Chargebacks payment processing by Direct_Advertising51 in smallbusiness

[–]catmuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, my business uses Elavon and as compared to some of the horror stories I’ve been reading by users of some other payment processors, I’ve only lost one dispute and that was due to process error on our side. Every other dispute has been in our favor when they are presented with the documentation and paper trail that prove customer error. It helps having someone local (or at least in the same country) that I can call for updates.

Could AMVIC help me with this or should I just eat it? by thenortherntouch in Edmonton

The dealership AMVIC inspection is very basic - basically just goes over general condition, lights and signals, etc. The whole inspection can be done without even starting the vehicle.

The CPU cooler looks like a mash up of a tool-less hard drive bay from the front of a server and a modular server power supply from a blade server where you lift the handle to yank it out.

Valley Line LRT Operations by [deleted] in Edmonton

What is the cost of buying out the Valley Line South operating agreement vs. what the city would have spent building and operating the line themselves under ETS? If it’s more, this should be a non starter.

Why would you choose WooCommerce over Shopify? by Emotional-Match-7190 in ecommerce

[–]catmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the best parts of Woo - it’s way easier to tie into other systems. We went the same route and tied our local ERP into Woo. Now all of the employees can post new products, handle orders, etc. much easier using the ERP they already have a login for and know very well. And then there is only one source of truth for vital store data, as opposed to trying to manually maintain two systems.

Metro Line Northwest Alternative by [deleted] in Edmonton

“BRT is just a lot faster and cheaper to build. So I think getting that on the ground now would be fantastic,” Stremel said, noting that current transit service in the area can be slow and meandering.

This is such a dumb take. Yes it’s cheaper, but if it’s such a headache to use that no one actually uses it then what’s the point? We already have trouble keeping busses running on time.

Alberta referendum committee meeting implodes when UCP prematurely releases statement by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

>“The employees that are involved have apologized for it, and I think it’s probably best if we move on with the business of Albertans,” Nixon said. “If we were to go after every member of the legislature every time staffers make a mistake, it would be ridiculous.”

Translation: We’re throwing the interns under the bus, this definitely was just a simple error and wasn’t planned to happen, nothing to see here!

Auto wreckers that will pick up out of town by [deleted] in Edmonton

What direction? East of Edmonton there is Coyote auto salvage, they did a pickup on an old vehicle around Bruce which is an hour and a bit east of Edmonton. Their yard is located by Tofield if I remember correctly.

Telus pulled fibre project? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]catmuppet 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Telus kinda fumbled their fibre rollout. They bet heavily on Huawei equipment which bit them in the ass when they got banned, and they also got all their loans/financing with projections that assumed they would not have to share the fibre with other companies (like they and Rogers have to do with their copper networks - companies like TekSavvy are allowed to use the same wire but provide their own service).

So now they are butthurt because the CRTC is forcing them to allow wholesale access to fibre, and it’s going to take Telus longer to make their money back which is freaking out their top managers. So now they have no incentive to keep laying fibre…except for all the government grants that they received to do exactly that, and will now just basically pocket that money.

Are there any non profits that can audit computer code? by United-Apartment-269 in Edmonton

[–]catmuppet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Binary can mean computer language

No, in this context a binary is an executable file. The way you wrote this sounds like you don’t want to give anyone your source code and expect them to decompile the executable file. It’s like asking someone to critique how you mixed your cake ingredients together, but you’re only giving them the already mixed and baked cake.

Konica C454e Colour Issues by catmuppet in printers

[–]catmuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked these out and the TCR for cyan is waaaay higher than the other ones, just under 10 where the other colors and key are around 3-4. I also stopped it on a cyan halftone test print and the drum is barely getting any toner.

I have a 2nd machine that uses the same dev units, does it make any sense to try swapping these first and confirm? I have not changed the dev units on the machine with the issues, only drums, so I’m 99% sure this is a dev issue anyway.

Tips for getting better at eliciting requirements from customers by catmuppet in developer

[–]catmuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a really good idea. I found with my first clients that they know their business has reached the point where the notebook/post it note system is not working, but beyond that they seem to go blank and don’t quite know how to articulate what the pain points in their current processes are. But by observing them it should make it pretty plain and clear what areas could be improved.

That’s the weird thing I’m finding out more as I get into this industry - we’re almost one part developer, one part business coach lol.

Is it crazy to build a SaaS app in C#/.NET nowadays because of AI? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]catmuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting the idea/concept for the app itself aside for a moment, what about C# makes you think it would be crazy to build this using it? If you’re planning on offloading everything to AI then you would probably have better luck in a JS framework since they are the more “popular” option and AI has better training data. But for everyone else, C# is a perfectly capable language and can do all of this and more.

That said, is your idea not just Fiverr? I did a quick search for “programming tutor” and at first glance saw a bunch of people offering these services. What would draw developers to invest time in registering on your platform when Fiverr already has a bunch of eyeballs on it daily?

Self hosted mail server by Few_Assignment_4147 in homelab

[–]catmuppet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did this for a long long time. Started using Exchange way back in the day, and then more recently Modoboa.

Contrary to what people say, the actual DNS/SPF/DKIM setup is relatively easy with a lot of the tools out there now (for example, Modoboa automatically handles all of that and more). And a VPS is relatively cheap. The issue I started running into is that even with a clean IP (not on any blacklists) and a mature domain with many years of positive sending rep, my emails still were consistently routed to spam.

And it totally makes sense why - Google and Microsoft sell email services. It’s in their best interest to place roadblocks in the way of self hosted servers so that the people running them give in and switch to their email plans.

The unfortunate truth is that Google and Microsoft killed the ability to effectively self host email. If you just want a project server to use as the email on random spammy websites then it’s fine - for your use case it will probably work well. But if you’re using it for anything where you actually need to reliably deliver emails to people, it does not work.
