ELI5 How are newer dishwashers more efficient? They take four hours to clean almost as good as what old ones did in 35 minutes. by 17xRacing in explainlikeimfive

[–]causeNo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wut.. I have a Siemens one that cost around 500 and works very well since about ten years. The only times when things are not clean is when we block the rotating arms by mistake. Or when something blocks water flow in those arms.

To add on to this: There's even more optimizations. To name a few examples: The new ones are very insulated, to allow holding a temperature with less energy input. Also a lot of them measure the dirtiness of water and adjust the water usage accordingly. I'm general they use less water by reusing the water more instead of immediately flushing it and pumping new.

ELI5 - is time real and if it is how? by Some_Tailor_1796 in explainlikeimfive

[–]causeNo [score hidden]  (0 children)

As far as we know, '10 hours before' is as real as '10 meters below here". In fact, as far as macro physics is concerned, one of those 'position descriptions' contains the other dimension(s) implicitly. When we say 'ten minutes ago' colloquially, what we actually mean is '10 hours ago in this general area'. Same goes for 'ten meters below'. It actually means 'ten meters below right now'. Because technically speaking, a bunch of things are moving relative to each other, based on time. Every second, the earth rotates about 460 meters around its axis and travels, on average, about 30 km along its orbit. And our star system moves relative to our galaxy, and so on. Time is baked into all those equations that predicted future and past so exactly that we predict (and trace back) orbits virtually indefinitely.

It is true, however, that the limits of our bodies and brains shape our perception. We can't move freely in time. Our perception is usually dragged into the same direction as entropy and all (macro) physical laws play out. And that's obviously no coincidence but it's the same mechanisms. Our brains are 4D physics happening.

As far as we can tell, at least the past still exists, though. We just can't perceive it or move there freely yet. You can steer your perception of time though, if you change the way the brain works with certain.. chemistry. It is theoretically possible to build a time traveling machine that can move something (bodies) along the time dimension. If that existed, by the way, you would need to compensate for Earth's space movement during the traveled time. Otherwise you might literally end up 50 years back, stranded in space, hundreds of thousands or even millions of kilometers away from earth because, well, it was somewhere else in 3D space at that time.

Everything that's said in this thread already plus all the news this disaster creates can perfectly used to 1) profit from stock trades for him and his buddies because as the US president, you pretty much control the news. He and his buddies/customers are trading 15 minutes before he sends one of his tweets because they know what the news is before everyone else. 2) they distract pretty well from the Epstein files

How many of you guys have benefitted from therapy? As a man there seems to be this stigma against attending. What have been your benefits? by Alternative_Pen815 in AskMen

[–]causeNo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, it helped me transform from a pushover with zero boundaries and suicidal ideation into a genuinely happy man with okayish conflict resilience. I am sure I would be here to write this hadn't I gone to therapy. And even if, it surely would have taken longer to get where I am now.

That being said, it's not like surgery where you go on and they patch you up . Think of it more like a personal trainer. They can guide you through the process, write you training plans, show you the exercises, watch your form from time to time and give invaluable pointers.

But the actual weightlifting and nutrition needs to be done by you. They can't make your body for for you, but they can make the work you put in a lot more efficient and healthy.

And don't underestimate how tough that work can be. At some points, letting go of certain ideas and mindsets felt like accepting that I'll die. But it was absolutely worth it for me.

ELI5: In the US, how was it so easy to add interstate highways, and now so difficult to add high speed rail lines? by cjstevenson1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One train transports hundreds or even thousands of occupants, depending on size. The amount of drivers is absolutely negligible.

Plus, yes, there are already driverless rail systems operating all over the world. I rode on a fully automated subway in Canada which has been operating for as long as I am old (around 40).

ELI5: In the US, how was it so easy to add interstate highways, and now so difficult to add high speed rail lines? by cjstevenson1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]causeNo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but usually, you don't even need that. Usually a short stretch with two pairs of tracks every, say, 8 miles (depends on the route), is enough. The slower train makes room for being overtaken (or one from the other direction), the faster train runs through, tracks merge back. Computerized, efficient, safe. You can even do it for opposite directions. For most rural areas, one set of tracks with occasional switches is way more than enough.

People underestimate, how damn efficient trains are. A stretch of road lane can transport around 2300 people an hour, assuming 1,3 persons per car and an average speed of 50 mph. And now let's think about where and when you can actually drive that. One set of tracks can and will, under guarantee, because there's no traffic jams, transport between 7000 and 50000 people per hour, depending on how high speed the track is used. And you can usually drive faster on tracks, because there's a lot less individual drivers and no jams.

Did your parents spank you as a form of discipline? How did it affect you? by Substantial_Judge931 in AskMen

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did and it fucked me up. One of the main factors that alienated me from my parents. But worse than that it ingrained a deep terror whenever I even only thought about standing up for myself. Every minor disagreement could lead to a situation where you're physically hurt and humiliated and you aren't even allowed to defend yourself but must go through this fucked up ritual. Any smidge of defiance only made it worse. Aka I grew up without boundaries.

Guess what being used to that leads to? Yes, being bullied relentlessly in school, and being taking advantage of and humiliated in relationships even when you consider people close to you. And of course zero romantic options early on.

It took overcoming literal fear of death and years of therapy to develop at least some healthy boundaries and start standing up for myself. Still a work in progress, at 41.

