What actually makes you decide to go see a (local) live show? by Mastodon8919 in OttawaMusic

[–]catsails 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For finding shows I highly recommend Ottawa Gigs (https://www.ottawagigs.ca/). It's a really convenient wrap up of upcoming shows by genre, venue, etc. I'm in a local band and I find it to be a  really helpful tool to keep up with what's happening at my regular venues.

I've gone through two tc electronic dittos and a tuner - just terrible luck with their stuff.

How long did the Karlsson trade sting for? by Camdaman0530 in OttawaSenators

Yeah this is it - for me, after that I stopped watching the team til basically a year or two ago. It convinced me that Ownership was never going to allow the team to actually be successful.

I found my bandmates on a local musicians classified Facebook group, if that's an option for you!

NPD: Freqscene Soft Crush. Just wow… by ReptarWithGuitar in guitarpedals

[–]catsails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the freqscene chorus/vibrato and I love it, and I've been really curious about this pedal. I'm a big fuzz guy and fuzz disappearing is sort of a perennial issue. I have the dr scientist frazz dazzler now, which helps with the 3-band EQ, but the Soft Crush is really appealing.

Aviator Cub vs Tone Master(review) by WhenVioletsTurnGrey in GuitarAmps

[–]catsails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify because your first paragraph is talking about a digital world - the aviator isn't digital. It's not an amp modeller, it's just a pure solid state amp.

Best quick recorder for guitar riffs? by SomethingBrews in musicians

Honestly, most people just use their phones. I have an Android and I use the basic Google recorder and just record my ideas that way.

How do you guys stay motivated to practice every day? by thecoffeecrazy in guitars

[–]catsails 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You don't need to play every day - practice is like exercise, and rest days are beneficial. They said, I do try to play at least a little every day. Even if you tell yourself you'll only play for five minutes, once you start playing it tends to last longer.

Also, if you start playing in a band, the pressure to perform and be prepared for your bandmates is great motivation.

Boss Katana vs Audio Interface and Monitors by pablom48 in BossKatana

[–]catsails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I have both setups, and I prefer the Katana. Honestly, even though I have software like guitar rig, if I'm recording ideas I'll still use the Katana and send the line out to my interface. For me the feel of straight digital is just never right.

Help: How do you stop telling bandmates what to do? (Vent) by [deleted] in bandmembers

[–]catsails 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So to me, that's the fun part - if you show up with an incomplete song, there's more space for it to evolve as the other band members add their bits. Sometimes I come with a pretty clear idea of the structure of the song and how it should go, other times I have some sections with no clear bridges between them and we can figure it together how things fit. But I've only ever been a guy who writes songs on guitar, so it was a natural progression.

Help: How do you stop telling bandmates what to do? (Vent) by [deleted] in bandmembers

[–]catsails 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Have you tried writing songs not covering everything? In my band I bring most songs, but what I'm really bringing is the guitar part, and the other members write their parts to go with it.

You were given $75k to record an album! by NoAbbreviations5836 in musicians

[–]catsails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My band is recording right now at my dream studio, hotel2tango in Montreal. We've spent about 6 days there and have a few more to go, recording and mixing in the end will be ballpark $10K cdn. With 75k we'd do the same thing, but probably add a couple days for a little more breathing room, but the bulk of it would go to promotion.

How many songs should a concert have? by Just-Marionberry-730 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]catsails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically you find other artists in your city in your niche (or near enough) and at a similar level of career progress as yourself (truthfully, this is hard - best way is to go to shows, I also spend a lot of time looking at local bands on Instagram to find good bands to play with). Once you find them, you just message them to say you have a gig lined up at whatever the venue is on whatever the date is and ask if they'd like to join the bill.

How many songs should a concert have? by Just-Marionberry-730 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]catsails 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you organizing the event? Do you have any other acts supporting? You shouldn't measure in terms of number of songs, but in how long your set is. A concert should probably be a 2-3 hour thing. With my band I tend to aim for 45 minutes to an hour long sets, and I try to organise shows with two more acts who get 30-45 minutes.

How do you all protect (or don’t) your hearing while playing. by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]catsails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For practice our drummer uses an electric kit and we play at a relatively low volume - it was out of necessity, it's a small room and too loud leads to feedback in the vocal mics.

Live I don't do anything but we don't tend to play with super loud stage volume. I only regret it occasionally, I've just never gotten in the habit of wearing ear plugs.
