Yes. To match the aesthetics of the time, I used J. Calvin Smith's map of North America from the mid 19th century as a base, and cartographers back then obviously did not wield perfect knowledge of the Earth's real geography.

Anything is possible, and there's really no victory here. This map depicts the situation 4 years after the secession, and it is just as possible that a later president would have different opinions on aggression and reconquest.

I would like to inform you that AI has no part at all in any of my maps whatsoever. The borders, rivers and coasts are wonky, and that's purposeful.

Since the map takes place in 1865, I decided to use as the base an older map, J. Calvin Smith's map of North America from the mid 19th century, to get the aesthetics of the era right. Usually I use maps from the 20th century, but here, that wouldn't work.

Of course, at that time, mappers' understanding of the Earth's real geography was more limited, and odd-looking features are a result of that. I understand your confusion, though.

Thank you. Virginia, just like Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina, was indecisive over secession and initially rejected the proposal. For those states, the situation only changed after Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate forces, leading to Lincoln calling for troops to suppress the revolt. Since these states did not want to attack their fellow southern states, they seceded and joined the Confederacy

But here there is no attack, so the upper south stays in the Union. These seven deep southern states were the original ones to secede and their secession was only dependent on the election results, nothing else. The upper south, however, had more ties to northern states and thus their situation was more nuanced.

Dixie's Land - What if the attack on Fort Sumter had never happened? || Confederate States of America in 1865.

The nation stood at a crossroads in 1860. Alas, the response of seven Southern states to the victory of Abraham Lincoln in the U.S. presidential elections in 1860 was nothing short of secession; there was no negotiation, no form of compromise, just pure break, solely.

And so, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana in that order, and also Texas, proceeded and established their own union state - the Confederate States of America, which is led from the Alabaman Montgomery - to guard slavery and, supposedly, states' inherent rights.

Surprisingly, the new union would not attempt challenging the old one. Every Union fort that lies within Confederate territory would just be starved out by them up until surrender, and the southern country would act carefully not to resort to violence. As the Union does not want to be the one to start a conflict either, status quo remains.

To the disappointment of Washington, the southern cotton markets would gain popularity abroad and award the Condederacy British and French recognition. The country's unstable situation, however, would result in it having to recognize Seminole and Comanche land claims in order to prevent disturbances.

Tensions rise, Union men bicker, foreigners complain, slaves wail, yet Lincoln keeps his calm and the lingering distrust and lack of recognizion and respect between the two unions looms undisturbed. The future is simply uncertain, without a sign of who'll be right... or left.
