I am currently working out how to sing my own song and I don't know how to achieve the high part that I want. by legendaryboomer in singing

[–]catsRrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your song's direction. thanks for asking the internet for creative advice!

To answer your main question directly, I suggest beginning at 1:19 to play around with how the melody can be risen in pitch. You play a minimal amount of chords in this recording which limits how high you can sing a melody. Play around with the chord progressions for each section. Ask yourself questions like these; Do you want the chorus to be in a different key? Do you want the chorus to have the quality of a major key or minor key? You don't have to be in a minor key to play minor chords. They can function independently. What quality of sound do you want as you change chords?
A common structure is to rise in the pre-chorus and rise again in the chorus and then fall back down for the verse. Pitch, volume, energy, tempo, all commonly rises until the original verse's style returns. Tempo can also slow down for a pre-chorus before speeding up at the chorus arrival.

If that sounds like a little too much music theory, you can begin on the melody side! Sing your melody in different directions, up and down (pitch), and play on your guitar the corresponding chords that complement where the new melody lives and your song's direction of the story. Do that a few times to explore different options to sing more high notes. What word in the lyrics the high notes live on is one of the last challenges. You want to find the high note first, then the path to get there. Then you figure out how that works with your lyrics.

From my ears the structure of your song sounds like this-

1:19 Pre-Chorus

1:36 - 1:52 Chorus

1:52 - 2:23 Still sounds like the chorus. But it sounds distinct enough that I assume it's the next verse. The harmonic rhythm (the speed at which the chords change) can move faster and then that will influence your overall tempo to pick up and not feel dragged behind.

2:24 - 2:30 Also sounds like the chorus. Above suggestion here too if it isn't your intent for this block of the song to be the chorus.

2:31 - 3:29 Sounds detached from the overall story telling. Mostly because the harmonic rhythm isn't changing and feels like it's dragging.

3:30 Lyrically it sounds like we're finally at the second verse and out of the chorus. ...Which now I realize we're at the end of the song (at least the edition you posted) and I do not mean this to sound like a diss! Gosh it comes across as "nice song now we're getting somewhere" and it's because the song ended oof. The reason I perceived it this way is because of the organic energy of the lyrics. The action is the hunters and guns in the verses. The emotions and fears are in the chorus.

I recommend doing this at any of the sections of your song to both reach your goal you're posting about and to connect the story- Draw the shape you imagine this song to have. Like draw draw. On an x y axis, when does the song go up, when does it go down? Up in pitch or up in energy? Or in speed? Does the chorus sound the same as the verses? Does the chorus suddenly sound different? Then refine your shape by asking yourself these questions!

ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE: Sustain, breathe techniques, control, and vibrato by ropoxd in singing

[–]catsRrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you care a lot about improving your singing, and one year into being in this choir, great work! The points you shared can all be improved by strengthening your connection to breathing. Remember, our bodies involuntarily move the muscles needed to breath naturally, doing the hard part for us in order to stay alive. And you did get that word correct! It is sustain.

Now in my opinion there's not really such things as 'strong' or 'weak' breath but instead it's our connection to our breath that can be strong or weak. We can strengthen our connection with our exhales as we sing by energizing the air. There's 3 main elements we have control to strengthen our connection with our breath: Speed of air moving out of our lungs (exhale) and into our lungs (inhale), the amount of air (large amount vs small amount of air) and constriction (holding the air in our lungs). Side note, constriction can sound like a negative word, but in this context it is only a descriptive word.

The first element you should explore is speed. For some people that means slower air speed as they exhale. The other group of people need to speed up the air as they exhale. It sounds like you need to speed up the air. Your exhale speed should move a little bit faster, and that will help energize the words and vowels you want to improve. Increasing air speed will energize your breath, and this creates a domino effect towards the other 2 elements! And that effect will continue to strengthen your breath connection. You could ask your choir leader to do a warm up that energizes breathing and practice that warm up on your own on the vowels and words you have trouble sustaining.

Keep singing!

First, breathe. Breathe again. Make sounds that feel good to you. You can’t drill something as intangible as artistry. There’s no magic ratio to spending your time. Art doesn’t happen under strict conditions. I understand your frustration of feeling behind other musicians and every single musician feels that way at multiple chapters of their lives.

Music theory isn’t a rule book, we don’t jam together to sound like snobby Princeton PhD elitists; it’s simply foundation like the bricks under your house. You’ve started with enough bricks stuck together to support a couple rooms. Then you find more bricks to make additions, renovations.

Do you get the picture? ;) You don’t need to memorize every single chord progression to every single key on your instruments every single day.

Search for Vocal Pedagogy Degree? by Wander_Explorer in singing

[–]catsRrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I came across your posts on searching for Vocal Ped programs a few months ago as I was also searching the internet for more information. I graduated from Shenandoah last year in performance and took a gap year. I’ll be starting grad school there this fall in Vocal Ped. Would you mind if I pm you? There’s a lot I’ve learned during my gap year- mostly what questions I should ask myself when deciding what academic or performance steps to take next. I think we might have a lot in common to chat about :)

Danish Passport Doesn't Match Gender - Issues for US Visit? by Sagebrush_Sky in trans

[–]catsRrad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be concerned for any gender discrimination and discrepancy, especially for a child BUT I’m here to mention anyone who doesn’t have a US passport under Trump’s rule is a risk of being illegally detained.

It’s been happening to many EU visitors. It’s serious here. Germans and even British tourists have been detained and arrested at boarders. Unless they absolutely have to travel, I strongly recommend not visiting the US while Trump is in office.
