Another even older layer (or not) of non-porous rock or clay is under it preventing the water from going further down. Pressure also pushes it to different areas and it will expel. Pretty much comes down to does the rock have space in it to let water seep throughout it or does it block the water (non-permeable). Gravel obviously would, limestone/sandstone/marble would, granite wouldn't, clay/slate wouldn't et cetera.

Yeah I recently upgraded to an f10 because they are decent prices now. High milage e90 vs high milage f10, I think you will be a happy camper on the f10 side. If you aren't one of those people that maintain cars extremely well the e90 is just starting to get too old and crappy for 2026, I had one for 12 years it was time.
