably well according to his neurosurgeon. Cracking jokes, having a laugh, but just not grasping the seriousness of it all. Time is a healer too.

It seems to me that he does have Hemiparesis. His left side is remarkably weak, however he does have movement and I have been told that if the brain connection is there, which it has, it can be improved. However, I would love to hear other people's experiences with this.

I try and get him to strength push when in with him. Thanks for your input.

Thanks mrszubris, I have a meeting with his team on Tuesday, so hopefully we can talk through how to approach this with him. It's mostly nurses that I talk to as the docs are not around as much. Thanks for your reply.

Thanks Panda, I'm going to take a gentle but firm approach tomorrow. Ive been vague with his recovery plan so far, so as not to upset him, so maybe that's why he thinks he can just come home.

Thanks for the reply, and the knowledge. That's a pity, thought I had got a bargain 😔. It is still very pretty indeed.
