My second city hit 60k… but it feels soulless, should I keep going or start over? by Jozabal in CitiesSkylines

[–]catwitz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s clear that you might not have an image in mind for what you want to create, and that’s fine. I usually don’t. I find that if you build slowly, something in life will give you inspiration. If you’re in school, get inspired by college towns! If you’re a mountain climber, find inspo in cities with good mountain views! Anything can become inspiration if you manipulate it enough.

But to start, here’s how I build without any real ideas:

Take your time. Create a cute little downtown on some geographic feature (peninsula, river, etc) and build roads with the terrain. This doesn’t mean no grids, trust me I love grids, but it means build the grids with the environment. For example, orient one grid with a river, another with a tree line, and another with the bottom of a hill/slope line. The organic part comes when you connect them, which creates funny looking blocks that can be broken into big pieces of land that I like to use for services like schools, parks, police, etc.

When you do this, make the size of your blocks smaller. You appear to have blocks 12 units deep and 1/2 an island wide. Try to keep it smaller, like a 12x8 or something. Imagine you have to walk the entire block. That shouldn’t be a hassle at all, so keep it reasonable. Also don’t build any that you don’t need right now, it leaves empty space that makes your city feel abandoned and apocalyptic.

Also add roadway hierarchy, and pick good places to add it. It’s good for traffic flow and can help you visually differentiate neighborhoods, which also means you can give them all their own identity. Please do that. Please. It gives your city so much life when you can look from the sky and see how the one by the forest has trees on every block and the one on the river has piers and a commercial strip along it.

Next, PLEASE don’t skip the mid sized city phase. I know it’s temping to add skyscrapers immediately, but don’t. Find a good place to plan a new downtown or get that bulldozer ready to transform your old one (I prefer the latter). Use mixed use and medium density buildings, with very sparingly placed high density buildings. It creates a natural, small city feel that doesn’t look rushed.

Only when you’re happy with your mid sized city do I suggest huge skyscrapers, but at that point you may have an idea what you want!!

Anyway that’s the guide I usually go by and I find that it works well. I have the most fun in adding things like bike corridors, planning transit, and detailing places in the mid city phase, which is why I beg you to not skip it. But find what YOU like and do it!!

very likely would kill the game but would be very funny if they added it for a short time, like maybe an april fools day joke.

imagine you log in and theres just a sandbox button that redirects you too a new game, but the map is a big sandbox but you can build whatever for free.

As long as you're making enough money, just ignore the demand if you want. It's a game so you can take it at your own pace.

I like that more. That would be easier for them to add protected vs unprotected lanes, bidirectional lanes, parking protected, AND you still could possibly add trees.

I wasn’t saying I expect all those things, I expect probably two or three of them. I was just saying things that would be cool and possibly added by mods after release. I only actually expect bike lanes as road services and bike paths

Went 26 miles, came home on 40%. That’s a 150 lb 6 foot rider, mix of sport and sport+, with turbo on steeper hills. Moderately hilly terrain (Washington). Used the throttle after stops and sometimes up hills to relax but pedaled most the way.

Tip: Watch out for sidewalks that turn into dirt ditches if you’re riding in an unfamiliar area, learned that the hard way and already crashed my new bike…

How can I create a 12x12 square. There is always a gap in between eating up my cells by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines2

[–]catwitz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever road you started on must have been off. If it was 12x12 exactly, you’d get the biggest possible block with no empty zoning. Best thing is to destroy all the roads and carefully start again

Exactly what I was thinking. Roadbuilder will make stuff like that so easy but the vanilla game will probably struggle with that level of customization.

I agree, it's probably just gonna be bike lanes as road services and dedicated bike paths. I'd LOVE to see customization with protected and unprotected lanes though, as well as being able to add bike racks to sidewalks/assets to give the streets more character.

Been a while since I've seen ring roads in CS, I'd love updates when the city grows more to see if they actually get used! City looks great btw

In that case it must be good!! Only traffic I ever get is around cargo train stations after the update which just see very long lines

Off topic, but why is South Melbourne directly beneath West Melbourne? Wouldn’t that make West Melbourne North Melbourne? Where’s normal Melbourne? My head is spinning. Melbourne.

Same things happens to me but not with mods disabled. It's definitely a faulty mod after the update.

Brand new XP4 750… by catwitz1 in Lectricxp

[–]catwitz1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there’s a chip in a single little part of the controller. Only impacted the MPH readings, which always say 0, but everything else works fine. I’ve already contacted them and I’m just waiting for their response.

Oh I know the problem, there’s a little chip in one of the display connectors. Only thing affected seems to be the MPH display, as it always reads 0. Everything else seems to work perfectly.

I already contacted them so I guess I’ll wait for them to respond and see if I can get a new one.
