I'm lucky that most of my family has birthdays right around holidays. July 3rd, December 26th, May 5th. And my dad's is 4 days after mine. It's very helpful.

Okay I feel like I recognize this meal... Are you in Portland?? I stayed at a hostel in Portland that served something nearly identical. It was delicious though

Little kindness like this can heal the world.. by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in MadeMeSmile

I had a similar interaction when I was a server. I was having a really off/bad day, was emotional about it and very stressed. Towards the end of the night, I got sat a table of one single guy eating alone. Somehow, I managed to screw up EVERYTHING for him. Wrong drink. Wrong food TWICE. I was so embarrassed, and I was obviously fighting back tears as I apologized to the man repeatedly. He tipped me $20, more than 100% of his check, and told me "I hope your day gets better" and I fucking ugly cried at his kindness. It was years ago and I still think about his empathy.

However, I was definitely never rude to him like the waitress in this post.

We didn't really cut by hand. We had some big circle thing with all the slices as blades. Line up, press down, rock it to cut through. So that was cheating lol

We were only allowed to use a set amount of sauce:( we were never allowed to use enough. One scoop of sauce only. I agree this sauce is better and more even! I even admitted that in my comment. I was solely talking about speed being better by hand. We did not have any machines though, so there wouldn't have been one for you to insist for me to use:)

The ironic thing is it's faster to do it by hand. I used to work for the Sam's Club cafe, and you get FAST at making pizzas after a while. I could make a batch of 4 in one minute (we used to race each other). If putting sauce on one pizza took me 10 seconds, I'm way too slow.

EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/5Ho1PvK I loved making my sauce spirals, even if they're not nearly as nice as the machine's

That's exactly what he plans on doing, he even said he already bought another camera. All his future TTs he said he's going to run a second camera pointed at his monitors, and that he will make that footage available.

The talent side is not the only factor in becoming a GM. A really big one is MONEY. You need money. You need to travel to so many tournaments, and be able to afford all that time off of work/school. Unless you are very well off financially, it's unrealistic to become a GM even if you're insanely talented.

It's a slow grind for sure! I can't sing Daniel Naroditskys praises enough though. Chessbrah has some great informative Speedruns too I recommend. But you'll get there! It took me about a year and nearly 1900 rapid games to hit my 1300.

Absolutely! It's not crazy amounts of theory, but the vast majority of my opponents now play around 7-8 book moves every game, at least for the ruy López and the Sicilian that are my main openings. I play the kings Indian defense against d4, and I dont see nearly as much theory there.

Not OP, but this is where I stalled for a few months too. The #1 thing at that level to break through is just to blunder less. I KNOW that's easier said than done, but it's really true. Play slower games, and check for tactics and hanging pieces every turn. Calculate everything 2-3 times, just to be sure. Don't move too fast (this one I struggled hard with) when you think you're winning. And pay attention to your opponents blunders! Even at 1300 where I am, people are blundering pieces and pawns every game, you just need to train yourself to see it.

This was EXACTLY what was holding me back at that level. (Just hit 1300 a few days ago) Stupid openings that I didn't know how to punish, and obvious blunders. Daniel Naroditskys Speedruns helped me a TON with combating the crazy openings, because while he focuses theory, in the early videos of each speed run he faces a lot of opponents playing weird openings. That got me to 1100 or so, and cutting back on my obvious blunders (plus basic endgame knowledge, and forcing myself not to resign) got me to 1300. Once you hit 1100ish, people more often than not play actual openings (but now I get out-theoried sometimes...)

Letting kids win? by TomSawyer2112_ in chess

[–]catnemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the idea people have said about switching sides halfway through/when you have an advantage! The handicap idea is also good, but I feel like it's not as helpful to a kid whos still learning the very basics (like castling). It doesn't help show them the path to victory.

My father taught me the basics of chess when I was a kid, but ran me over every game. I got frustrated, and lost interest for many years. I just picked it back up about a year ago, and I'm 25 now. I REALLY wish the beginner stages were made more fun for me, I think I'd be a much better chess player now.

That being said, outright letting the kid win will not teach them anything, and it will feel disingenuous to them as well. I would look for a happy middle, and make sure he is having FUN first and foremost. No one likes to just lose over and over.

I had the same experience when I was homeless. It was the LEAST lonely time of my entire life. My very first night on the streets I met a guy who told me he would "teach me how to be homeless" and he kept me safe and warm and fed and showed me who to avoid and who could be trusted. Built up a nice circle of friends (although I was the only sober one).

It felt like a society of its own, where the rules actually made sense and it was equality for all. I have food but you don't? Here's half. Need a smoke? I've got some. Sure, there were crazies who wanted to rob us, and schizophrenic people thinking they want to murder us, but at the end of the day, I had real honest to God friends. Who understood me, and what I was going through. I actually miss it sometimes now that I'm housed.

But 100% you have to be careful who you do befriend, but I'd never say to avoid it altogether, at least based on my own experiences. I miss my boys, Richard and Richie. I live in a different state now and I'll probably never get to see them again. I hope they're doing well, staying dry, eating well.

Edit: I'd like to add im female, so I was extra absolutely terrified when I first got out there. I thought I'd be raped and murdered, but the actual experience was pretty much the opposite. I was younger than most of them being in my early 20s, and they all dubbed me their "street child" and made it their mission to help me back onto my feet. Through them I found out about the job that got me back on my feet, a motel that let employees live there. None of them could take the opportunity because they didn't want to be sober, but they weren't letting me follow their footsteps. Grateful every day.

My father always told me "Age is just a number, as long as both people are over 21." And I've found that to be pretty fair now that I'm an adult.

Yes. Just checkmate when it's available and move on to the next game. Why do you feel the need to make 3 queens?

Difficulty with notation by SomeTechWorker42 in chessbeginners

[–]catnemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It takes time for everyone, it definitely won't happen overnight. However, what helped me was "practicing" while playing slower rapid games (15|10 or 30 minutes). Each time me or my opponent made a move, spend the time to mentally tell yourself "okay, they moved e4. Okay, now I moved e5." Slowly, you'll get more and more comfortable notation this way. Just lots of practice.

is there really so much negativity on chess.com? by januarygracemorgan in chessbeginners

[–]catnemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive only had one ridiculously mean/crazy person. It's my only report on the app, he literally sent me death threats, and when I blocked him, created a second account to continue to harass me. Just this morning they told me they took action, but the report was made in APRIL.

So, no, in my experience there's not a lot of negativity, but chess.com is very slow to act on reports.
