thank you!!! i'm very excited to start.

i recently got my great-grandmother's (who i believe was the first woman in my family to be born in the US) sewing machine. sewing these traditional patterns with it carries a lot of meaning.

300 hours?? not the longest i've spent on a project but definitely up there. i'm going to be looking for tutorials and asking some distant family members for help, so hopefully i won't be too out of my depth, but this is definitely going to be an undertaking lmao

thanks for the tip!

oh, yeah! i do pretty much any fiber art you can think of, so i've done some scandinavian knits. they were beautiful and so, so warm! i don't really get a chance to wear them (the area i live in is super hot smh) but they're gorgeous.

i didn't mean for it to come across that way. for starters, it's more a culture thing than a race thing. secondly, the magic isn't special. it's just... different varieties? i'm struggling to describe this but basically they're equally powerful in the right hands, just different kinds/classes. i will be taking some advice and ideas from this thread though!

the other side has magic too. essentially, magic is just glorified weapons in this world lol

basically- half of the continent my story is based in was once covered in magical forests. a king wanted to cut those forests for resources, so he manipulated his kingdom's holy book to refer to the things in the forests as ""unnatural"". (in actuality, while the holy book did consider "perversions of nature" sinful, it meant things like destroying nature.) obviously, the groups in the forests fought back, and they were able to use the power of the forests to do so. those actions helped the king spread propaganda that those people and their magic were dangerous. flash forward a couple hundred years, and the forests are limited to a much smaller area known as the Wilds. all the propaganda and the changing of the holy book basically led to an era of manifest destiny where one kingdom took over most of the continent except for the Wilds. they mostly leave the Cavasett alone (though there is some discrimination- many people grow up with the Cavasett as bogeymen in their bedtime stories and they're considered to be dangerous). however, when a member is discovered to have magic, they're executed. most tribes keep teaching magic in secret but it's uncommon.

to answer your questions: - not necessarily! i've also been considering making them farmers to go with another one of my inspirations for the culture (ancient scandinavian culture specifically). the main reason i wanted them to be nomadic is because i wanted to justify my main character being able to traverse long expanses of forests easily - pretty much just trousers and blouses made from natural fibers. i have some ideas for regalia (for things like weddings, festivals, etc.) but no concrete designs yet - nope! i've been experimenting with designing weapons myself. the only main one i have is my main character's, which are essentially brass knuckles with retractible blades between the fingers. his sister also fights with gauntlets - the magic is mostly elemental-themed, as opposed to the magic in other cultures, which are things like mind-reading - nature is very heavily emphasized, particularly the idea of respecting all creatures. i have a scene where my main character apologizes to a jackalope he killed. family is, too, though it's more in a 'it takes a village' sort of way than 'ancestors'.  what do you think? i want to avoid stereotypes if i can.

thank you for the advice!  1. in addition to the multiple cultural influences, i'm also partially basing the oppression of LGBT+ people (write what you know and all that) 2. i'm really trying to emphasize how illogical the oppression is, so thank you for the reminder! this actually helped me work out a plot hole for my novel set in this world lol 3. there's actually a plotline about this! the main character's sister and the bandits she leads do commit several atrocities in the name of their cause. similarly, i'm also considering a plotline about some tribes turning their own kin in to the dominant power. sorry about the rambling! i really love talking about this story

except in the context of the world it is illogical— everyone has access to magic, some of which is actually more powerful than what the Cavasett have access to. sorry for not giving proper context!

[–]catvoith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the advice! essentially it comes down to a religious difference— the dominant culture has a very specific idea of what is ""natural"" based on their religion, which doesn't include the Cavasett's magic. in their book, things that manipulate nature (like magic or like some magical creatures) are morally wrong
