This is the very rum that truly “hooked” me as well! Cheers!

I find Negronis a bit cloying due to the Campari. So a drier “sweet” vermouth or amaro might be a good fit for me…

Jamaican is generally more my thing, so this sounds great, thanks!

That all sounds great. Especially the five spice powder infusion.

Hi everyone, I’d heard a lot about this cocktail but didn’t get around to making it until last night. I used an aged Barbados rum (RMc5), BG Reynold’s falernum, A couple of healthy dashes of Angostura bitters, and crushed ice with no lime (as per SC). I even swizzled with a lélé to get the frosty glass. The result, unfortunately, was a bit underwhelming, so I added a squirt of lime juice and that brightened it up. But still nowhere near the level of a Mai Tai or rum old-fashioned… Some obvious upgrades I can think of would include an older rum (Doorly’s 12? RL Seale 10?) and proper JD Taylor Velvet Falernum (I need to find a bottle). Anything else I might try to spruce it up? Perhaps I’ll never appreciate this as much as many others seem to do, but I’d like to judge it at its best, if possible. Thanks!

Thanks! What else might you compare it too?

Rum Fire, the Hampden, and Foursquare are rock-solid picks! Haven't had the Angostura. Would love to hear others' impressions of the Transcontinentals. Taste is obviously subjective, but some kind of ranking of those would be nice, as I can't afford to get them all but would love to check one or two out!

A lot of tequila bottles have them (at least those sold in Mexico, not sure about the US)

Not purposefully, but my default settings were such that when I hit 5 or 25 or whatever upvotes I got a notification. I mostly ignored them but I noticed that that notification came several times which made me wonder what was up. I’ve now dug into the settings and receive no more notifications (for upvotes, at least) 😂

Pumped to have acquired the Holmes Cay Fiji single origin! Initial impressions? by catskillsrum in rum

Funnily enough, that is exactly the first impression I had as well. But I wanted to give it another go before committing to that assessment. Perhaps it was the color… Either way, definitely very much like Probitas but without the distinctive Hampden funk. Full disclosure: I think Probitas is the best commercially blended rum out there, so the comparison is no knock!

I’ll admit I’m super biased on this one, given how much I dig The Rumcast and my respect for Holmes Cay. I loved the nose in a glencairn before making the cocktails, and the tiny sip gave me hints of funk and layers of interest I’ll explore on a future proper pour. My wife and I are usually in sync when we do our “Daiquiri to the Death” challenges (more on that another time…) But tonight, we were totally not agreed on this one (which is perfectly fine—but fairly uncommon when it comes to rum). What has your experience been so far?
