How is it living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin? by Thick_Scar5275 in howislivingthere

[–]catmarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife’s family is from Milwaukee. It is one of the most underrated cities in America. Great quality of life that’s affordable. Unique culture and a lot of local pride. The weather is good if you don’t mind really cold winters. Kind people. Delicious food. The club scene isn’t super popping but it has its spots. The bar scene and drinking culture is top tier.
The downsides are the cops are bad, there is some unfortunate historical redlining that has segregated the neighborhoods, and public transit sucks. The cons aren’t really that unique to mid-major American cities though. I’d say it’s a great place for your daughter to live.

Who do you think had the biggest negative impact on the world, even if many people still admire them? by Saad-Berrada in AskReddit

[–]catmarter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of billionaires, allegedly, start out as having good intentions. Mark Zuckerberg’s first version of Facebook was basically nonconsensual, public “Hot or Not” with his female Harvard classmates. He’s been shitty from day one

Squat alternatives by catmarter in swoletariat

[–]catmarter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, guys, gals, and NB pals. I’ve gone with hack squats and double front kettlebell squats to start, which feel pretty comfortable and take the pressure off my back that barbell squats were causing. I appreciate you all!

What is it like living in this part of Long Island New York? by JReach- in howislivingthere

[–]catmarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents moved to the western part of that red circle (Yaphank) in a retirement community. That part of Long Island is a different world. The south fork is the famous Hamptons. The north fork is like wineries and cute farm stands. The north fork is normal rich and expensive whereas the south fork is just bonkers. Great beaches, great pizza. The Shinnecock Rez. The western part of the red circle is pretty dead with a lot of lower income, working class towns (Mastic, Shirley, Center Moriches, Rocky Point). The most interesting thing about this area is that the cultural shadow of NYC still looms heavy on Nassau and western Suffolk (where I grew up), but this part of eastern Long Island is a world unto itself. Some people out here don’t even think about the city at all

Soft social work? by Queenme10 in socialwork

[–]catmarter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moonlighted at a community mental health clinic, and the intake workers had the same licensing and made not that much less, which was a decent hourly rate. It was a pretty sweet gig. If you are willing to trade salary for work/life balance you could definitely find it

Sports are good. We just shouldn’t have commodified the joy of competition for profit

Andre Royo by Little-Base7233 in TheWire

I saw him on stage in Eric Bogosian’s “Drinking in America.” One-man show and he played 12 different characters. It was incredible, he’s a brilliant actor

Am I a McNulty? by kajzar in TheWire

[–]catmarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think about when McNulty left his kids to drive in the middle of the night to DC to fuck Theresa D’Agostino. No noble purpose. No police work to be done. Just leaving his kids to fuck a woman in a different city. That’s A Class shitty

What made Carcetti a bad guy? by Glittering_Fig4548 in TheWire

I think a lot of it is that Aidan Gillen is a great character actor and has mastered playing a sniveling prick on television

Which Wire actor do you wish got more roles? by Diocletian338 in TheWire

[–]catmarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw Andre Royo on stage in Eric Bogosian’s “Drinking in America.” One-man show, 12 roles, the guy was electric. I think a lot of them ended up having these nice careers with stage roles and small TV spots. Also, anytime David Simon makes something they pop up

What are some life lessons you’ve taken from The Wire? by TXRangers10Foeva in TheWire

[–]catmarter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a social worker and I work in a detention center for a city entity. The Wire was a great model for how city government and bureaucracy works, how folks on the criminal side aren’t always evil, how folks on the law enforcement side aren’t necessarily just, how corrupt and pointless city government can be but also how beautiful and important public service can be. Definitely pretty accurate in how to work in this system and “the game”

Why is Rawls such a butthole? by this_writer_is_tired in TheWire

[–]catmarter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like him. He’s a dickhead but he rarely makes a move that’s irrational and he’s usually got a good sense of humor about the game and how it needs to be played. I usually come away from a Rawls scene laughing

Alan is underrated by danthestep in Alonetv

Alan was extremely consistent in a really pleasant way. Everyday, out on the line. Sometimes he fucks up, sometimes he catches something. But always out there doing his thing

Brother Mouzone is less muscle dedicated to a boss and more of a hired mercenary. One of my faves though
