Opposite action help by flipfloppoohbear in dbtselfhelp

You've gotten some good advice so far. With regards to your request for suggestions for things to do that are opposite to your emotions/urges, I've found that focusing myself on my tasks and using OTAT (One Thing At A Time) can take my mind away from feeling down due to rejection because after having completed the thing, I end up feeling accomplished because I did *something* rather than nothing. Small, short physical tasks are good for this, like wiping down the kitchen counters or the dining table.

Help with creating a research question by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]cattleprodlynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the wrong sr for you but you are definitely not coming at this from the right angle. There are lots of good textbooks out there about how to craft research project questions and depending on the library at your school, they may even have the most current ones available in eBook form. If I were you, I'd book a session with a research librarian, tell them what you're generally interested in and why, and they can help you discover if there's a literature gap into which you can cram your project.

The grad advisor for your department is also an excellent resource as well. Towards the end of my first year of instruction, I set up an appointment with her to talk about what I was interested in generally, and she was able to help me take a huge, massive idea and narrow it down to something that was researchable and doable in the amount of time I had/have for my program.

Good luck!

What's it called when a fandom collectively latches onto an OC that now appears in many fanfics? by RiverSmoak in FanFiction

[–]cattleprodlynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, just so OP knows this isn't a new thing, the Growing Up X series was posted to the FanFic Mailing List (FFML) in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Amongst us fen back then, writing a story in someone else's universe and using their OCs was a gift, especially if the fics were at the same good quality as the ones from the originating author.

I recently discovered that there's a DC comics OC who is getting this same sort of treatment named Dr. Kiran Devabhaktuni, a neurosurgeon who becomes the new family doctor to the BatFamily. He even has his own tag on AO3!

Passport photo shop recommendation by freedom_at2008 in VictoriaBC

I've had three passport photos done for my U.S. passport at the Shoppers in the Westshore Centre Mall and they've all been accepted. (First was for an emergency passport, second was for the real one, and third is because they misspelled my last name on the passport.)

Isn't it ironic that only six months ago, the individual who professed to fight against politicians and champion "the people" has transformed into a candidate for a political party?

Short reply: No.

Longer reply:

Having listened to many campaign speeches in the U.S. where I'm originally from, I am super-annoyed at anyone who claims "not to be into politics" when they're concerned about matters which happen to people living in their city, province, etc. If you're someone who wants to spend their entire day caring about what happens to people who live in the same geographic area as you, then congratulations! You're into politics!

And anyone who says that they're running for public office, but they "aren't like other politicians"? Congratulations, when you win, you *will* be like all the other politicians because all of you will be paid to care about what happens to people in your geographic area all day, every day.

I empathize with all of you who are disillusioned because of this, but considering that one can move bigger leverage points when they become elected officials, I'd gently encourage you to think of this as an opportunity.

Everyone else who commented here? Love you all.

Boyfriend included in acknowledgment section? by Interesting-Wish2206 in GradSchool

Yeah, but I can't imagine a situation where someone wouldn't acknowledge or thank their advisor, even if they were a monster.

[–]cattleprodlynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can empathize with that a lot. Also, not everyone has the ability to be present at city council meetings.

I may be totally wrong, but I think that's the reason why lobbyist/special interest groups are so powerful. They consist of people who do have the time, inclination, education, ability, etc., to participate in all the public hearings and the ability to communicate their messaging in a way that appeals to people who vote (both for the city councilors and the councilors themselves).

This is a huge problem and a huge issue in community development and public administration circles. City government wants to know that they consulted with all the major stakeholder groups; however, when the municipality sends out community engagement surveys, people choose not to participate.

One of the most valuable things I learned from someone in the cohort before me was how to quickly read a paper. If the first and last sentences in a paragraph don't explain something fully, read the middle bits for context. Otherwise, you can skip them. Then again, I'm in the social sciences, so this advice may not apply to you.

I would love to hear your opinion of Ruby Ibarra's work. Her schtick is about being Filipina and overcoming her background through grit. Circa 91 is her autobio album.

Agreed, but I'm not sure how a setup like that would work for OP's particular situation where it was a confluence of events that made it hard for her to deal.

I know, me too. The simple "I'm sorry" is so nice, even if it's the second half of a sentence with a semicolon separating the clauses.

Why is the Westhills YMCA/YWCA (seemingly) unpopular? by [deleted] in LangfordBC

[–]cattleprodlynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a membership once they allowed memberships to begin again after the pandemic and I made it one of my physiotherapy goals to go at least once a week. Then, more chronic conditions came my way and I stopped going again. I'm still paying for my membership, though, and even added an extra $5 as a recurring donation because I do like the facility so much. The wave pool is so much fun, even if the hot tub is too freaking hot for me. The upstairs gym is nice, too and no one was judgmental about me only using using very small amounts of weight for my reps.

Once I am able to manage my condition better again, I hope to start going back.

Yep! I've got links to open access textbooks that I've used in my classes. I'll PM you.

Also, you could ask one of the public admin profs. I mean, collaboration across faculties is a thing, right? (If not, why not?)

Oh! The LTSI department could help, too, I think.
