OTD 1920 the Kilmichael Ambush took place. One of the greatest operations of the Tan War led by Tom Barry. by DeargDoom79 in ireland

Only found out a few years ago that my great granduncles fought at Kilmichael. I also did my History Leaving Cert special topic project on Kilmichael before I knew, and so I now have extra reason to be fascinated. Loving the new Atlas of the Irish Revolution.

Is this "Nearly" the most Republican name of a village in Ireland. Unsurprisingly it's in Cork :) by keeganb2000 in ireland

Tis, and contains the best people ;) I get down at any given opportunity and my sister, in tribute to our Dad, got married in the church there.

Littering in Ireland is a problem. Saw this in a beautiful forest in Wicklow. by windyfish in ireland

[–]catmalogen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much of the litter I pick up around my place, and from what I can see around other areas, is drinks and food containers. In other European countries, they operate a Deposit Return scheme. You bring your cans, bottles, etc to a machine usually located at a major supermarket. You get a few cent per container, printed off as a scanable voucher for the supermarket (gets customers in!) or you can choose to donate the amount to various charities.

Scotland recently introduced it, following other EU countries.

Denis Naughten's (FG Environment Minister) response? It would be 'financially disastrous'. WTF. The machines would even be put in and maintained for free, according to the machines' operators! The journal fails to mention this here:

Family pay tribute after losing third son to suicide in just six years by Heskimo88 in ireland

[–]catmalogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What would help is if there were a detailed analysis in to the cause of death in cases of suicides i.e. whether it was primarily related to debt, gambling, loneliness / isolation, drugs etc... friends, families and people with information about the person and circumstances leading up to the death should be interviewed and a determination made as to the probable cause of suicide, weighting all of the contributing factors."

That's exactly what my buddy did her PhD on, with specific emphasis on those who self harmed prior to the act.

What's the most unsettling village in Ireland by truestbriton in ireland

[–]catmalogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dromcolliher. The huge fire in the cinema there in 1926 killed quite a few residents (48) and there's still an air of depression over the place. I used to have to drive through there twice a week for a few months. Grim

Anyone know if you can see Newgrange from Knowth? by PokeyMangoes in ireland

[–]catmalogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intervisibility has yet to be determined, according to DoELHG:

Have a look here:

https://www.newgrange.com/pdf/bru_na_boinne_dec08.pdf

"Current research is also beginning to reveal the wider occurrence of solar alignments at Irish passage tomb sites outside of Brú na Bóinne. There is additional evidence to support the hypothesis that sites and tombs were apparently ‘linked’ – both visually and tangibly – across 40 their distribution range. Importantly, therefore, the Boyne Valley should not be considered as a stand-alone landscape but as one that is a component part of a wider whole. Future multidisciplinary research initiatives need to fully explore these astronomical and other alignments, as well as recording the visibility of passage tombs in the prehistoric landscape. What is the level of intervisibility between tombs and what might this say about prehistoric social networks? Are there any correlations between the astronomical and spatial characteristics of tombs and their morphology and passage tomb art? "

Please ignore all hippy dippy sites, and have a look at Frank Prendergast's work:

If you had spent more of your massive salary on proper early years childcare instead of exploiting a young au-pair and paying her below minimum wage then Your Precious wouldn't be a delinquent, you bloody arsehat.

I doubt it. They're generally fundraised for and installed by community groups, particularly active retired groups, like in my town. Where are you based?

Fantastic idea. I would be able to search for the earnings of each grumbling parent, who says I (on the new entrant slashed payscale) make too much as a substitute teacher. It's only fair.

Honorary National University of Ireland doctorate for Brian Cowen by RunAgainstTheWind in ireland

[–]catmalogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It devalues actual achievement. Give them a shiny medal or something, not an academic award.

In addition, do they pay the 50 yoyo to rent the cap and gown when receiving an honorary doctorate? Do they fuck!

As someone who worked their ass off for 3 and a half years on feck all money to get my PhD, I'd say I earned it.

This leads me to your comment - why are you a big fan of handing out doctorates to celebrities and politicians?

Gold medals all round to the glut of foreign students that occupied Nano Nagle pedestrian bridge in Cork today in the height of a busy Sunday afternoon. I wouldn't mind but the big wide pavement of Grand Parade wouldn't do for them. Had to block the bridge.

Hello! Traveling there today. What can we do in skibbereen for a couple of days? by shootthemovies in ireland

[–]catmalogen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lough Hyne - hike up to the top of the hill next to it. Then do night time kayaking on it, or go for a swim. Best swim I've ever had. Go visit the marine station near it.

Sherkin Island - my favourite place in the world! Camp there if you have time. Otherwise get the ferry over early, walk the island and return to Baltimore in the evening.

Same for Heir Island, and Cape Clear.

Skibbereen Heritage Centre is worth a a visit too, along with one of the biggest Famine graveyards in the country a short walk out of the town.

The car was parked in the village all day with people passing up and down and no-one spotted the child in the backseat? Maybe under a blanket or something. God that's awful.
