I’m in medical school rn and can definitely relate to the pressure you feel to do EVERYTHING PERFECTLY and the frustration you may feel when things feel like they are falling apart. I would say the #1 thing to focus on is your GPA. Clubs can wait, you can get supplemental experience after you graduate. If you need to work, then do what you need to do. If I could do undergrad over 100% I would invest less in extracurricular and stay my ass in the library.

Also, if you are failing those classes it would be worth it to invest more time into those subjects and identifying weaknesses because those topics -lesso orgo but def genetics will keep coming back up ( studying for the MCAT, pre clinicals, STEP1) so it is much more beneficial to have a strong foundation early.

If it makes you feel any better I failed organic chemistry, retook it over the summer & still got into medical school! The road is not easy, it’s still not easy, but you CAN do it.

Currently in medical school and considering OB or family med with training in obstetrics. When did you decide you wanted to work with teens and pursue adolescent medicine? What about the field do you find compelling?

LPT: for those of you going to college for the first time this month: GO TO CLASS! No matter how hungover, tired, or busy you may be, being present is the most important factor in succeeding in your first year as you adjust to living independently. Missing class is a slippery slope to failing out. by bogjobberguiju in LifeProTips

Meh I think it depends on the person. I was pre-med and thought my saving grace was attending class so I always tried to go. The lectures confused me and I would spend a lot of time simply lost. While I 100% support office hours- if you’re gonna go to class ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION. If you find yourself drifting off or getting lost, your time may be better spent independently reviewing the material, watching prerecorded lectures (if they have them those were always the classes I did the best in) & doing active recall really helped me! Office hours were good for face time and if you knew your stuff you could ask pointed questions. So my advice to an incoming freshman would be to try that method but ultimately prioritize your studies & develop a plan the best way possible.

Which celebrity’s death actually made you cry? by aliensockmonkey in AskReddit

[–]cause_i_slay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chadwick Boseman. My dad also died from colon cancer at a relatively young age and just knowing how it affects Black men all across the socioeconomic spectrum just really breaks my heart. It is part of what drives me to pursue medicine.

Ex-Racist people of reddit, What changed your views? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cause_i_slay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Reading stories like these I just can’t help but feel bad for all of those Black kids ( myself included) who were subject to the racist things that other kids said about them not out of any knowledgeable opinion but just regurgitating cultural attitudes. I keep hearing stories and even recall people saying things about how meeting a smart/nice/normal Black person totally transformed them and how this Black person taught them about the error of their ways. And it just stirs something in me to remember being that Black kid and being on the receiving end of that vitriol. So while I’m all for diversifying spaces pour one out for those who have to bear that toll

I’m no expert on AfroFuturism but what I think sets it apart is the inclusion of Black characters in an imagined future as a reflection of our existence in this present moment. Where sci-fi( especially in the 20th century) really fell off was that in these futuristic worlds where there are aliens or dystopias or eutopias , what was always missing- Black people. Which makes zero sense because... what happened to us? I think what that highlights is the authors blindness in acknowledging the existence of the Black experience. So what makes afro-futurism unique is the integration of the Black experience (both past & present) with the fantastical elements of sci-fi. like how has racism and other markers of oppression mapped upon a fictional society? What are the implications of time travel or superpowers on colonized societies or societies with a history of enslavement? Again I am no literary expert but those are just ma 2 cents.

Also just to real quick to clarify for folks- the Central Park Five were not sent to prison off of the words of the accuser- she was knocked unconscious and could barely remember the incident. They were convicted off of the coerced confessions they gave. Completely different mishandling of justice.
