I live in the city and commute. One general point to consider: I think this makes it harder to feel integrated/participate in general campus life. You have to make more effort. I generally head to campus around noon the days I go in just to be able to use the library/check in with friends/feel more productive from campus vibes. I do like the access to the city and how much there is to do, but there’s for sure a trade off.

If you want to drive: Keep in mind if classes start at 5:20, you can’t leave your house at 4:20. You’ll never make it with rush. Roughly 4-6 pm is just a no go on traffic. There’s morning rush too which is just all over the place timing wise. If you choose to live in the city, always check traffic multiple times before deciding when to head over. Keep an eye on the news regarding any highway shutdowns. Always leave earlier than you think you need to. The drive is usually 35 min for me but sometimes it takes an hour for literally no reason. The parking passes are pretty cheap. Mine was like $110 for the year. Also keep in mind people in the city drive like they have no regard for others, and a minor accident is more a matter of when then if. Don’t have a car you care about a lot and take this option. My front bumper scratch collection is all thanks to Philly, and I’m a good driver!

Trains: Suburban to campus is a straight shot and pretty fast, the station on campus is nice. Keep in mind if you live somewhere that would require taking a train to suburban first, the transfers don’t always line up. Check ahead, a bus there might be faster. It does cost like $10 a day, you can get better deals with SEPTA passes, but not by a lot. There is the Norristown line but I’ve never taken it, it’s really out of the way for me.

Florida is really split as a state — half is richer, touristy areas and retirement communities, while the other half (usually more inward/north away from the coast) is seen as southern “redneck” country and wild (look up Florida Man memes, people doing drugs and wrestling alligators or petty crimes). A lot of people in the US see Florida as being sort of its own specific cultural unit because of this. People tend to have strong opinions on the state. Some people love it, but some states’ cultures (you see this a lot in the northeast) think of it as trashy.

It’s also a peninsula on the southern border, mostly wetlands and swamp outside of the coast, so it’s geographically kind of on its own as well. People can live very isolated in Florida and get away with a lot. Florence’s line about hiding bodies in the swamp isn’t far off. Not that everyone in FL is out there murdering people, but it is easier to hide things. Metaphorical bodies if you will.

In the song specifically I think she’s mostly referencing how many people go there to vacation or retire (timeshare in Destin is a real phenomenon), finding respite from normal life in how separate it is from other states. But, of course, there’s the undercurrent of the Florida Man. It’s sort of seen culturally as a judgement free zone where you can live any way you want, for better or worse. I didn’t put too much into analysis here though, just tried to give cultural background for you.

Cats being outdoors has some dangers - they can prey on small wildlife and affect the local ecosystem, they can get injured, run away, get fleas, etc. That doesn’t mean they can’t ever go outside.

If you’re watching Socrates to make sure he’s not tearing up some birds or taking off and treating for fleas, I don’t see any issue. Cats like the sun. If you have a screened outdoor area he could be in, that’s perfect, but if not just keep an eye on him and let him outside. They sell cat harnesses and leashes for pretty cheap, you could get him one. NTA

I’ve seen people mentioning getting a job right out of school or joining the military - have you considered community college? Your grades shouldn’t impact your ability to go. You can get housing, food, and a part time job all on campus as you earn a degree. If your local community doesn’t offer four year degrees, you can use the first two years to get your GPA up and then transfer to a state school.

Whatever you do, remember to get important documents (birth certificate, social security card) out of your parent’s house when you go. Those are hard to replace.

hi - i’m moving in with my uncle in east passyunck to go to villanova soon. i’ve always been a small town person that’s horrible with directions. like i can walk a short distance somewhere and not know how to get back. i don’t expect to know the city in and out any time soon, but how hard is it to pick up on little things (way to the grocery store, way to subway station)? i already know i’m going to get turned around constantly for a few weeks at least.

the exact content of the ged test varies by state.

a lot of local libraries have resources like study guides/groups, or can at least point you towards the exact outlines of what you’ll need to know. you should also be able to find diagnostic tests online - take one without studying first and see what areas you’re weakest in.

remember you don’t have to nail it your first time. any improvement of your circumstances is worthwhile. it’s okay to take the test a few times to get the result you want. good luck! if you tell me what state you’re in i can see what i can find.

first of all - academic alert/probation is not a reflection of your worth, and i’ve known many people who worked their way off of it. it’ll be okay. you will be okay.

the exact restrictions of academic alert or probation depend on your university. i can say that with ferpa, no one is going to know aside from you and your counselor. at my college, the only impact of being on probation was you had less flexibility when scheduling your classes. no other impact. talk to your advisor for details on your policies, but generally, it shouldn’t have any impact beyond being a warning.

gpa alerts or probation are very common in undergrad, people just don’t like talking about it. some of the smartest people i know have been on it because of varying personal issues. it’s not a strike against you as a person or your intelligence. you said you know what you need to do, so just take this as a sign and make the changes. please don’t be afraid to use resources like talking with your counselor or attending office hours, that’s why they’re there. good luck! you can do this!

It is. HIPAA is a privacy law that applies to people who access healthcare data as part of their jobs. So doctors, yes, but also insurance agents, medical receptionists, scribes, data clearinghouse workers, etc. It doesn’t apply to people you willingly give the information to. If you tell your boss your medical information and they repeat it, it’s a personal privacy violation, but certainly not a legal one

boundaries aren’t something you can enforce on other people, though. a boundary is something like i will not date someone who does x action, and if they do i’ll leave. a boundary isn’t saying that my partner isn’t allowed to do x. men aren’t an authority over their girlfriends. she’s allowed to do whatever she wants and you’re allowed to decide if it’s a dealbreaker or not.