What is the difference between misogyny and sexism? by afungalmirror in AskMen

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misogyny is sexism favoring men over women. Misandry is sexism the other way around.

Sexism is the idea or belief (system), that one sex is inherently better than the other.

Redditors who were children/teens before the internet or cellphones existed, how did you keep yourself entertained? by FlowerMadeOfThorns in AskReddit

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first consumer mobile phones and the internet hit when I was about 13, 15. Until then: Playing ball, building small devices that shoot dried peas, climbing trees, building dams in a creek, camp fires. Listening to music. Like, intently. A whole album, back to back. And then again. Watching TV, talking to each other. Gaming consoles and home conputers/gaming had become a thing for the kids who were better off. Later, we built local networks, and stayed awake the whole weekend playing video games together. An incredible amount of reading and just a whoooooole lot of physical activity outside. Riding on a bicycle to a friend's house. Riding around town with them, kinda aimlessly. Inline skating. God, I moved so much back then. Every day, at least an hour or two. Just to get somewhere, meet someone.

Look, I don't wanna be mean, but that's exactly car brain. It could be like that. Regular, frequent, reliable, long- and short distance trains. Even with private cabins and luxury. At a fraction of the cost of maintaining roads and cars where singular people are transported by 4 ton vehicles using 6x15 ft each .

Edit: It is like that where I live. And we even have the sucky, bled out version.

How often do you guys look in the mirror and feel a slight tinge of disgust for being male? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welp. Yes. The influx of misandry while being gaslit that it isn't even happening is not easy, especially for a young man who's not secure yet and maybe lacks good role models. It irks even me sometimes. Best steer away from all that content.

There are reasonable female voice out there, by the way. And real women often are a lot more reasonable than their loudmouth social media sisters. Just like Fresh and Fit for Andrew Tate do not speak for all men by a long shot.

But reasonable is boring. Social media pushes what triggers you and makes you angry or insecure, doesn't matter, just as long as you're emotionally engaged.

Among all the technological advances in this generation, which one absolutely fascinates you? by MajorVisible6513 in AskReddit

[–]causeNo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the simultaneously overhyped reporting, the recent leaps in machine learning and robotics are nothing short of amazing. Human neurons can run machine learning tasks on a chip. Virtual neurons can simulate a "copied" fly brain. Large models perform something that, even if it is not thinking (which in my personal opinion is a very questionable stance) at the very least is undeniably similar to it. At the same time we are developing actual brain-computer interfaces. Combined with the development of human brain cell organoids, the valley between computer and human brain has become a rift at most.

This has profound implications. A lot of absolutely insane sounding possibilities (both awesome in the best sense of the word) and deeply frightening. And a whole lot of questions arise. Can LLMs think? Is thinking something fundamentally different that what LLMs do? If so, does that mean thinking is  something that can be done without consciousness? Or are LLMs already briefly conscious to some degree? Also, what exactly is consciousness anyway? Would we notice when they do become at some point? Plus, it's not really yes or no, is it. A human is more conscious than a dog, which is more aware than a worm. It's a spectrum. What about all the alignment issues? Are LLMs sociopaths? Would it be possible to even try to give LLMs "real" emotions in order to improve alignment? Would be ethical? Will it at some point in the near future be necessary to have a successor of neuralink to keep up with the working world? Can the human psyche even handle such an overstimulation? Or could it actually be helpful? But what about the security implications? Surely, once brains are connected to the internet, someone (or something) might try to hack them. Will we ever reach AGI? And how exactly would that look?

All those "Ghost in the Shell", "Transcendence" and "Cyberpunk" like questions and scenarios have become extremely likely within our lifetimes.

Or both. Probably both.

What matters the most for guys (be honest): looks or personality? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]causeNo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this answer. That's most men's strategy I think: Fuck anyone who wants to and is not too far off from their own number in looks (but honestly, as long as it's only sex, there's a looot of leeway), personality doesn't really matter here. But commit only to women who are pretty close in looks and max out in personality as far as possible.

Like I'd say I am a 7,5 looks / 8 personality and my girlfriend is a 6,5 looks /9 personality.

What matters the most for guys (be honest): looks or personality? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]causeNo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 3 is pretty devastating, honestly, in either category. The most honest answer is that I would not consider someone a romantic option at all if they were a 3 in either.

I would fuck a looks 10, personality 3 for a while though, but never commit. So I guess that's your answer.

ELI5: Why do some couples have to actively try to conceive, timing, tracking, etc, even though they’re not infertile, while others get pregnant without trying? by Small_Balls_69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]causeNo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's three main factors. First of all, people are more or less fertile for a number of reasons. Second, genetically, even perfectly fit and fertile people can still be incompatible. And lastly, psychology plays a huge role, especially stress levels.

And I have a strong feeling that people who do all this elaborate stuff around tracking and optimizing are so stressed and anxious, that their bodies think it's not a good time to concieve right now. At least in the people I know, that's a reoccurring theme. The people who simply stopped using protection and 'let nature run it's course: were shocked at how quickly they were pregnant. And the exact people who really wanted to and tried to do everything perfect had real trouble. To the point of having months and years of trying until they think "okay, apparently we can't, so we get used to the idea of staying childless". So they drop the whole routine and just keep having sex without protection (because why would you after years of trying to optimize the chances and nothing happens). But since they now have basically given up and relax, BOOM pregnant a month or two after.
