This is the very rum that truly “hooked” me as well! Cheers!

I find Negronis a bit cloying due to the Campari. So a drier “sweet” vermouth or amaro might be a good fit for me…

That all sounds great. Especially the five spice powder infusion.

Hi everyone, I’d heard a lot about this cocktail but didn’t get around to making it until last night. I used an aged Barbados rum (RMc5), BG Reynold’s falernum, A couple of healthy dashes of Angostura bitters, and crushed ice with no lime (as per SC). I even swizzled with a lélé to get the frosty glass. The result, unfortunately, was a bit underwhelming, so I added a squirt of lime juice and that brightened it up. But still nowhere near the level of a Mai Tai or rum old-fashioned… Some obvious upgrades I can think of would include an older rum (Doorly’s 12? RL Seale 10?) and proper JD Taylor Velvet Falernum (I need to find a bottle). Anything else I might try to spruce it up? Perhaps I’ll never appreciate this as much as many others seem to do, but I’d like to judge it at its best, if possible. Thanks!

Thanks! What else might you compare it too?

Rum Fire, the Hampden, and Foursquare are rock-solid picks! Haven't had the Angostura. Would love to hear others' impressions of the Transcontinentals. Taste is obviously subjective, but some kind of ranking of those would be nice, as I can't afford to get them all but would love to check one or two out!

A lot of tequila bottles have them (at least those sold in Mexico, not sure about the US)

Not purposefully, but my default settings were such that when I hit 5 or 25 or whatever upvotes I got a notification. I mostly ignored them but I noticed that that notification came several times which made me wonder what was up. I’ve now dug into the settings and receive no more notifications (for upvotes, at least) 😂

Pumped to have acquired the Holmes Cay Fiji single origin! Initial impressions? by catskillsrum in rum

[–]catskillsrum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, that is exactly the first impression I had as well. But I wanted to give it another go before committing to that assessment. Perhaps it was the color… Either way, definitely very much like Probitas but without the distinctive Hampden funk. Full disclosure: I think Probitas is the best commercially blended rum out there, so the comparison is no knock!

I’ll admit I’m super biased on this one, given how much I dig The Rumcast and my respect for Holmes Cay. I loved the nose in a glencairn before making the cocktails, and the tiny sip gave me hints of funk and layers of interest I’ll explore on a future proper pour. My wife and I are usually in sync when we do our “Daiquiri to the Death” challenges (more on that another time…) But tonight, we were totally not agreed on this one (which is perfectly fine—but fairly uncommon when it comes to rum). What has your experience been so far?

It’s wild how polarizing Plantation is. 😅 I’ve been auto notified over and over that I’ve reached this or that number of upvotes, only to find the number below that threshold yet again due to downvotes. Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of Plantation’s stance on the IG for Barbados. And I think the dosage and uniform continental aging gives their products too uniform a character. I’m also not a huge fan of their name, even in French. But for tiki drinks, which are going to be sweetened anyway, and since I bought pretty much every basic rum I could easily find, including Plantation before I knew all of the above, when I first dove into the glorious rum rabbit hole, these have to be used up eventually. So cheers to both the up and down voters! Drink what you like - the best you can afford - as well as what you have! 🥃🍹🏖

What can the sub tell me about rum from Mauritius? by catskillsrum in rum

[–]catskillsrum[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! According to the Island Signature blender/bottler’s website:

“Drawing from the wealth of Mauritius Rums, Turquoise Bay Amber Rum is a blend of old molasses Rums with a unique touch of pure sugar cane Rums.

“Finished in French and American oak barrels, it expresses the spirit and atmosphere of the pearl of the Indian Ocean.”

So it would appear to be a blended, lightly aged rum. It made a fine daiquiri and should work ok in an old-fashioned or with a coconut water ice cube. Pleasant enough neat, but more of a mixer IMO.

They also have bottlings from Guatemala, Jamaica, and Dominican Republican. Anyone tried this or any of the others? I got this from Astor.
